Back to the Hotel Part II

“Tell me what happened there,” Grandfather said as he sat down
next to Ernst.
“She was unconscious and Davis’s crew threw her on a sofa in the room. “I created a good enough distraction that Gulliver was able to grab a gun and wipe out a bunch of men while I was dealing with Davis. We were both so focused on the men in the room, neither of us noticed her sneaking out.” January sighed.
“It’s unlike Gulliver to miss something like that.”
“He was literally fighting about ten men, including Ziogas who was starting to get up after he’d already put him down once. I was doing my best to keep Davis on the floor.”
“You didn’t wait for back–up?”
“Gulliver was surrounded and Davis was right next to me. I had the chance to take him out and so I did. The guys were late getting into the room. They landed and found themselves needing to engage with guys outside. By the time they got inside, Gulliver had the room under his control.”

guts, and gore but it was straight out of a movie scene.” Ernst said as he sipped the bottle of water Bette had put in his hand.
January took a long healthy drink of the red wine and nodded, “very sexy.” She looked at Grandfather, “I told him I was going to ask you to get ordained and marry us.”
“That sounds fun,” Grandfather grinned her. He winked at Bette, “you’ll get to attend this one.”
“This one will be real,” January snorted. “Nothing like the rushed thing he made me do with his buddy at the courthouse.”
“We should go shopping for a wedding dress,” Thisbe said excitedly.
January nodded, “yes. Once this is all taken care of and Duchess is found, I’ll be thrilled to go shopping.”
“It’d be a clever way to draw her out. She wouldn’t be able to resist coming to your wedding,” Grandfather said with a laugh.
“That’s not even a bit funny.” January frowned and pointed at him. “Do not tell Gulliver this idea.”
“I agree,” Bette sighed and looked at her phone. “It’s almost one in the morning. I’m bloody well exhausted. I need my husband to get home, take me to bed and remind me why it is I ever agreed to let my son follow in my father’s footsteps.”

“You didn’t let him,” Grandfather made a face. “He made a very conscious decision to take this family over. He’s a strong man and you heard January. He took out a bunch of men all on his own. He was meant for this life.”
“It put January in danger,” Ernst said softly, “and her family and her friends.”
“This was all Davis which had nothing to do with the fact Gulliver is part of our family. Davis has had a vendetta against our family for many years, and it is because his brother worked for us and got caught stealing. He had a grudge unrelated to our illegal businesses but rather because he got caught as a young man and it caused him embarrassment and he wanted nothing more than to get Gulliver back for it.”
“I guess,” Bette sighed. “It’s simply all so bloody foolish,” she sighed.
“Mom, if you’re tired, go to bed. Your room is on the same floor as me. January’s parents will be on that floor as well. Everyone is going to be on the two floors.”
“I will sleep when my boys are in front of me and I know they are home safe.”
Bette looked at her phone as a notification came in and groaned, “they’re going straight to interrogate Davis and the few men they kept alive. Why? Surely they can do this tomorrow after some sleep?”

“Davis might not last the night,” Ernst said as he yawned loudly. “January really stabbed him good.”
January giggled, “stabbed him good?”
“I’m too tired to speak eloquently.” He looked at Grandfather, “I think I’m going to take you up on the offer of the shower and bed. My mother and Darwin should be here soon. I just want to hug my boy and go to sleep.”
“We can make that happen.”
“I think I’m going to head down to my own room as well,” Grandfather looked at Thisbe.
January looked around the room for her phone, “I really want to talk to my Dad. I want to know they are okay and to tell them to just go straight to their room. I’m going to bed. Gulliver won’t be home anytime soon and I’m like Ernst. I need a shower and bed.
“Use my phone,” Thisbe said passing her the unlocked device. “I put your phone on a charger in your bedroom.”
January stood up and hugged Ernst and then Grandfather.
Bette then gave a sigh of resignation. “I’ll go to my own room too.”
“Let January call her parents, Mom and I’ll come down with

Five minutes later, January was content her parents were as exhausted as she was and were grateful to be going straight to a room Gulliver’s team set up for them. As she locked the door behind them, she let her own loud sigh escape her lungs. Moving to the bedroom where the kids were sleeping she kissed their foreheads, adjusting the blankets over them and laughing as she noted the way Kaylee was sleeping. Despite how much the child said she wanted to sleep alone, she was wrapped around Mitsos like he was her personal teddy bear.
This. It was this, January decided as she watched the children cuddled together, safe, secure, and oblivious to the danger which could hurt them, that made her unable to summon an ounce of regret for how hard she fought tonight.
She had no regrets about stabbing a man. She felt no remorse for rendering another woman unconscious. She didn’t have an iota of sadness over the deaths of the men involved.
She’d do what it took to keep her babies safe even if it involved murder.
Turning to head back to the room she was to share with
Gulliver, she shot one last look over her shoulder at the kids and nodded with satisfaction.
