Darren must have given the driver instructions, because as soon as Aurelia arrived at the airport, the driver took her straight to the special school where Joey was. 

When Aurelia finally saw Joey, she noticed that her gaze was vacant. But Aurelia clearly remembered that the last two times she visited Joey, there was a noticeable spark in her eyes. Her mental state had been getting better and better. 

But after just half a month apart, Joey had reverted to the way she was right after Zofia passed away. The teacher mentioned that Joey hasn’t been doing well since she got here. She hasn’t talked to anyone for days. 

Even when people tried to get her attention, she no longer reacted. She would simply zone out, sometimes for an entire day. On her worst days, she even forgot to go to the bathroom. 

A couple of days ago, Darren had told Aurelia about how Joey was doing over WhatsApp, so she decided to come to Grendel City a day earlier than she’d planned. Aurelia spent the whole day with Joey. 

When school was over, Darren came to pick Joey up. 

Aurelia tried to coax Joey, telling her it was time to head home. But Joey, who’d been calm just seconds before, suddenly flipped. Her grip on Aurelia’s hand tightened, and a flash of panic broke through the usual indifference in her eyes. 

“What’s wrong? Don’t you want to go home?” Aurelia asked softly. 

Joey didn’t say a word, but her hold on Aurélia’s arm just got even tighter. 

“Joey, loosen your grip a little, okay? You might hurt someone,” Darren said softly as he tried to coax her. But Joey only clung tighter, her nails digging painfully into Aurelia’s skin. 

Aurelia felt the sharp sting, but she didn’t flinch. Instead, she held Joey protectively in her arms and whispered comfortingly, “It’s alright, don’t be afraid. If you don’t want to go home, we won’t go.” 

Joey trembled in her embrace, and after a long moment, she finally broke down and burst into tears. In the end, Aurelia took Joey back to her hotel, with Darren driving them himself. 

“Joey can stay with me for the next three days. I’ll make sure she’s alright,” Aurelia said to Darren. 

Darren looked apologetic. “Sorry for the trouble.” 

“It’s really no trouble at all. Joey’s such a good girl,” Aurelia replied. Honestly, Aurelia never saw Joey as a burden. 

Darren’s eyes flicked down to her arm, hidden under her long sleeve. After a moment, he said softly, “Make sure you take care of that scratch, alright?” 

“It’s nothing, just a little scratch,” Aurelia replied. She would have completely forgotten about it if Darren hadn’t said anything. 

“If you need anything at all, just give me a call, okay?” Darren said as he headed out. 

“Okay,” Aurelia replied. 

After Darren left, Aurelia had dinner with Joey and then spent some time watching cartoons together. Eventually, Joey drifted off to sleep, her head resting on Aurelia’s lap. 

Aurelia gently tucked a blanket around her, then pulled out her laptop to get some work done, letting Joey stay snuggled close against her. 

By the time Aurelia finished her work, Joey was sound asleep. Aurelia gently eased herself out from under Joey, trying not to

wake her, wanting to go to the bathroom. 

But her leg was numb and cramped up, and she ended up collapsing straight onto the floor. Thankfully, there was a carpet, so she didn’t bump into anything or get hurt. 

Aurelia had just gone into the bathroom when Joey, who’d been fast asleep, suddenly started screaming. Aurelia rushed back. hugged Joey tight and tried to calm her down. It took a long while before Joey finally managed to fall asleep again. 

As she watched Joey sleeping, Aurelia couldn’t help but worry; something about Joey just felt off. 

Early the next morning, Aurelia linked up with Tyson and Arturo outside the stock exchange. Miranda was already there and waved them over. 

Across the way, Tessa and Karlie shot them a frosty look when they saw what was happening. Karlie, visibly irritated, grumbled, “Why’d she bring so many people? Is that really necessary? Isn’t that a bit much?” 

Tessa gave them a cold look, then checked the time on her watch. Word was the results would be out at eleven, but it was just ten o’clock now. 

Seeing Tessa check the time, Karlie asked, “Still no word from Cassian?” 

“Yeah,” Tessa replied after checking her watch. “Let’s head inside.” 

Karlie wasn’t ready to give up yet. “Maybe we should wait a little longer? I’m sure Cassian will show up.” 

Tessa just stayed quiet. Meanwhile, Aurelia and her group had already headed inside. 

Seeing this, Karlie muttered, “Finally, some peace.” She might scoff at Aurelia for showing up with a whole entourage, but now that it was just the two of them left standing here in the chilly silence, she couldn’t help feeling a little empty inside. 

After about ten minutes, a car pulled up. Karlie’s eyes lit up, and she said eagerly, “That’s gotta be Cassian!” 

But when she saw who actually got out of the car, her smile froze on her face. Tessa’s lips pressed into a thin line. 

Gideon got out of the car and headed straight into the stock exchange. But Tessa and Karlie both noticed that Gideon caught sight of them as he stepped out. He didn’t even acknowledge them, just walked right past. 

Any trace of a smile on Tessa’s face disappeared completely. Another ten minutes went by, and another car pulled up in front of the stock exchange. 

Tessa turned when she heard the car and saw Alina and Daniel getting out. She managed a smile and greeted them, “Dad. Mom, you made it.” 

Alina said, “Our flight was delayed, so we got here a little late.” 

“It’s not time yet anyway,” Tessat said, keeping an eye on the traflic. 

Alina noticed and hesitated, then asked, “Cassian still isn’t here?” 

“Yeah,” she said. 

“On a day like this, he really shouldn’t be absent,” Alina said, her brows furrowing. 

Tessa spoke up for Cassian, “He’s busy with work too. If he really can’t make it, I understand.” 

Since Tessa said that, Alina didn’t push it any further. Instead, she just asked, “Aren’t you going inside?” 

Tessa paused, then said, “Let’s wait a bit longer.” She still wasn’t ready to give up hope.

With the announcement just moments away, Cassian was still nowhere to be seen. Alina finally nudged her. “Come on, let’s head inside. The results are coming out any minute now.” 

Tessa’s eyes flickered with uncertainty, but in the end, she just pressed her lips together and nodded. Right as the four of them got to the entrance, someone showed up behind them. 

Karlie spotted him first and shouted excitedly. “It’s Cassian! He’s here! See? I told you Cassian would come! He cares about Tessa way too much to miss this!” Karlie gushed. 

Cassian hurried over, looking like he’d just rushed in from the airport. Tessa’s frown finally relaxed the second she saw Cassian, and a real smile broke out on her face. 

“Cassian! You’re finally here,” Brett called out, relief clear in her voice. 

“Flight got held up, but I made it just in time,” Cassian said, catching his breath. “Let’s go in.” 

“Sure!” Tessa answered quickly this time. 

As they walked, Alina asked Cassian, “Any word from the inside?” She was talking about the company getting listed. 

Cassian replied, “I checked with a friend; he said there are two announcements dropping today.” 

Alina nodded. “That lines up with what I heard, too.” 

Karlie complained, “No wonder Aurelia’s making such a scene, rolling in with a whole posse. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think both stock listings were for her company.” 

Alina snickered, “You’re overthinking it.”
