Clean Up Part I

January was still sitting up in bed, unable to sleep when Gulliver tiptoed into the bedroom, slinking as if he were a teenage boy trying to get past his parents. He froze at the sight of her with her face illuminated by the cellular phone in her hand.
“Uh, you’re up.”
“Uh, it’s five in the morning.” She mocked his tone, “where are you coming from?”
“A warehouse.” He stood up straight as if playing off nonchalance at being caught sneaking in.
“Funny. I’m holding my phone in my hand, and I don’t see a single update from my husband telling me he is safe, that things are well in hand or what time to expect him home.”
“You’re angry because I didn’t check in?”
“Maybe,” she lifted her chin to watch him shift his feet.
“Maybe? You’re not mad I’m coming in late and didn’t check in. You’re annoyed I didn’t bring you with me.” He called her out as he shrugged and headed to the shower. “I need to wash. I smell.”

She scrambled off the bed and chased him, “you smell of what?”
“Blood, guts, shit. Davis shit himself and so did Baldy. We kept them alive for you by the way. We have the information out of them we were hoping for. I thought maybe you’d like to kiss Davis goodbye.” He smirked at her in the mirror as he ripped his shirt over his head not even bothering to unbutton it and tossed it to the floor. His fingers were on his belt buckle, and he flinched when she punched his arm. “Why did you hit me?”
“I’m not kissing that sick fucker!”
“No? He was going on and on about how you were his soulmate and if you were with him alone you would feel it. Also, one of the guys in New York grabbed his digital reading thing and dude likes to read romance novels with werewolves, vampires, and shit.”
“Did you just say dude?”
“You’re more concerned about me saying dude than knowing Davis reads paranormal smut?” He made a face, “spent too much time with Ford. It’s one of his favorite words.” He turned the water on before removing his underwear, “anyway, we think Davis thinks he’s an animal like in the books he likes to read and he has some kind of sacred bond with you.”
“That’s fucking creepy.”

“He is not all there.” Gulliver agreed as he stepped into the shower, “you want to join me?”
“I already showered. I’ll just watch,” she hopped up on the vanity and grinned at the way he shook his head at her.
“I feel like a piece of meat.”
“You like it.”
“I do.” He laughed when she wiggled her eyebrows at him. “You should be in here?”
“Why? I have a big old bed I can lay in and not even get my hair wet and get the same results as that shower.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes. Are you going to tell me what happened tonight?”
“I will preface this with I apologize for not bringing you with me. Ford and Glenn both felt you should have been allowed to come since you were so badass in the motel. I was very concerned that the amount of violence we were going to inflict might have been too much for you to see. I didn’t want you to have nightmares or regrets. It’s one thing to do things in the heat of the moment but when you have the three of us and our team backing us, it gets to be,” he stuck his head under the shower head to rinse out the shampoo, “a lot.”

“Honestly,” she swung her legs, “I wanted to be there but then
I got back here and sat down, and the adrenaline of the night was dissipating and all I wanted was to be alone and sort out my thoughts.”
“Well now I feel less guilty. Though if Davis doesn’t make it through the night and you don’t get to be there when we kill him I might feel bad again. Turns out he’s fucking psycho. Thousands of photos and videos of you were recovered from his apartment in New York. I was very concerned about where those videos and photos went and how deep this fucking shit show went. Turns out, his immediate supervisor had no idea of Davis’s obsession with you. Davis had a crew of about fifteen guys who knew about his insanity and were all in on it because he had dirt on all of them. That bald guy Alice liked to fuck around with? Has three wives. Three, January. I fucked up massively with one. How does a guy manage three households? None of them know about each other.”
“Seriously?”
“Yes. He was extorting everyone he could to make them cooperate with him and keep his secrets. The judge who let the Ziogas pair out was that bald prick’s uncle on his mother’s side? Davis had information on the judge fucking a court stenographer who was the same age as his grandchildren.”
“Davis is crooked as hell.” January commented as she watched soapy water sluice over the cut abdomen of Gulliver’s belly and second–guessed her decision to stay out of the water. Her eyes

watched as the water collected in a dip at his hip and then like it was on a waterslide she wanted to try, it slipped down over the v dripping down to the thickness hanging at his pelvis and then down his thigh.
“Hey, my eyes are up here, wife!” he was laughing as she overtly stared at his body.
“Sorry. Got distracted with my jealousy of bubbles and water.” She licked her lips and waved at him, “continue your storytelling.”
He snorted, “woman, how are you so spry after not sleeping?”
She looked away from him and stared at a spot on the floor. “I came back here and sat with your family for a bit and then Ernst really wanted to be alone, and your grandfather went back to his room. I checked on the kids, and they were sleeping and I stood there staring at them and all I could think of was how close it could have been that I might not have ever seen her again. Everything could have gone so much worse than it did. I couldn’t sleep. I needed to know you got him and you dealt with him. Now that you’re here and you’re safe too, I’m feeling overjoyed.”
