When Walter saw Harry’s movements, he instantly knew what Harry was thinking, and his face turned grim.Â
“What are you hiding behind your back?” Walter pressed.Â
“N–nothing,” Harry stammered.Â
Fear flashed in Harry’s eyes as he instinctively backed away, feeling like there were two people brawling inside his head.Â
One side was telling him to hand over all the supplies he’d gotten today, while the other was desperately shaking its head, refusing to give in.Â
Finally, Harry gritted his teeth and said, “Walter, I fought tooth and nail for these supplies and points today. There’s no way I’m handing them over to you.”Â
With that, Harry was about to make a run for it, but a furious yell from behind rooted him to the spot. He was too terrified to take another step.Â
“Harry, you’re ignoring me now? Hand it over!” Walter shouted.Â
Walter’s booming order made Harry feel uneasy, though he couldn’t even tell why.Â
Suddenly, his eyes went vacant, a dazed look overtaking him.Â
“Yes.” Harry abruptly turned around, like his mind was no longer his own, and handed over everything, including drinks, food, and even the points card he’d fought so hard to earn.Â
Then he turned and left.Â
From behind, Walter’s commanding voice sounded again. “Go gather everyone in the town and tell them to bring all the food and points cards they got today.”Â
“Yes,” he replied.Â
Once Harry was out of sight, Miranda was all smiles. “You really know how to get things done, Walter. Let me try that cold drink.”Â
Before he could say a word, Miranda grabbed the drink, cracked it open, and gulped it down in a hurry. She drank so fast she almost choked herself.Â
On top of a nearby building, Chloe lowered her binoculars, a deep frown creasing her brow,Â
“Molly, what do you think Walter’s power is?” Chloe asked, glancing over at her.Â
Ever since they’d set foot in the town, Chloe had felt something was off. That old guy looked like he didn’t have any spirit- powered abilities, yet somehow, he was the one everyone looked up to.Â
Back in the peaceful days, maybe that would’ve made sense.Â
But in this dog–eat–dog apocalypse, everyone was always on high alert. Anyone still alive now was probably a cold–blooded maniac who’d killed and stolen just to survive.Â
Yet they all followed Walter’s orders without a second thought, and the townspeople’s eyes were empty, like mindless zombies, just the walking dead.Â

Molly lowered her binoculars as well, shaking her head, looking lost.Â
“I don’t sense anything, Chloe,” Molly admitted, her expression tinged with embarrassment.Â

Chloe smiled and ruffled Molly’s hair. “Oh, what am I thinking? You’re our base’s seer, not someone with x–ray vision.”Â
Mindy, ever the meticulous one, parted her lips and said, “I get the feeling Walter has everyone we brought with us under hisÂ
control.”Â
Emily nodded. “His ability sort of resembles a spirit–powered skill, but it’s not exactly the same.”Â
She paused, then continued, “Honestly, his power’s barely hit the second level. It’s still pretty weak. On the way here, I messed with the townpeople a little using my spirit–powered ability, and suddenly they stopped acting like his puppets.”Â
Everyone chimed in, and it looked like they were starting to figure things out.Â
Chloe told someone, “Go round up Mia and the folks we rescued from the zombies earlier.”Â
The people Chloe meant were Mia, plus seven or eight women the townspeople had ditched halfway here.Â
Since they were all locals, they would just ask around, and they would find them.Â
Soon, those people were brought over.Â
After a round of questioning, they finally realized that something had shifted; the townspeople’s hearts and minds weren’t the same as before.Â
Things had seemed normal at first, but somewhere along the way, everyone started looking up to Walter as their leader.Â
Mia suddenly remembered, “My dad used to be the strongest in the town. But then Walter guilt–tripped him into leading a bunch of people out to fight zombies, and that’s how he ended up dying out there.”Â
Her eyes went wide. “Walter went with them, too. But when they came back, my dad was dead, most of the people he took were either dead or hurt, and the ones who survived were just off. Really weird.”Â
Chloe’s interest was piqued. “Weird how?” she asked.Â
Mia thought for a moment, her brow furrowing. “I’m not really sure. It was like, all of a sudden, everyone who used to respect my dad suddenly started looking up to Walter instead. And then there was Harry.”Â
Mia’s eyes grew misty just mentioning Harry. “He watched me grow up. He was my dad’s right–hand man, always so good toÂ
- me.Â
“But after he came back from that mission with my dad, he started treating Walter like the boss in everything. And he started acting differently. He became-”Â
She trailed off, unable to go on.Â
Chloe and the others finally put the pieces together.Â
“Wait, are you saying the person who tried to assault you was Harry?” Chloe asked.Â
Mia nodded, her eyes red, barely holding back tears as her voice caught in her throat.Â
After all, Harry was the only one who’d ever been good to her besides her father.Â

Suddenly, Mia’s eyes widened as she remembered something, and she smacked her forehead.Â
“Oh, right! I ran into Harry at the supermarket today, and he seemed different,” she said, her voice uncertain.Â
No one said a word. Everyone just looked at Mia, waiting for her to go on.Â

“I don’t know how to put it. Maybe it’s just me, but when he saw me, he gave me that old friendly smile and even shared some of his meat pie with me.Â
“It felt almost like things were back to the way they used to be,” Mia said softly, a little unsure.Â
Yvonne frowned, and suddenly all those things she’d used to ignore just popped into her head.Â
“Oh, right. Our town folks were really nice before. But after Mia’s dad died, things started getting weird, like something was just wrong,” Yvonne said.Â
The boy next to her spoke up quickly, “Now that you mention it, I remember, too. For a long time, I had this weird, unexplainable respect for Walter, like, I couldn’t even tell you why. It was just like—”Â
Yvonne added, “Like how a believer worships a god, just following orders without even thinking, like you couldn’t help yourself.”Â
“Yeah, that’s it! Ever since Mia’s dad died, I’ve felt the same way,” he chimed in.Â
A pretty middle–aged woman got so emotional she nearly screamed, “I–I have the greatest say in this. When Walter tried to assault me, I felt sick to my stomach, but I just couldn’t move. I couldn’t resist at all.”Â
Back then, she thought she must’ve been under some kind of spell, but now it just seemed really suspicious.Â
Everyone was talking over each other, listing out all the dirty deeds Walter had pulled in the past.Â
By the time they finished, it was clear. He wasn’t just a wolf in sheep’s clothing. No, calling him a wolf was too kind. He was a straight–up monster.Â
Under the shade of the big tree, Walter and Miranda had no idea they were being watched. Instead, they were totally caught up in an animated conversation.Â
They gazed out at the endless wheat fields, their eyes gleaming with greed, like they were already dreaming of living life on easy mode.Â
‘Honey, your ability is seriously awesome. Once you level up, we can control everyone in this base and make them work for us, Miranda said.Â
She couldn’t help but burst out laughing. “Blaze Haven, that supermarket, all the supplies in the base, and even those endless wheat fields, they’ll all be ours!”Â
