Aurelia had only planned to drop off the things and leave, so she didn’t linger at the Locke family’s house.

It wasn’t until the sound of the car engine faded away that Cassia finally stepped out from behind the curtains on the second flo

The room was pitchblack, its darkness swallowing his figure whole.

In the darkness, he lowered his gaze, the veins on the back of his hand standing out, his eyes rimmed red.

Abigail knocked on the door, her voice full of worry. Cassian, come downstairs and eat a little more. You barely touched your food earlier.”

Cassian didn’t want Abigail to worry, so he just replied with a quiet Okay”

Ten minutes later, when Cassian came downstairs again, his expression was perfectly composed.

Abigail had reheated the food for him.

But Cassian barely ate a few bites.

Abigail said hesitantly, When Aurelia stopped by just now, she brought a young girl with her. She saidthat the girl was her daughter.”

Cassian froze midsip, his spoon suspended in the air.

The little girl looked to be in her early teens, slightly slender and quite pretty, with eyes reminiscent of Aurelia’s,Abigail added.

After that, whatever Abigail said next, Cassian couldn’t take it in anymore.

His mind was already in turmoil, and Abigail’s words just stirred it up even more.

I’m heading out,he said, setting down his fork, grabbing his coat, and saying goodbye to Abigail.

Abigail asked, You’re not staying home tonight?”

No,Cassian replied.

Abigail was about to say something more, but Cassian had already opened the door and walked out.

The car raced down the highway, cutting through the darkness of night.

Cassian kept the car window rolled down, allowing the winds from all directions to tousle his scattered thoughts.

He didn’t know how long he had been driving. When the car came to a stop, he realized, to his surprise, that he had unconsciously driven to the side of Plum Hills Lake.

The lake water was not particularly cold in early autumn.

Cassian splashed some lake water on his face, and for a moment his mind finally felt clear.

When Abigail told him Aurelia had a daughter in her early teens Cassian’s first, almost unbelievable thought was, Could she actually be our daughter?‘

Then he felt like he’d gone crazy for even having such a thought

But after that, he couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointmen

Would things have turned out differently if we’d had a child together?he wondered.

Yet, even after splashing his face with cold water to calm down, he thought still lingered stubbornly in his mind.

I must be crazy, Cassian thought, even harboring such a though that having a child with her could somehow tie her down

to me.

After searching all night, Jasper finally found Cassian by Plum Hls Lake at dawn the next day, where he had been sitting on the steps throughout the entire night.

Seeing Cassian safe and sound, Jasper let out a long sigh of relic

But when his eyes fell on the shimmering surface of the lake, his heart tightened all over again.

He sat here all nightDid that mean he had countless opportunities to end his own life?Jasper thought, a chill creeping down his spine. He rushed over and grabbed Cassian’s arm. Cassian, you mustn’t even think about doing anything rash!”

I won’t,Cassian replied, brushing Jasper’s hand away with clear impatience.

Then what are you doing out here?Jasper asked.

And he sat here all night!Jasper thought, his worry written all over his face.

Cassian didn’t even glance at him, his eyes still locked on the lake.

After a long silence, Cassian finally turned to Jasper and asked, What do you think Aurelia threw into the lake five years ago?”

This question really stumped Jasper.

Hell, I’m not psychic or anything. How would I know what Aurella tossed into the lake five years back?Jasper thought, feeling helpless.

Isn’t it a little late to be asking about something from five years ago?Jasper blurted out, and he instantly regretted it.

Cassian murmured, Yeahway too late for that now?

Jasper hurried to explain, No, that’s not what I meant! I mean, you should have gone to try and search for it when you found out five years ago.”

You think I didn’t?Cassian replied, his voice thick with regret.

He spent days, two, maybe three, searching for it in the lake.

Then he fell ill for more than half a month.

After all, the temperature back then wasn’t as mild, and the lake water was bitingly cold.

But after all that, he didn’t find a single thing.

After much pleading and reasoning, Jasper finally persuaded Cassian to leave the lakeside.

Cassian, if you’re not staying at the Locke family’s residence, where are you going to stay? If you have nowhere to go, you can stay at my place,Jasper offered.

That way, I can also keep an eye on Cassian,Jasper thought.

Hut Castion turned him down without a second thought

Thave a place to stay,he said.

Hub Where the heck are you even staying?Jasper asked.

After all, every property Cassian owned had been locked down, including the home he once shared with his wife

The only response he got was the sight of Cassian driving off without a second look.

Jasper grumbled, Seriously, where are you staying these days?”

Aurelia had just gotten back to work at the company, and her plate was overflowing. She’d spent the whole week stuck in nonstop meetings.

Miranda knocked on the door and entered, asking Aurelia about the arrangements for the company’s move. Regal Investment Tower finished construction earlier this year, and some departments had already moved over. But Aurelia’s office was still in the old place, so the company’s move was still up in the air.

After all, everything revolved around Aurelia.

Just follow the usual process,Aurelia said.

Over the years, Miranda had grown into a capable and independent professional. Aurelia had fully delegated many responsibilities to her, trusting her to handle them on her own.

How about we keep this office for you? After all, this place will still be a branch of Regal Investment, so it’ll be convenient for you to handle business here whenever you need to,Miranda suggested.

Aurelia had no objections.

She was actually quite fond of this place.

After all, this was where her new life began. It held a special meaning for her.

And the decor here was also exactly her style, which was why she fell in love with it at first sight.

The real reason was that she always felt this place brought her good luck.

Oh, and by the way, you signed the lease with the landlord yourself, right? The contract’s almost up, so we need to hurry and renew it,Miranda reminded her.

Hearing that, Aurelia rummaged through her files, found the old lease agreement, and called the landlord about renewing the lease.

But when the landlord picked up, he sounded totally baffled. Didn’t you sign for 20 years back then?”

No way!Aurelia denied it instinctively.

The rent was cheap, sure, but at the time, she barely had any cash and wasn’t even sure if her company would survive, so there was no way she’d sign a longterm lease. She only signed for five years.

She remembered it perfectly.

But the landlord was very emphatic, saying, I’m certain it’s 20 years! Because the rent you offered back then was quite high,

30 percent higher than properties in the same area.

So when you proposed paying it all upfront for 20 years, our whole family agreed. We took that money and even bought few office buildings with it. Why don’t you check again to confine it?

Would you mind sending me a copy of the lease?Aurelia asked realizing there was a gap in their information

The landlord agreed.

A few minutes later, Aurelia received the lease from the landlord!

She went through the contract page by page, and everything was exactly as the landlord described.

It was a 20year lease.

The rent was way more expensive than she’d thought, and it had all been paid up front.

But then she spotted a problem, the name signed at the bottom.

It wasn’t her name.

Instead, it was someone named Abigail Scott.

And Aurelia knew her.
