Chapter 221Â
When Miranda paid him such a compliment, Walter couldn’t help but grin.Â
He took the last bite of his popsicle and squinted his eyes in pure contentment.Â

“So, you need to help me out later and work with me to get the townspeople to gather cores for my next upgrade,” he said. Once his strength increased, he’d have more people under his control, and things would really start looking up for him.Â
From a tall building in the distance, Emily overheard their conversation and smirked, “He actually thinks he can be the leader of Blaze Haven? In your dreams.”Â
Frank gave her a mocking look. “Ha, Emily, since Chloe put you in charge, you better not mess it up.”Â
Emily puffed out her chest. “Like I need you to tell me that. Come on, let’s go see the fun.”Â
Emily’s spirit–powered ability was insanely strong. Not only could she mess with Walter’s mind control, but she could even reflect that invisible power right back at him.Â
As the sky got darker and still nobody showed up, Walter frowned, unable to shake off a bad feeling.Â
“Seriously, Walter, it’s getting late. What are those people even doing? Why aren’t they here yet?” Miranda said.Â
Walter stared out at the deserted road. There wasn’t a single person working out in the fields either.Â
Everyone who came to work today got a place to stay, but the two old folks, Miranda and Walter, were left with absolutely nothing.Â
He slammed his cane hard against the ground. “Just wait till I take over Blaze Haven. I’ll tear those disrespectful punks apart. limb from limb.”Â
As they chatted, a group of townpeople started trickling in from the end of the road, the same folks who’d come to Blaze Haven with them.Â
It hadn’t even been half a day, but the confusion in their eyes had cleared up, replaced by a sharp, appraising gaze.Â
It was like they’d sensed something was off, and now they were looking at Walter with puzzled, uncertain eyes.Â
Alarm bells exploded in Walter’s mind. ‘Damn it! My mind control isn’t working anymore, he thoughtÂ
Swallowing his panic, he forced his face to stay calm, keeping his expression just as steady as before.Â
Narrowing his eyes, he sat ramrod straight, his tone carrying authority and a trace of annoyanceÂ
“So you finally decided to show up, huh?” he said.Â
Walter was still acting like he was the boss, fully expecting everyone to come groveling like before. But to his shock, not a single person said a word.Â
Only then did he realize something was wrong. Seeing that they weren’t carrying anything he frowned. “Where’s your loet for today?”Â
Miranda was already getting cranky. “Did you seriously forget to bring it? Go back and grab everything, now,Â
“And we don’t even have a place to crash tonight. Who’s got the biggest room? Hurry up and clear out a clean spet for usÂ

For the first time, someone had exposed his mind control trick, and Walter’s eyes flashed with fear. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he retorted, already turning to leave.Â
But Frank grabbed his arm. “Not so fast, Walter. You still haven’t come clean to your townspeople.Â

Walter tried to break free, but Frank was way out of his league. He just hoisted him up like he was nothing, dangling him like a scrawny little chick.Â
Emily told them everything, and without caring what the townspeople thought, she just turned around and walked off.Â
A few days later, over a hundred people at Blaze Haven were so wiped out they could barely stand, but they were still scrambling to bring in the crops.Â
All the rye was hauled over to the big drying yard, a massive stretch of concrete that was already baking under the scorchingÂ
sun.Â
The temperature had hit 113 F, and everyone’s skin was red and puffy from the heat. Good thing Chloe had her ointment and popsicles, or they would’ve totally collapsed.Â
As for Walter and Miranda, once the townspeople came to their senses, they got thrown out of the base without mercy.Â
Honestly, it was a miracle they even made it out alive.Â
[Congratulations, Host! You’ve harvested the first batch of crops since the apocalypse. Reward: 100,000 points.]Â
Chloe’s eyes flew open, and she shot up from her bed.Â
‘What the fuck?‘ she wondered. ‘What the heck is happening?‘Â
[Congratulations, Host! Your spiritual space has reached the fourth level. Reward: Additional land, a river, and your base has expanded to 800 acres.]Â
The system’s sweet voice made her feel like she was floating on air.Â
‘Damn, what a pleasant surprise!‘ Chloe thought. ‘Wait a second‘Â
“System, you gave me all these points, but you’re not about to have the spiritual space take away all the rye, are you?” she asked.Â
‘No way, I can’t let that happen. There are way too many people at Blaze Haven who need to eat. If we don’t keep things sustainable, and just rely on whatever’s already in the spiritual space, we’ll run out sooner or later, Chloe fretted.Â
“No, of course not. But upgrading your spiritual space did use up some points, so right now, Host, you’ve only got 12 points left,” the system replied.Â
Chloe let out a sigh of relief, patting her chest. “Thank goodness, that’s a relief.Â
But then her eyes went wide. “Wait, what? How many points do I have left?”Â
Her voice came out high–pitched and frantic.Â
“You’ve only got 12 points left. Better get busy and rack up some more, Host!” the system chimed.Â
Chloe was so frustrated that she could’ve punched someone.Â
