Chapter 214Â
Ever since Frank leveled up to a Level 4 powered human, he has given the RV another upgrade.Â
Now, the attacks from regular mutant creatures couldn’t even make a dent in the RV’s defenses.Â
Whenever they spotted a mutant on the road, they just ran it over without a second thought.Â
Just then, Emily, sitting in the passenger seat, suddenly pointed ahead.Â
“The road’s blocked by mutant thorns up ahead. If we try to drive through, the tires might get punctured,” Emily said.Â
So, everyone put on their protective suits, hopped out of the RV and continued on foot.Â

The temperature had soared, and all sorts of creatures outside were mutating. With earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions shaking things up, new freaks kept crawling out from the depths.Â
Mutant plants were everywhere, and venomous bugs, snakes, and ants. There was no way to guard against them all.Â
Especially that hailstorm a while back. It smashed most of the zombies to bits. Now, the zombie virus was going global, and the situation was spiraling out of control.Â
If anyone got bitten by a flying bug, they’d get infected with the zombie virus in no time.Â
Chloe pulled out a bunch of spray bottles, making sure everyone got one.Â
“Even with the protective suits, everyone, be extra careful. Make sure to spray extra on your body and head, just to be safe,” Chloe reminded them.Â
Everyone took it seriously and gave themselves a good spray of the anti–virus mist.Â
Sure enough, the swarms of mosquitoes drawn by the scent of human flesh scattered like they’d seen their mortal enemy.Â
Everyone gawked at the spray bottles in their hands, totally stunned.Â
“Chloe, did you really cook up this bug spray?” someone asked.Â
Chloe nodded. “Just whipped it up yesterday. Didn’t expect it to work this well.”Â
The formula wasn’t all that strong, so nobody knew if it would actually repel the bigger mutant creatures.Â
Still, since it worked so well on the flying bugs, even if it couldn’t hurt the larger mutants, it should at least help drive themÂ
off.Â
With Emily leading the way, everyone crept forward, careful not to make a sound.Â
“Chloe, there’s a giant willow tree up ahead. There’s a girl tangled in its branches who looks like she’s out cold. Not sure if she’s even alive,” Emily whispered.Â
They crept closer and saw a massive willow tree right in the middle of the road, so big it would take five people to wrap their arms around it.Â
Its branches swayed wildly, and the long, slender leaves looked as sharp as knives.Â
A girl, maybe fourteen or fifteen, was trapped in the branches, her waist wrapped tight. She looked pale as a ghost, barely breathing.Â
The tip of a branch was embedded in her artery, faintly glowing red.Â

If they listened closely, they could hear a weird slurping sound, like something was swallowing.Â

Chloe unleashed a wind blade from her powers, slicing clean through the mutant willow branch that had pierced the girl’s artery.Â
The moment the girl lost her support and started to fall, Frank reacted instantly. He stepped forward and caught her securely in his arms before she hit the ground.Â
The girl looked pretty, but she was pale as a ghost. Chloe reached out to check her pulse, her eyes darkening with anger.Â
“Damn, that mutant willow tree is actually a bloodsucker,” Chloe muttered.Â
She let go of the girl’s wrist and said in a grave tone, “She’s lost a ton of blood and passed out. Lucky we got her out quickly. or not even a miracle could’ve helped.”Â
Chloe was a healer, but her powers could only fix up cuts and scrapes. For something like major blood loss, all she could do was let the girl slowly get her strength back.Â
Frank quickly handed the girl over to Joan. Joan was tall and particularly strong. She smartly took the girl and stepped back a few paces.Â
At the same time, the rest of the team spread out in perfect sync, each slipping into their roles without needing a word.Â
Those with ranged abilities fell back, while the close–combat types moved up to the front lines.Â
Chloe held down the center, commanding the field. If anyone dropped the ball or a gap opened up, she’d instantly step in to cover it.Â
Most of their team specialized in long–range attacks. Only three of them were built for close combat. They are Evan, Frank, and Clayton.Â
Renee stood right next to Chloe. Her ability was something special. She could shut down the powers of mutant creatures, and even the strongest ones couldn’t hit as hard when she was around.Â
That’s why keeping Renee safe was Chloe’s number one job.Â
In barely a second, everyone got ready to fight, falling into their battle stances like it was second nature.Â
At the same time, the mutant willow tree went on the offensive.Â
Countless branches lashed out like writhing snakes, lunging straight at Evan and Frank up front.Â
The tips of those branches were razor–sharp, able to split a person clean in two before you could even blink.Â
The three in front didn’t even blink. They stared danger right in the face and jumped into action without a second thought.Â
Frank was a beast. Those razor–sharp branches barely scratched him, and he just broke them with a single punch, like it was no big deal.Â
Evan wasn’t far behind. With his brute strength, he grabbed a branch and snapped it in half, easy as pie.Â
Clayton, though, was having a rough time. With only Level 2 powers, he had to throw up earth walls and burrow like crazy. scrambling just to dodge and not get skewered.Â
If it weren’t for Renee’s spiritual space restriction, he’d already be dead.Â
The mutant willow branches they’d just snapped off were already sprouting fresh shoots right from the breaks, just like that ivy they’d tangled with before. No matter how many times they chopped the ivies, new branches would pop right back out.Â

Blaze Squad made their move. The three up front were just decays, drawing all the attention, while the real muscle was in the back with the ranged attackers, ready to let loose.Â
With the mutant willow zeroed in on the three closest targets, the ranged fighters in the back started powering up, getting ready to unleash hell.Â
Clayton was sent flying, but at that exact moment, the ranged fighters had finished charging up their powers.Â
Chloe yelled out, “Fall back!”Â
Frank and Evan shot back instantly. With a flick of her wrist, Chloe called forth an ivy that snaked around Clayton as he was sent flying, yanking him back to safety.Â
The ivies had tried to break into the base more than once, but since the main body was way off in the distance, the farther in was, the weaker its attacks got–every 300 feet, it lost some punch.Â
That’s how Chloe managed to score an easy win.Â
She chopped off a mutant ivy and turned it into a whip. With her wood–type powers, handling plants like this was a walk in the park for her.Â
First up were Chiara and Linda, both water–type powered humans. They unleashed a massive water net that wrapped around the entire willow tree.Â
Then Filip and Joan pointed, sending thick, arm–sized lightning bolts crashing down onto the water net.Â
The mutant willow tree got zapped by the lightning, and the air filled with the acrid smell of burning.Â
But in the end, their powers just weren’t strong enough. Even working together, they barely managed to scratch the mutant willow tree.Â
Emily was on lookout duty, monitoring every movement around them to make sure the team didn’t get ambushed.Â
Mindy made her grand entrance. Suddenly, a thick ivy shot up from beneath her feet, hoisting her high into the air.Â
She unleashed a torrent of flames from her hands, and in no time, the mutant willow was set ablaze–flames licking up its trunk and branches, turning it into a tree of fire.Â
The branches thrashed like a horde of demons gone wild. Even though it didn’t let out a single scream, everyone could see the pain it was in.Â
Elemental matchups were a big deal.Â
That mutant willow was already Level 5, but Mindy, who was only Level 4, burned it to a crisp.Â
