Chapter 338 Mom Taught Me 

As night fell, the soft glow of lamps illuminated Joy Gardens. By the time Lydia pulled up, Rebecca had already decked out the dining table with a spread of cuisine. 

In the living room, the sound of the car’s horn perked Matthew up. He instinctively sat up straight, trying to look imposing. 

However, when Lydia stepped in alone, the smile on his face faltered. 

“Where’s Emily? Thought she’d be with you.” 

Lydia shrugged. “Saw Emily was down in the dumps, so I didn’t push her.” 

Matthew scoffed, “She’s got some gall being unhappy.” 

Lydia caught the edge in his voice. “What’s wrong?” she asked. 

Just as Matthew was about to spill the beans, Ethan’s calm voice cut through. “Let’s dig in before it gets cold.” 

Matthew bit his tongue but still grumbled as he took his seat, “If I’d known she’d act up, I’d have kept her out.” 

Lydia was bewildered. Instead of pestering Matthew, she leaned over to Ethan and whispered, “What’s Grand beef?”7

“Mom.” Sophia looked sheepish.

The air was thick with a frosty chill as Ethan, his face set in a stern frown, broke the silence. “Sophie said Emily was the one who put those ideas in her head.”

Lydia thought for a second and proposed, “Could it be one of the servants? Maybe they were chatting away, and Sophie just happened to overhear.” 

Ethan shook his head, his eyes fixed on hers. “We’ve always kept your business private. Never discussed it in front of the staff.” 

Lydia was desperate to stand up for Emily, but Ethan was like a brick wall. Every word she said seemed to bounce right off him. 4/7

Upstairs, Ethan pushed open the door to Sophia’s room. 

The little girl was hunched over her tablet, engrossed in a game. At the sound of the door, she looked up, her eyes brightening. “Dad, are you gonna sleep with me tonight?” 

Ethan sat down on the edge of the bed and ruffled her hair. “Maybe, but first, I need you to answer a question for me.”

Ethan explained, “She’s knee–deep in an experiment and won’t be back for a couple of days.” 

Sophia’s face showed a mix of disappointment and relief. 

Earlier, when the school had tried to reach both Ethan and Nancy and got no answer, she’d been terrified they’d left her.
