Tessa spoke to Cassian in a voice thick with sorrow, her words soft and aching with longing. 

But Cassian, sitting across from her, gave no response. His gaze was shadowed, almost cold.

Even then, Tessa didn’t dwell on it. She just figured maybe it was the wrong place for this kind of talk. 

So she held herself back a little, but her eyes were still misty and red. “You’ve had it rough lately, haven’t you?” she asked. 

She knew things were complicated. 

But with Cassian by her side, even the toughest problems felt like they’d sort themselves out. 

Getting out of here was just a matter of time. 

Tessa said, “Oh, right, a lawyer named Dudley Paxton just told me they’ve added several new major financial charges against me, but he wouldn’t say who filed them. 

“Cassian, can you look into it later and find out who’s pressing charges against me?” 

Tessa just kept talking, not really expecting a response. 

She had a ton she wanted to tell Cassian, but it wasn’t the time or place, so she had to hold back and only mention what mattered. 

“I’m the one who pressed charges against you,” Cassian said, his voice neither loud nor soft. 

He broke his silence, making sure Brett caught every word. 

Tessa stared at him, eyes wide in disbelief. 

Cassian continued, “I planned your arrest myself. 

“Your mom, your aunt, and your cousin? Their arrests were my doing, too. 

“Of course, if they hadn’t broken the law, I wouldn’t have had the chance to put them away. So, they have no one to blame but themselves. 

“You’re no different.” 

As Cassian spoke, he was eerily calm. It was as if Tessa were nothing more than a stranger to him. 

His voice was utterly emotionless, cold and distant, as if he was completely removed from everything happening, 

But to Tessa, every word he uttered was a death sentence. 

With every sentence, he shattered, crushed, and stomped out the last bits of hope in her heart. 

Her eyes were bloodshot as she stared at Cassian, as if she was seeing him for the first time, a stranger, 

The man she thought loved her so deeply turned out to be a fraud, too 

None of it was real. 

‘Is there anything in this world that’s real at all?‘ Tessa thought, her heart aching. 

“Do yourself a favor and confess. Stop fighting a losing battle,” Cassian said.

He spoke with chilling composure, saying the cruelest things as if they meant nothing. 

Tessa stared at him, stunned, his face colder than she’d ever seen. 

Every last bit of hope she had was shattered in the icy depths of his gaze. 

With the last of her strength, Tessa asked the question that burned in her heart, “Why?” 

Tessa thought, ‘Hasn’t he loved me for years? 

Wasn’t I always his unattainable dream girl? 

‘Isn’t an unattainable dream girl supposed to be devastating to a man’s heart? 

‘So, why? 

Why would he do this to me?‘ 

Cassian just gave her a cool, indifferent look and asked, “Do you really think you’re innocent?

“His family fell apart because of it. He was the innocent one. 

“Aurelia, whose identity and future you stole, is the innocent one.

“The couple who took their own lives because you trapped them in crushing debts were the innocent ones. 

“Standing before all of them, you have no right to even speak of innocence.” 

Tessa looked at him in horror, her eyes wide with fear. 

In that moment, her entire world collapsed. Everything she’d ever known was wiped out in an instant. 

“So, you mean you never loved me? Not even for a single moment?” Tessa asked, her voice shaking with disbelief and heartbreak. 

‘No… I can’t accept this. There has to be something real, Tessa thought. 

Cassian let out a cold, chilling laugh, his voice eerily sinister. “Never.” 

The word extinguished every last bit of hope in Tessa’s heart, leaving her utterly crushed. 

Her eyes stung with tears she couldn’t shed, and a deep, soul–crushing helplessness flooded through her. 

Tessa was so lost, she couldn’t even tell when Cassian had started planning all this.

He answered with absolute certainty. 

His words didn’t just break her. They annihilated her from the inside out.

Tessa’s fingers slipped from the iron bars, and she slumped heavily into her seat, her gaze going blank and empty, completely lost.

He didn’t mince words. He spoke the truths Tessa never dared to voice. 

“I used you to pave the way for her. You were nothing but the stepping stone to her success,” Cassian said, his voice cold and 

merciless. 

“Cassian Locke, you’re disgusting!” Tessa snapped, her voice raw with despair as she hurled the words at him. 

Cassian brushed off her accusation, unfazed. 

The more Cassian brushed her off, the more Tessa lost it. “You think all this scheming will make Aurelia take you back?” she shouted, her voice cracking with desperation. 

“I never wanted her to come back,” Cassian replied, his voice cold and unwavering. 

Cassian’s eyes were deep, like an endless vortex, cold, merciless, and suffocating, leaving Tessa feeling utterly powerless. 

With his goal achieved, Cassian had no intention of lingering a moment longer. He rose to his feet and headed for the door without hesitation. 

“You’ll get what’s coming to you!” Tessa snarled, her voice laced with pure venom as she spat the curse at him. 

Cassian gave a mocking chuckle, his eyes cold and empty. “I know.” 

When Dudley found Cassian, he was standing in the smoking area, head down, quietly smoking. 

The ashtray next to him was filled with several burnt–out cigarette butts. 

The area was hazy with smoke. 

Dudley walked over, keeping his voice steady. “Just like you said, his guys made a move,” 

There was a trace of disgust in his tone. “His reach is insane. Even after we took out so many, there are still some rats left.” 

“That’s normal,” Cassian replied, stubbing out his cigarette. “We can’t give him a chance to bounce back. Kick him while he’s down. Make sure he never gets up again.” 

Dudley looked at him. “Still planning to gamble?”

Cassian’s only answer was to turn and walk away, leaving Dudley behind. 

“Where are you going?” Dudley called after him. 

Cassian kept silent, his silhouette fading into the distance. 

“Stay safe,” Dudley called out. 

Cassian finally raised a hand; a silent reply. 

The silver–topped Maybach sped off, heading straight for the Golden Bay Hotel. 

Tonight, Aurelia was hosting an appreciation party on the top floor of the Golden Bay Hotel. 

All of Ashmont’s movers and shakers had come together for the event.

Everyone was lining up to congratulate Aurelia, but she handled all the attention with cool confidence, effortlessly mingling with the guests like she owned the place. 

Liam had arrived with Jasper. 

Jasper wasn’t the reckless guy he used to be. He’d grown steadier, quieter, and barely spoke at all now. 

When they saw Aurelia, Jasper greeted her with a brief nod, keeping things short and to the point. 

Liam was hoping to catch up with Aurelia. After all, it’d been ages since they’d last hung out. 

But since Aurelia was the hostess of the dinner party, everyone was lining up to greet her. Liam didn’t even stand a chance of getting close, so he let it go. 

Liam and Jasper ended up picking a low–key spot off to the side, somewhere they could keep Aurelia in sight without getting in anyone’s way. 

The air was buzzing with guests singing Aurelia’s praises. 

Big shot after big shot kept rolling in, each one more important than the last. 

Liam let out a quiet sigh. “Guess we’ll all be looking up to Aurelia from now on.” 

Jasper stayed silent, but his face said everything. 

A murmur of voices suddenly broke out at the entrance,
