“You guys from Grovenwich?” Chloe asked.Â

The girl nodded vigorously. “There’s nothing left back there. Our leader told us to head out farther and search for food.”Â
The boy behind her chimed in, “Who would’ve thought we’d run into zombies the moment we left? They’ve been chasing us nonstop, and it took us over a month just to make it here.”Â
“Why didn’t you leave with those people?” Chloe asked, a hint of confusion in her eyes.Â
The girl didn’t dare hide anything. “They’re just a bunch of selfish jerks. They left us behind. And honestly, you guys running into that zombie horde is partly because of us.”Â
“1Â
Chloe’s anger faded a bit. At least these people were being honest.Â
“Ever thought about it? Sticking around here could be a one–way ticket to death,” Chloe said.Â
The girl’s eyes flashed with determination. “We’re the reason you guys got trapped by the zombies. There’s no way we’d just sit back and do nothing. Since we stepped in, we never expected to make it out alive.”Â
Those folks back in the village weren’t any better. Even if they went back, they would just end up working themselves to the bone for them.Â
Chloe looked at the women and the boy standing before them.Â
“Actually, we’re heading to Grovenwich to set up a base. How about joining Blaze Haven with us?” Chloe asked.Â
It was like a miracle had dropped right into their laps. The women were so overjoyed that they gave a curtsy. “Yes, we’re willing!” they cried.Â
They thought, ‘Honestly, who wouldn’t want to join such a powerful team?‘Â
Chloe glanced at Clayton, who immediately caught on. He stepped forward and spoke to the group.Â
“Once you’re inside the base, all regular folks will be under my watch. You’ll handle all the foundational work around Blaze Haven,” Clayton said.Â
He turned to the girl. “You’re a plant–powered human, right? We’ll have something special lined up for you.Â
“As for supplies, you’ll get your share depending on how much you pitch in.”Â
Everyone was over the moon.Â
Chloe added, “Just so you know, Blaze Haven isn’t open to just anyone. Once you’re in, you can’t have any contact with those folks from the village.Â
“If that’s a problem, you can walk away right now.”Â

It wasn’t that Chloe was being harsh. She’d already seen how cold and selfish those people could be. She couldn’t risk them sneaking into the base and causing chaos for everyone.Â
One of the women, with tears in her eyes, asked, “If I have some food, can I send a little to my son?”Â
“It’s your call,” Chloe replied.Â
Blaze Haven’s numbers quickly grew to 40. Compared to those giant bases with hundreds of thousands or even millions of people, they were barely a blip on the radar.Â
Chloe always figured it was better to have a tight crew than a huge crowd.Â
It’s not like her supplies just magically appeared out of nowhere.Â
The group was split up and assigned to different vehicles. The moment they climbed in, a blast of warm air hit them, making them feel cozy all over.Â
A box of self–heating seafood boil was handed to the girl, and she nearly cried on the spot.Â
“Thank you. Can I save this for my brother?” she asked, her voice trembling.Â
“You mean the boy in the car behind us?” Clayton asked.Â
The girl nodded emphatically. “Yeah, he hasn’t had a bite in three days. Yesterday, he gave me everything he had to eat.”Â
Her voice broke as she said this.Â
Clayton gave her a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry about him. His car’s got even more supplies than ours. He won’t go hungry.”Â
Her eyes went wide. ‘Wait, what does he mean? Sure, there’s plenty of stuff, but it’s not like those supplies belong to my brother,‘ she thought.Â
“Wait, you mean they’re really gonna share with my brother?” she asked, disbelief clear in her voice.Â
Clayton let out a hearty laugh, his rough voice full of warmth. “Of course! We’re all part of the same base now. No way we’re letting anyone starve before they even get a chance to work.Â
“Just think of this as a favor you owe me. You can make it up to me by pitching in once we get to Blaze Haven.”Â
The girl nodded vigorously.Â
“Once we get to Blaze Haven, I’ll give it everything I’ve got!” she promised.Â
This kind of scene played out in almost every car. Back in the village, these women were always the ones getting exploited and scorned.Â
All the best food was saved for the elders, men, and kids. They had never gotten to taste anything this good.Â
Emotions were all over the place.Â

The Base Truck kept plowing through the snowy landscape for three days and nights, with Emily now at the wheel.Â
Huge, thick snowflakes started coming down again, so dense you could barely see a thing. The wipers were set to max, struggling to keep the windshield clear.Â
Chloe’s brows knitted tightly. She could practically smell the danger in the air.Â
Molly looked terrified, curled up on the little bed, her whole body trembling uncontrollably.Â
“Molly, what’s wrong?” Joan was in the base vehicle, taking care of the two kids, so she was right there.Â
She nearly had a heart attack when she saw her daughter suddenly collapse and start convulsing.Â
Chloe hurried over, taking quick strides and placing her fingers on Molly’s wrist. Her frown grew even deeper.Â
Chloe’s voice was unusually heavy. “Molly, did you have a premonition? Did you sense something coming?”Â
Chloe sent a wave of green healing energy through Molly’s pulse, slowly soothing her. It took quite a while before Molly finally started to calm down.Â
Molly slowly opened her eyes, her gaze wide with terror.Â
She clung to Chloe’s arm, her eyes brimming with tears. “Chloe, I… I…” she stammered.Â
Chloe handed her a cup of warm water. “Here, have some water. Just take it slow.”Â
Chloe could more or less guess what was about to happen.Â
In her previous life, after the apocalypse, disasters and zombies started popping up everywhere. But after a year, things got way worse: earthquakes, volcanoes blowing their tops, tsunamis crashing in.Â
‘No way, is it all coming early this time?‘ Chloe thought, panic rising inside her.Â
Molly downed the cup of warm water in one go, then took a few shaky breaths before she could speak.Â
“Chloe, I dreamed the world was falling apart. The ground is cracking open, sand and rocks flying everywhere, volcanoes blowing up. 99% of humanity wiped out…” Molly stammered.Â
As she spoke, her eyes clouded with fear and sorrow.Â
Chloe gently patted her shoulder. “That’s why we have to reach Grovenwich as soon as possible. From now on, we need to move faster.”Â
In her previous life, Grovenwich had already been taken over by all sorts of mutated beasts, and it was practically deserted. But even when disaster after disaster struck–earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides -Grovenwich was still standing tall.Â
That’s exactly why she picked Grovenwich for Blaze Haven,Â
Joan looked at Chloe, still puzzled. “Chloe, Grovenwich is right by the mountains. If a disaster hits, shouldn’tÂ

we think about setting up the base somewhere else?”Â
“No. We’re sticking with Grovenwich,” Chloe said.Â
She shouted to Emily up front, “Pick up the pace!”Â

Barely half an hour had passed since the snow started, and now hail was pelting down from the sky.Â
The hailstones ranged from pinky–sized to fist–sized chunks, and every time they slammed into the windows, it felt like a punch to the gut for everyone inside.Â
The second car was unlucky enough to get slammed by a hailstone the size of a human head. It smashed into the window, cracking it before the glass shattered into bits.Â
A fierce blast of cold air howled in through the broken window, making everyone inside shiver uncontrollably.Â
Clayton’s face went grim. He quickly grabbed something sturdy from the car, braced it against the window, and used his own body to block the freezing wind.Â
