They walked over from the supermarket, all smiles and laughter. 

Some were even crying while eating. 

“Damn it! If I’d known Blaze Haven was this good, I would’ve come here ages ago,” one of them said. 

There was not only food and drinks here, but also super safe.

They were all in their prime, full of energy. The points they earned in a single day were enough to buy so much delicious food, and they still had some left over. 

None of them wanted to leave. 

As long as they could survive and have something to eat, nobody would ever choose to eat that kind of slop. 

Walter watched in shock as the burly men walked over, their bare chests glistening with sweat. 

When they looked at him, there was a new clarity in their eyes, no longer clouded by that old, forced respect. 

Someone was puzzled. 

“What’s up with that? Looks like they’re not so scared of Walter anymore,’ someone thought. 

“Where’d you get all that stuff?” Walter asked, his eyes hungry for it, though he tried to play it cool. 

Miranda swallowed hard, her lips cracked and dry. “Walter, is that bottled water they’ve got? That water looks crystal clear.” 

Walter wiped his parched lips, shakily got to his feet, and tried to snatch the bottled water from the burly guy at the front. 

*Come on, let me have a sip. I’m dying of thirst,” he pleaded. 

Just as Walter’s hand was about to grab the bottle, the burly guy pulled it behind his back. 

He flashed a goofy grin. “Walter, this one’s mine. I busted my ass all day and used my points to get it.” 

Walter froze, eyes wide in disbelief. He stood there stunned for a long moment before finally saying, “What did you just say?” 

The burly guy repeated what he said, then turned and walked off. 

Once everyone else had left, only Walter and Miranda remained. Miranda was stunned by how those burly guys had acted 

She forgot all about her sick act, tossed her cane aside, and rushed over to Walter. 

“Walter, why aren’t they under your control anymore?” she asked, her voice full of disbelief. 

He was still in shock, his fingers grabbing at thin air as his face turned even uglier. 

“Damn it, my power over them is gone!” he blurted out. 

Walter had always ruled the village and made everyone listen to him, all because he’d awakened a unique ability 

He could bend people’s will to his own.

No one knew he was now a second–level powered human, able to control any powered human weaker than himself. 

Things had been smooth since the apocalypse, but who would’ve thought that just one day after stepping into Blaze Haven, trouble would pop up out of nowhere. 

Panic flashed in Miranda’s eyes. 

“Now what are we gonna do? If we can’t control them, no one’s gonna serve us anymore. How are we supposed to live from now on?” she said, her voice trembling. 

Walter collapsed onto the stone steps, sucking in several shaky breaths, his voice shaky as he spoke. 

“Don’t freak out. I’ll figure something out,” Walter said. 

Just then, he spotted Mia, happily licking an ice cream bar. 

She’d been assigned to work at the supermarket, where it was always cool and comfortable, and she earned a hundred points a day. 

She’d reluctantly spent ten points on the ice cream, savoring every lick. 

This was the happiest day she’d had since the apocalypse. She finally had a job, and her points could actually buy her real food. 

She was happily licking her ice cream when she suddenly stopped in her tracks, coming face to face with those murky old 

eyes. 

Her head went a little fuzzy, like she was under a spell, and she couldn’t help but feel a wave of respect for him. 

“Mr. Harrington, what brings you here?” Mia asked. 

Walter’s eyes locked onto Mia, his smile all fake and no warmth. “Oh, it’s you, Mia. I’m getting too old for this, can’t keep up with you youngsters. I’m exhausted and parched–almost got roasted alive under that sun.” 

Miranda’s eyes were glued to the block of ice in Mia’s hand. 

It was just a square chunk of ice, but in the middle of a blazing summer like this, even just a taste would be pure bliss. 

Hearing his words, Mia stared at the popsicle in her hand, clearly reluctant. After steeling herself, she finally handed it over. 

“Here, you can have it,” Mia said. 

Miranda’s wrinkled face lit up like a blooming flower as she quickly reached out to take it. “Ah, Mia, you really know how to treat your elders right.” 

Just as Miranda’s fingers were about to touch the ice cream, Walter snatched it away, his wrinkled face splitting into a grin so wide it could trap flies. 

“Mia, you really are the sweetest kid around. Got any points left on you? Go buy another one for her,” Walter said, his tone sly. 

“Oh, and listen. We haven’t had a bite all day. We’re beat and starving. Go grab us some mutlins, will you? And about tonight, we don’t have anywhere to sleep, so we’ll be staying at your place,” he added. 

Just as Miranda was about to get her hands on the ice cream, Walter snatched it away. She hurried to get a few quick licks in before it was gone, then smacked her lips, still wanting more.

“Walter’s right, Mia. You’re the sweetest, most sensible kid in the whole village. You wouldn’t just watch us starve or freeze to death, right?” Miranda said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. 

Mia’s rational side screamed at her not to agree, but weirdly enough, she just couldn’t bring herself to say no. 

“I… I guess so,” Mia mumbled, sounding reluctant. 

Mia turned and walked off toward the supermarket, her whole body moving as if she were in a trance. 

Watching Mia walk away, Miranda gave a little smirk. “Guess your ability still does the trick.” 

In a flash, she saw Walter going to town on the ice cream, and the palm–sized chunk was already down to just a sliver. 

Her eyes bulged, and she lunged to snatch it away. 

“You old fart, quit hogging it! Leave some for me,” she barked. 

Even after she grabbed the ice cream, Walter didn’t get mad. He just sprawled out in the shade, humming a little tune, totally relaxed. 

“What are you grabbing for? That silly girl Mia will bring us another one soon,” he said, not bothered at all. 

She didn’t care if the ice was tough on her teeth. She just gulped it down in a few quick bites, finally feeling that sweet, cool relief spread through her body. 

“Walter, your power still does the trick, huh? But it’s odd. Why does it seem like the others aren’t looking up to you anymore?” she said, her tone full of suspicion. 

By the time evening rolled around, everyone had wrapped up their day’s work and picked up their food and points. 

Figuring they’d give it a shot, they tried using their points at the supermarket, and to their surprise, they actually got real supplies. 

They were over the moon. 

Harry Cross clutched the chilled drink he’d just traded his points for, his once–clouded eyes now burning with a newfound hunger for life. 

He almost bumped into Walter and Miranda, who were chilling in the shade. 

Without thinking, he instinctively tried to hide the drink behind his back. 

“Walter, what are you doing here?” Harry stammered, his face turning red as he nervously gripped the bottle behind him. 

‘Crap, should I hand it over or just keep it for myself?‘ he thought, his mind at war with itself. 

On one hand, he felt like he ought to hand it over. After all, ever since the apocalypse hit, Walter was the one who led everyone through it all. He held a ton of authority in their village. 

Besides, it was the rule: every bit of food they managed to scrounge up had to go straight to Walter for safekeeping and distribution. That’s just how things were done. 

He glanced down at himself. His skin was burned and raw from working under the scorching sun, and his back was covered in fresh welts from hauling sacks of wheat all day. 

The points and food he’d earned were the result of a whole day’s sweat and toil. Just thinking about handing them over
