Chapter 218

WWhat do you want?Walter stammered.

By now, Frank had already tossed two of the people into the green pickup truck, leaving only Walter.

Clayton slung a massive machete over his shoulder. Intimidation was best left to the guys. It always worked better that way.

With a bloodstained machete on his shoulder, his outlaw nature was on full display.

He flashed a wicked grin at Walter on the ground.

Spill it,Clayton said.

Walter pretended not to understand. WWhat do you want me to say?”

Clayton’s temper flared. He swung the machete down, barely missing Walter’s shoulder and slamming it into the ground. Walter screamed in terror.

A huge wet patch had already spread across his pants.

The reek of piss filled the air, and the girls pinched their noses, backing away a couple of steps.

Clayton wasn’t wrong. When it came to scaring people, it was just more effective when a guy stepped up.

Just a moment ago, Mindy unleashed her powers and ended up killing two people by accident, but even that didn’t freak them out as much as Clayton swinging that blade around.

Clayton bared his teeth. The ground around the Botanic Gardens is almost completely covered in mutant plants, but your village is untouched. Why’s that?”

Walter stammered, OOf course, it’s because we’ve got people with powers here”

Cut the crap! Your socalled powered folks are just a bunch of rookies. You really think they could stop those mutant plants from spreading like crazy?Clayton sneered.

Damn, I can’t dodge this, Walter thought, but when he met Clayton’s eyes, the lie he was about to spit out got stuck in his throat.

Talk, or I’ll wipe out every last one of you,Clayton threatened.

Clayton lifted the machete from the ground and held it to Walter’s throat. One little push and his head would be rolling.

Walter screamed in terror.

No, please don’t kill me! I’ll tell you everything. I swear!he begged.

With trembling hands, he pulled a packet of powder from inside his jacket.

“A while back, those mutant plants started going crazy and attacked our village. We were nearly wiped out.

But then a group of people showed up, stayed for a day, and before they left, they gave us this powder and said it would keep the mutant plants from spreading hereWalter babbled.

He knelt on the ground, rambling on and on, holding the powder in his hands and raising it above his head.

Chloe hurried over, dipped her to fingertip into the powder to test it, and only after making sure it was harmless did she take it from him.

Who were those people?Chloe asked.

Walter shook his head. No idea. They were asking around about someone. Oh, wait, I’ve got a picture.”

He pulled a photo from inside his jacket. They told us if we ever spotted this guy, we should set off a flare to let them know.”

Chloe’s heart skipped a beat. She snatched the photo right away.

Sure enough, just as she thought, it was Noah in the picture.

Wait, isn’t thisEmily almost blurted out, but caught herself and clamped her mouth shut.

Chloe stuffed the photo into her pocket and told everyone to pack up and head back to base right away.

They’d already cleared the mutant plants off the road on the way there, so the trip back was a breeze. In about half an hour, they were back at Blaze Haven.

As soon as they arrived, they noticed there were even more mutant cacti than before.

With other mutant plants serving as fertilizer, the cacti were bursting with life, their palmlike leaves glowing with a vibrant green.

Once inside the base, Chloe left Clayton to handle the prisoners and rushed off to check the reply from Bluehaven Base.

Just reading the letter, she could imagine how excited Graham must’ve been when he wrote it.

He agreed to trade two heavy cannons, a tank, and some artillery for a hundred tons of rye.

The letter mentioned that William would be leading the armed convoy for the exchange.

Chloe just replied, Sure.”

Blaze Haven had about 500 acres of farmland. Before the apocalypse, that would’ve meant a wheat harvest of over 1,500

Lons.

But Chloe was growing a new breed which produced five times more than regular wheat. So she was looking at a haul of nearly 8,000 tons.

That’s a crazy amount of grain.

With all that food stockpiled, Chloe felt totally at ease. She was already plotting to expand Blaze Haven.

These days, nobody was sitting around. Even Chiara and Filip were out there, cutting rye with the rest of them.

Nobody was out hunting anymore. Work never stopped, day or night.

Except for Chloe, Frank, and a few of the real powerhouses who had to stand guard over Blaze Haven, everyone else was out in the fields, busting their asses.

When the thirtysome people they’d dragged in saw that endless field of rye, they just froze, totally dumbstruck.

Each of them rubbed their eyes hard and gulped.

Chapter 218

Walter, pinch meam I dreaming or what?someone blurted out.

Ow, that hurt!”

One big guy, at least six feet tall, actually chomped down on his own arm, baring his teeth from the pain.

Walter, am I really seeing this? Is this for real?the guy stammered, his voice trembling.

Walter shot him a glare. Look at you, so excited yyou can’t even talk straight.”

Walter, you either, the guy blurted out.

That’s when everyone noticed Walter’s legs were shaking, and as he stared at the endless fields of rye, tears rolled down his cheeks.

The damn apocalypse had driven them all mad, but standing there now, they suddenly realized that they used to be just regular, lawabiding people.

Back then, forget about murdering someone for a bite to eat. They hadn’t even gotten into a brawl before.

Oh my god, they can actually grow crops here? Walter, with all the land covered in zombie virus, do you think those crops are even safe to eat?someone blurted out.

Before Walter could respond, Clayton drove over in a threewheeled electric cart.

The cart was packed with bread and clean water. Two breads and a bottle of water each. Eat up and get to work,” Clayton ordered.

No freaking way, we actually get bread here?Every time they came to this base, it just got crazier.

Walter looked stunned, pointing at himself. Are you really giving this to us?”

Clayton rolled his eyes. We brought you here to work the fields, harvesting rye. You’ll get three meals a day, plus 500 points for every day you put in.”

The old man swallowed hard. Points? What does that even mean?”

Clayton pointed at the biggest villa on the east side. See that place? That’s the supermarket. You need points to trade for anything you want in there.”

Everyone sucked in a breath, stunned. Wait, you guys actually have a supermarket here?”

Quit the yapping and get to work,” Clayton snapped.

An average person could harvest about an acre of rye a day, but powered humans could clear dozens of acres in a single day.

With over sixty people working the fields and drying the rye, it took a total of ten days to get everything done.

By then, the sun was baking at around 104 F. Regular folks working in that heat nearly passed out from exhaustion.

Especially the old folksthey were on the verge of passing out right there in the fields.

From day one, they started whining, trying to play the age card and fake being sick.

But that day, they didn’t get any food at all. Meanwhile, a few of the younger guys from their village were chowing down on muffins, drinks in hand.
