Chapter 345Â
“Husband?” Mia blinked, totally lost.Â
What the heck does that even mean? Never heard of him in my life!‘ Mia thought.Â
So she shot back, “Wrong number!” And before the caller could say anything else, she hung up.Â

The next morning, Mia had just opened her eyes when Aurelia startled her. Aurelia was standing by the bed, arms crossed, giving her the full detective glare from above.Â
Mia got the creeps under Aurelia’s stare. She scratched her head and asked, “Babe, what’s up? Stop looking at me like that, you’re freaking me out!”Â
Aurelia didn’t bother with small talk. She just tossed her phone in front of Mia and said, “Some guy called way past midnight, said he was your husband. Care to explain that?”Â
“No way!” Mia’s reaction was even more dramatic than Aurelia’s, like she’d been totally wronged. “If I had a husband, I’d take your last name!”Â
“Then you better start calling yourself Corin,” Aurèlia teased.Â
Mia was speechless. She grabbed the phone and checked the call log. Seeing that number again made her blood boil. “Babe, you’re really overthinking it. He’s just an actor! I played his wife in a drama once, and the guy’s still stuck in his character.” Mia explained.Â
“It better be just that,” Aurelia replied, clearly not buying it.Â
She didn’t press any further. She just reminded Mia to get up, wash up, and have breakfast before heading out.Â
Mia let out a long sigh of relief. But at the same time, she was fuming inside. She turned on her phone and angrily typed out a message to the guy she’d saved as “Douchebag.”Â
[Are you out of your damn mind?]Â
Mia fired off: [What kind of nonsense are you spouting? Did you forget what we agreed on?]Â
[Quit acting crazy!] she added, not holding back.Â
Douchebag probably hadn’t even woken up yet, or maybe he was just busy. Either way, he didn’t bother replying. Not that Mia cared. Even if he did text back, she couldn’t be bothered to read it. She just tossed her phone aside and went to wash upÂ
At breakfast, Mia kept a close eye on Aurelia, trying to figure out what she was thinking. ‘Did she actually believe my cover up?‘ Mia wondered.Â
Regardless, Aurelia didn’t ask any more questions. That took a huge weight off Mia’s shoulders. ‘But this isn’t the moment to lay it all out yet!Â
When the timing’s right, I’ll spill everything to Aurelia myself!‘ Mia reassured herself. If I do the math, it won’t be long now.Â
Aurelia didn’t push it, since she could see Mia was feeling super awkward. She didn’t want to put her on the spot, so she just dropped it.Â
Of course, she didn’t buy Mia’s lame excuse for a second. But Mia only had one day off, so after breakfast, Aurelia drove her to the airport.Â
On the way, Aurelia asked, “So, when are you finally going to get all this fun out of your system?”Â

“Once you’re done playing around, come back and learn how to run the company.”Â

Mia’s face fell. “Learning to run the company is basically a death sentence for me. Let the pros do what they can. You handle the money, and I’ll be the pretty face!”Â
Aurelia just shook her head at that. If acting were what she loved, she would just let her do her thing. After all, Mia was her closest friend. She had no choice but to spoil her rotten.Â
After dropping Mia off at the airport, Aurelia headed straight to the hospital and linked up with Ella. Ella had already finished three minor tests, and she just had two major ones left, which Aurelia stuck around for. The big tests always took forever, so the two of them just grabbed a couple of chairs in the hallway and waited.Â
While they were waiting, Stephen called to say her paper was looking good. He’d left his feedback in the e–mail and just wanted her to make a few tweaks. He’d be recommending it for publication in an SSCI journal. That meant Aurelia had racked up the credits she needed with Stephen and was ready to graduate.Â
Just as Aurelia was feeling good, suddenly a bunch of doctors and nurses came barreling down the hallway, rushing a gurney toward the other end. Definitely looked like an emergency.Â
The lead doctor was yelling for people to clear the way, “Hurry up, please. The patient is unconscious and needs urgent rescue. Don’t block the hallway!”Â
Another doctor was speed–dialing the ER, jogging alongside the gurney and shouting out the patient’s details. “The patient’s got a post–kidney removal infection and blood clots. He’s out cold and needs emergency intervention. ER team, get ready in the trauma room!”Â
Only when Aurelia caught the details about the patient’s condition did she take a closer look. That one look, and her heart nearly jumped out of her chest.Â
She couldn’t believe it. Lying there was Tessa Rowe, someone she hadn’t laid eyes on in forever. ‘Wait, wasn’t she supposed to be in jail?‘ Aurelia thought, confused. ‘And what the hell happened with her kidney?Â
Once Aurelia got Ella’s test results, she finally felt a wave of relief wash over her. Everything looked great. Ella was recovering like a champ. All she had to do was follow the doctor’s orders and do her regular check–ups.Â
Right as they were leaving the doctor’s office, the attending doctor’s phone buzzed. His colleague needed him in the ER for a consult.Â
Aurelia heard it all, loud and clear. The colleague said the patient’s condition had worsened. The infection was out of control, and he was hanging by a thread, could flatline any second.Â
As they were leaving the hospital, Aurelia told Ella to wait at the entrance while she went to grab the car from the nearby parking lot.Â
When Aurelia came back with the car, she saw Ella talking to a man. That silhouette was unmistakable. The same one she’d run into that night. Aurelia couldn’t hear what they were saying, but it was obvious that Ella was furious.Â
When the guy tried to grab her arm, she ripped her arm free, not holding back. Aurelia inched the car forward and finally saw who the guy was. It was Daniel Rowe. Aurelia could only catch bits and pieces of their conversation, most of it broken and hard to hear.Â
“That’s enough!” Ella’s voice suddenly shot up, sharp and unyielding. “The past is over. It’s just memories, dead. What’s the point of you standing here now, saying all this? All you’re doing is messing up my life and making me feel uneasy!”Â
“I didn’t mean it like that. I swear I didn’t!” Daniel stammered, flustered. “I just… I just wanted to see you, to tell…”Â
“Tell me what? You still love me?” Ella’s voice grew cold. “Daniel, wake up. That’s not love. It’s just your unwillingness to let go, a bit of nostalgia. Your so–called ‘regret‘ is a live grenade in my life. It’s a slap in the face to everything I have now!”Â

Daniel’s face went ghostly pale. He opened his mouth, but not a single word came out. Meanwhile, Ella looked at him with zero warmth, her tone sharp with warning. “Let the past stay buried where it belongs. Don’t go digging it up. All you’ll get is the stench of something long dead. This ends here.”Â
With that, she didn’t spare him another glance and walked straight to Aurelia’s car. Every step she took away sounded like a final farewell, each one pressing down on Daniel’s heart. Even after Ella got in the car, her emotions were still in turmoil.Â
Aurelia watched her through the rearview mirror. Ella sighed and said, “Go ahead, ask me anything you want.” It wasn’t like she could hide it anymore.Â
