Linda knew that Chloe always said there were plenty of supplies in her spiritual space, enough to last a lifetime.Â
But every day, she was still out searching for more, and even a single roll of toilet paper was too precious to throw away. Chloe’s words were probably just to comfort her.Â
Linda didn’t call her out on it.Â
When cooking, she always tried to save food, making sure everyone ate enough to feel satisfied, not stuffed.Â
This way, they saved on supplies and kept everyone alert, so no one would get lazy from overeating and let their guard down during a zombie fight.Â
No one had any complaints about this.Â
They all knew you had to stay on your toes, even when things seemed calm. That was the only way to keep surviving.Â
A dozen or so vehicles slowly rolled up. The old folks stuck in the middle were about to start complaining about how slow they were moving.Â
But the cars plowed straight through the gas station, mowing down zombies as they went, not even stopping for a second.Â
The old folks stared, totally shell–shocked.Â
“Wait, what? Did the rescue team bail on us?‘ They thought, totally floored.Â
As the vehicles started to pull away, the crowd freaked out. Not caring about anything else, they began shouting without hesitation. “Help! Someone’s here! Don’t leave us–help!”Â
This was a highway rest stop and gas station, packed with vehicles–most of them abandoned wrecks, and the rest had nobody left inside.Â
Everyone inside was either turned into a zombie or eaten by oneÂ
The crowded cars and all that shouting ended up attracting a whole swarm of zombies from the highway.Â
Even the ones wandering nearby started shuffling over, slow but steady.Â
The convoy was soon tightly surrounded, boxed in on all sides by zombies.Â
Zombies above level three had enough brains to steer clear of danger, so only the low–level ones–level two and below- ended up joining the horde.Â
They couldn’t really threaten the convoy, but their sheer numbers made them a headache.Â
One of the survivors, a young girl, gripped a stick with an iron tip. Panting hard, she swung it with all her strength, smashing it right into the forehead of a zombie lunging at her.Â
Brains exploded everywhere, black blood splattering. The zombie’s head burst open, and its cloudy, gray eye popped out, rolling right up to her feet.Â
She was so scared she almost wet herself.Â
She glanced back at her little brother, who was trembling with fear, and gritted her teeth, refusing to take a single step back.Â
She stomped down on the eyeball, and it squished under her foot with a sickening crunch.Â

After that first step, the zombies didn’t seem quite so terrifying anymore.Â
People around her were still screaming. She turned to them, face ashen and gasping for breath. “Stop yelling! Don’t you see the zombies are piling upÂ
Some of the old folks in the center started cursing her out. “Who said a monster like you could speak here?Â
“Yeah, those rescuers aren’t any good either! If they dare to leaves behind, then we’ll all die together” another old man shouted.Â
As the zombies swarmed around the vehicles, the survivors‘ side felt a lot less pressure.Â
The young guys fighting on the edges, along with a few powered humans pitching in, helped take some of the heat off too.Â
Chloe saw the road ahead completely jammed with wrecked cars and zombies swarming in nonstop. Her tone was cold asÂ
ice.Â
She grabbed her walkie–talkie. “All Blaze Haven members, move out and wipe out those zombies.Â
More than thirty people jumped out of their vehicles. Even the regular folks pulled on gloves, grabbed fire axes, and started hacking away at the zombies without holding back.Â
After two weeks on the road, they’d seen so many zombies that they’d grown tough and fierce. With plenty of supplies and good food, they fought like madmen.Â
Even ordinary people could take down a level–one zombie now.Â
If they ran into a mutant zombie, they’d retreat right away. Survival always came first.Â
That was Chloe’s order for Blaze Haven: kill if they could, but if they couldn’t, fell back.Â
With more than thirty people jumping out at once, their long–time teamwork meant they instantly fell into squads of five, working together like clockwork.Â
Each squad had its weakest member hanging back, taking care of the support stuff. As soon as a zombie went down, they’d dart in and dig out the zombie core, one after another, barely pausing for breath.Â
Then they’d slip it straight into their backpack, smooth and practiced, like it was second nature—almost as if they’d drilled it ten thousand times.Â
With Blaze Haven’s crew hitting the scene, everything flipped in an instant. The zombies didn’t stand a chance and got absolutely crushed.Â
The survivors were so shocked that they froze up, almost forgetting to defend themselves. Someone nearly got their neck bitten by a zombie.Â
A woman’s scream snapped everyone out of it.Â
Gasping for breath, eyes wide with disbelief, she blurted out, “It’s the rescue team! They’re really here!”Â
Another survivor burst into tears. “We’re saved! We’re actually saved!”Â
The survivors struggling at the edge were running on fumes, ready to drop any second.Â
They really couldn’t hold out another second.Â
But the old folks stuck in the middle just scoffed, totally unimpressed.Â
An old woman let out a cold huff. “If it weren’t for me yelling just now, those people would’ve ditched us ages ago. Push aÂ

little and they run the other way.”Â
The girl, protecting her brother, snapped back, “Maybe they did’t see us.”Â

The old woman immediately got all snarky. “Didn’t see us? They didn’t want to help, wait, when we get to the base, I’ll report them for sure.”Â
The girl was speechless. She really had no idea what to say to these old folks, always acting superior and being so mean.Â
The thing was, after the old woman said that, the other old folks started nodding along, thinking she actually made sense.Â
While they were arguing, all the zombies that had been swarming around them had been lured away. The more timid ones didn’t waste a second to bolt straight for the mini–mart to hide.Â
The girl glanced at one of the powered humans. “Sir, should we go over and help out?”Â
Before the man could say a word, the old woman grabbed him and dragged him straight into the mini–mart.Â
She said, “Help? What for? We’re ordinary people. Right now, out only job is to keep ourselves safe and not get in the way.”Â
An old man jabbed his finger at the girl’s forehead, spittle flying everywhere. “Yeah, if you’re so keen, go do it yourself.”Â
Soon, most people scrambled into the mini–mart, leaving seven or eight folks frozen in shock outside.Â
By the time they came to their senses and looked back, the mini–mart had already been locked from the inside.Â
The ones left behind were all the frontline fighters, ditched by the very people they’d been risking their lives to protect.Â
Among those left behind were the girl clutching a heavy metal rod and her kid brother.Â
The boy was about twelve, and he didn’t have anything in his hands until he spotted someone ditching their fire axe in a rush to get inside the mini–mart.Â
He grabbed it quickly, his face bursting with excitement. “I’ve got a weapon now! Now we can fight zombies together!”Â
The girl nodded vigorously, determination flashing in her eyes. “Let’s go help out!”Â
The siblings were the first to rush in, running on guts alone, and managed to take out several zombies back–to–back.Â
Some of the old folks inside the mini–mart watched through the glass, curling their lips in disdain. “Figures. Total freaks. Look at them, not even scared of zombies.”Â
