The truth hit Ryan like a thunderbolt, freezing his body in an instant.
After regaining his senses, he attempted to bypass Vanessa and head towards the ward. “Gotta go check on her,” he muttered.
But Vanessa stood her ground, her voice laced with desperation. “Ryan, Emily’s been up for two solid days. She just drifted off. Please, don’t rouse her. She’ll be up all night again if you do.”
Those words stopped Ryan in his tracks.
He yearned to see his sister, yet his heart ached for her.
Despite the obvious flaws in Vanessa’s story, Ryan didn’t want to chance it. What if she was telling the truth?

So, she let it go. “I’ll bring her some food tomorrow. Ryan and I are heading home. If Emily wakes up, tell her we’re worried sick about her. We’ll always have her back, no matter what,” she told Vanessa.
Vanessa’s eyes welled up, and she nodded. “Sure thing.”
Once Chloe and Ryan left the obstetrics ward, Vanessa made her way back into the room.
There, Emily was lying on the bed, her eyes fixed on the ceiling, brimming with unshed tears.

“Really not gonna tell them?” Vanessa furrowed her brows.
Emily pressed her lips together firmly. “Ryan’s
hot–headed. If he finds out I’ve been mistreated, he won’t sit back and do nothing.”
Vanessa understood Emily’s fears and sighed, “I’ll do my best tomorrow.”
After that, Vanessa fetched some hot water and a towel to clean Emily up.
Feeling refreshed, Emily found the pain in her body easing a bit.

Half an hour later, she was in a light slumber when the sound of the ward door creaking open jolted her awake.
These past couple of days, Emily had become hypersensitive to the sound of doors opening. Even the slightest noise could make her eyes snap open.

Silently, the figure made its way towards the bedside.

Despite having sworn not to come, once he got home, sleep evaded him. Emily’s face haunted his every thought.
So, he tossed aside his resolve and headed straight to the hospital.
Alexander leaned in a bit, his intense gaze zeroing in on Emily’s shadowy features. “You sure about this?” he
asked in a hushed tone.
Feeling the weight of Alexander’s presence, Vanessa decided to bow out.
“Emily, you two have a chat. I’ll be back in a jiff,” she said, then got up and quietly closed the ward door behind her.
