her chest, resting her cheek against the top of Kaylee’s head and fought back the tears again.
“January, you’re scaring me,” Analia said quietly, “and Kaylee too. What is wrong?”
“Well, on the way back from where we were,” she measured her words, “we were run off the road by people associated with Duchess.”
“That’s the bad lady Dad talked about.”
“That’s right. She has some people who want to hurt our family, and she managed to get our car pushed off the road and your dad got hurt.” She could hear Glenn saying she could lie to Kaylee if she wanted but that honesty was the better policy. “That bad lady took your dad from the car.”
“Why?” Kaylee’s bottom lip trembled. “Is she going to hurt my dad?”
“I don’t know,” January said seriously. “She thinks that if she takes your dad she can be powerful and run the Raptis family.” She curved her palm around Kaylee’s cheek and stared into the eyes so much like her father’s. “So, she pushed our car off the road, and your dad got a broken arm and they took him away.”
“You got hurt too, Mom,” Kaylee let out a whimper.
“I did. My head hurts a bit, and I got some glass inside my shirt, and it scraped me up a bit but I’m going to be okay. Do you know who else is going to be okay?”

“Your dad because your macle Glenn and uncle Ford and your grandfather Asner and all the men who protected us at the park that day, are all going to go get him back and bring him home. I’m going to go with them.”
“January, no,” Analia whispered. Was last night not enough?”
“No, Mom, it was not enough. Our mistakes last night are biting us in the ass tonight. I let that bitch get up and walk and I won’t make that mistake again.” She looked into Kaylee’s eyes. “Remember when your dad told you someday you would be the leader of this family
“Yes”
“Girls can do hard things, too, Kaylee. You’re not old enough yet. You’re not big or strong enough yet. Someday though, you may find yourself in a situation where you need to help your dad or your mom or your uncles. You may need to protect your aunt or your grandmothers or even me. Your dad and your uncles are going to teach you all the ways to do that and as you get older and you grow up, you’ll need to do the things which seem really hard.”
Kaylee nodded solemnly.
“Remember when we made the big obstacle course in the yard and I was working out a lot and I do the kickboxing?” She heard her mother’s sniffles and ignored them, “I’m going to take all those things I did to be strong and I’m going to go get your dad back. I’m going to help your uncles bring him home.”

“Yes but you can never tell anyone ever. You can’t talk about it at school. You can’t tell your teachers or the police officers.”
Kaylee seemed confused, “what about Mitsos and Darwin?”
“They need to keep this secret too. Our family business is our business and nobody else’s. Can you stick to that rule?”
Kaylee bit her lips and then whispered, “what if you get hurt more and you die?”
“I have your uncles and a whole army coming with me to keep me safe, Kaylee and your dad is the strongest person I know. He’s going to be home. He may need to go to the hospital for a bit because he did tell me his arm was broken before he got taken but he’s going to be okay.”
“I believe you, Mom but I’m really scared.”
“Me too,” she admitted, “but that’s because we love each other and him so very much. Now, can I have a hug before I go meet with Glenn and Ford?”
Kaylee flung her arms around her tight and despite the agonizing pain from her bruises and cuts, January didn’t complain an ounce. This hug was the thing which was going to get her through the next few hours.
Duchess Ziogas was going to pay for taking Gulliver from their daughter and January wanted to deliver that punishment
herself.
