Chapter 339 Use the Front Door

There were two reasons behind her reluctance. One was her aversion to going to kindergarten, and the other was that Gloria had once pinched and punched her.

Ethan picked up on Sophia’s mood. Leaning in closer, he murmured, Not keen on school?”

Sophia shook her head in a hurry. No! All my classmates are super into me.”

Ethan let out a sigh of relief.

That’s a relief then,he said, giving her head a gentle ruffle.

After making sure Sophia was all snug under the blankets, Ethan got up and made his exit from the bedroom.

Left alone, Sophia buried herself deeper into the covers, her eyes welling up with silent tears.

The kids at kindergarten were the furthest thing from friendly. They wouldn’t even give her the time of day, let alone play with her.

It was no wonder she loathed the place with every fiber of her

being.

Over in the living room, Emily was kicking back, enjoying a relaxing foot soak after dinner.

Suddenly, the ping of a new WhatsApp message on her phone jolted her.

Fearing it might be workrelated, she quickly tapped the

screen.

To her shock, it was from Ethan: [Cut the crap in front of Sophie.]

Emily was utterly confused and shot back a simple ?”

Ethan’s reply was cryptic: [No need to explain. You know what I’m on about.]

Still in the dark, Emily fired off a quick Lunatic!”

The foot soak had done its magic, leaving Emily feeling rejuvenated.

She shrugged off Ethan’s strange message and made her way upstairs.

Once inside her bedroom, a sudden chill ran down Emily’s spine. Before she knew it, a hand landed softly on her shoulder. 2/7

Her heart leaped into her throat, and a scream escaped her lips.

But just as quickly, a large hand clapped over her mouth, stifling the sound.

Ryan, who’d just ascended the stairs, heard the scream and wasted no time.

He barreled into the bedroom, the door slamming open.

There, he found Alexander with his hand over Emily’s mouth.

At the sound of the door bursting open, Alexander glanced towards the entrance.

Spotting Ryan, he immediately let go of Emily and snapped to

attention.

Hey, Ryan,he mumbled, his voice barely above a whisper.

Ryan’s face darkened.

Alexander could feel the tension in the air, and his heart started racing like a jackhammer.

Emily whipped around to face Ryan. She was about to say something, but Ryan beat her to it.

Next time, use the front door,he said, his eyes fixed on

Alexander.

Alexander looked at Ryan, completely lost. Ryan didn’t budge, his expression as cold as ice. Just don’t wanna find you splattered at the side of the house,he added.

Despite the harsh words, Alexander managed a grateful nod. Thanks, Ryan.”

Emily, standing right in the middle of it all, might as well have been a ghost. The two men carried on as if she wasn’t even there.

Ryan didn’t stick around. He turned on his heel and headed for

the door.

Just as he was about to step out, Alexander spoke up, Good night, Ryan.”

Ryan didn’t look back but grunted in acknowledgement.

As Ryan reached the threshold, Alexander called out one last time, Don’t forget to shut the door behind you.”

Emily had a hunch that Ryan wouldn’t follow Alexander’s advice.

Little did she expect that as Ryan stepped out of the bedroom, he actually pulled the door shut behind him.

That simple act left Emily completely confused.

No sooner had the door closed than Alexander, brimming with excitement, grasped Emily’s shoulders. Did you see that, Emily? Your brother has approved! I can finally come through the front door. I’ll be able to see you without any sneaking

around.”

He was practically glowing with joy, a wide smile stretching across his face like a kid on Christmas morning.

Emily stood there, still in a state of shock, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts.

Then, out of the blue, Alexander murmured in her ear, Your brother’s on my side. What about you? When will you give me the green light?”

Emily took a moment to gather her wits. When she finally spoke, her voice was cold and firm, Alexander, it’s better if you stop coming around.”

But Alexander was in his own world of elation. He hoisted her up in his arms and twirled her around, shouting at the top of his lungs, Yes! I’m officially welcome through the front door!”

It was as if Emily’s rejection had gone in one ear and out the other.

Meanwhile, in the adjacent bedroom, Ryan entered to find Chloe applying moisturizer to her face.

She glanced at him over her shoulder, a quizzical look in her eyes. What’s going on with you today?”

Ryan shot her a cold look but then moved behind her and started massaging her shoulders. Nothing out of the ordinary,he replied, his voice gruff.

Catching his reflection in the mirror, Chloe smiled playfully, So, you’ve given Alexander your blessing?”

Ryan continued to work on her shoulders, his touch gentle but his expression still stony.

Looking at her reflection, he said, Aaron’s a great guy, too. But when it comes to dealing with Ethan, Alexander’s status gives him an edge. Still, Alexander’s fine for a relationship, but Aaron’s the one you’d take home to Mom.”

Chloe let out a hearty laugh. You’ve really got it all figured out, don’t you?”

Ryan let out a soft sigh. It just makes you wonder why a woman can’t have the best of both worlds.”

I’ve often thought the same thing,Chloe quipped.

Hearing her serious tone, Ryan suddenly swept her off her feet. Not you, though. You’re stuck with just me,he said, his voice full of possessiveness.
