Chapter 203Â
As Brian spoke, a chilling memory surfaced, and the scene he’d just witnessed replayed in his mind.Â
Walter, do you remember the biggest villa at the edge? You said it looked like a castle, he asked.Â
Walter nodded.Â
From a distance, I saw a corpse at the entrance of that villa. It was a mutant Frostbeast, at least level four,” he said.Â
“What?” Walter’s eyes suddenly narrowed.Â
Walter Harrington was the oldest and most respected among the survivors. Back in the day, he’d traveled all over and thought he’d seen it all.Â
Everyone looked up to him as their leader.Â
He locked his gaze on Brian, his voice trembling “Is that true?”Â
“Why would I lie to you? The guys saw it too, he replied.Â
Walter turned to the others, and they all nodded in agreement.Â
One of them, a powered human with enhanced vision, hesitated before speaking. “Walter, honestly, I think that mutant Frostbeast might’ve been level five”Â
As soon as those words left his mouth, the whole place went dead silent.Â
Walter took a deep breath. “Did you really get a good look at it?”Â
The man nodded, then shook his head, giving a wry smile.Â
“Walter, you know my eyes mutated. I’m not some kind of clairvoyant, but as long as nothing’s blocking my view, I can see clearly within about two and a half miles, he explained.Â
That Frostbeast was at most 600 feet away, and I got a clear look at it myself.Â
“We’ve run into a level–four Frostbeast before and barely escaped with our lives. But the one we saw today was way bigger and tougher than any level–four we’ve ever seen,” he continued.Â
Hearing this, Walter’s hands were shaking so badly he could barely light his pipe, and his face was twitching uncontrollably.Â
“Whoever’s living in there is someone you really don’t want to cross. Spread the word. Under no circumstances should anyone mess with them,” he warned.Â
Everyone nodded in agreement, except for an old man with a grizzled beard who looked openly disdainful.Â
“Quit hyping them up and putting us down. That Frostbeast corpse at the door? For all we know, it just happened to drop dead there, he scoffed.Â
He shot a pointed look at the strong guys, clearly calling them out. “Seriously, you guys! You came across a Frostbeast that huge and didn’t even think to drag it back?”Â
If they’d managed to haul it back, it would’ve been enough meat to feed the whole village for a month.Â
Brian was a bit annoyed, but considering the old man’s status, he kept his mouth shut.Â

“Edmund, when we got there, it was almost dark and we didn’t have enough people. So we rushed back to give you the heads–up,” he explained.Â
“Yeah, that’s right! We didn’t know who lived there, so we didn’t dare do anything reckless,” one of the guys added.Â
Edmund Graves paused for a moment, then turned to Walter,Â
“Walter, our village is almost out of food. We might only last a few more days. Maybe we should…” he began.Â
Walter cut him off before he could finish, taking a deep drag from his pipe.Â
‘No way, man. The Botanic Gardens are just way too dangerous. Have you already forgotten about that massacre a month ago?” Walter said, his voice firm.Â
A month ago, the mountains got snowed in, and a bunch of Frostbeasts, plus some freaky mutant creatures no one had ever seen before, came bursting out of the Botanic Gardens.Â
Back then, there were still plenty of survivors hanging on over there, but then those high–level mutant freaks showed up and turned the place into a nightmare. Overnight, every last survivor was wiped out.Â
To this day, there are still two powered humans in our village who managed to escape from that hellhole.Â
‘Anyone who can live right next to the Botanic Gardens is definitely not someone you want to mess with. Don’t go looking for trouble.” Walter warned.Â
‘But we’re almost out of food,” an old woman said. As soon as she spoke, everyone fell silent.Â
Suddenly, she remembered something and grabbed Brian by the arm.Â
“Wait, what did you just say? A camper van with a really beautiful woman inside?” she asked.Â
Brian looked confused, but nodded at her.Â
She exchanged glances with the two old men beside her. “Was it a really big camper van? And was the girl wearing a red dress?”Â
‘How do you know that?” Brian asked, surprised.Â
The old men looked at each other. “That’s her! It’s the girl we saw at the gas station.”Â
With supplies running low, the village sent out some strong men and a few elders to scavenge for food, but they ended running straight into a horde of zombies.Â
upÂ
When they came back, not only did they return empty–handed, but they barely made it out alive. The casualties were heavy,Â
They also talked about a girl who was a real badass in a fight, but according to them, she didn’t make it out alive.Â
“Could it be the same person?” someone wondered.Â
“Seriously, with all those zombies, how could anyone survive that?” another person said.Â
Walter cut them off. “Enough. This ends here. From now on, nobody mentions the Botanic Gardens again.”Â
He got up, pipe in hand, and walked away.Â
Edmund shot him a look full of disdain. ‘Leader? Please. He’s just a coward, he thought.Â
