This spiritual space is like a bottomless pit, swallowing up ninety percent of the cores I worked so hard to collect, Chloe couldn’t help but whine inwardly.Â
But soon, the changes happening inside made Chloe’s mood do a complete 180.Â
The spiritual space was transforming before her eyes. The once rocky, barren land was becoming fertile at a speed she coul actually see.Â
Nearly 0.5 acres of rich, black soil appeared, and to Chloe, it was like discovering a glittering mountain of gold.Â
Just then, Emily’s excited voice echoed from outside as she hurried over to Chloe.Â
“Chloe! The base outside just got bigger!” Emily exclaimed.Â
As a spirit–powered human, Emily was the first to pick up on the change.Â
“Got it. Hold off on growing anything for now. Have Clayton take a few people outside and start planting cacti,” Chloe said.Â
Thanks to the spiritual space upgrade, the mutant cacti that used to be outside the base were now inside. Since they were considered part of Blaze Haven, the system didn’t purge them.Â
But the other mutant plants weren’t so lucky. Any that got caught inside the newly expanded base didn’t stand a chance. They were purged by the system.Â
Half a month slipped by, and still, not a single drop of rain fell from the sky. Even the mutant plants outside were dropping like flies from the relentless drought.Â
The ground started to split and crack, and with water almost nonexistent, more than half of the already scarce human population perished.Â
By now, all the rye had been thoroughly dried out, and Chloe made sure it was all gathered up together.Â
The townspeople who’d been rounded up from nearby towns didn’t want to leave anymore. After agreeing to three conditions that they wouldn’t cause trouble, they were finally allowed to stay.Â
Many of them were so overwhelmed with joy that they burst into tears.Â
After days of waiting, the people from Bluehaven Base finally arrived. Dozens of military–grade pickups rolled in, each one under heavy armed escort by elite powered humans.Â
William was leading the group.Â
When they caught sight of the base, it was so dazzling they nearly needed sunglasses. Seriously, they were almost blinded by the view.Â
Meanwhile, Liana had come up with a new kind of heat–resistant seed, super veggie.Â
These super veggies were twice as big as normal cabbage. They looked a little droopy in the blazing sun, but they just wouldn’t die.Â
With the crazy high temperatures and zero water, it was honestly impressive they managed to grow at all.Â
Over 800 acres were planted with these super veggies, and even the supermarket was packed with them.Â

“Captain Yates, your base is seriously hard to find! The whole place is crawling with mutant plants, and the walls are covered in bugs and moss. I almost thought I’d stumbled into a ghost town,” William joked as he hopped out of the truck.Â
James jumped down from the truck, too.Â
His eyes were glued to the endless sea of green veggies. “You guys actually managed to get production up and running again? How the hell did you pull that off?”Â
It was absolutely insane.Â
There was probably nowhere else in the whole country, or maybe even the world, like this.Â
“That’s top secret for our base. Not telling,” Chloe teased with a sly grin.Â
Chloe just flashed a mysterious smile.Â
William glanced around, looking puzzled. “Where’s Noah? Haven’t seen him. Wasn’t he always glued to your side before?”Â
At the mention of his name, Chloe’s eyes grew distant for a moment.Â
She gave a bitter smile. “He left.”Â
William looked surprised, figuring they must’ve split up, but he didn’t say anything more.Â
He just thought it was a real shame. Noah seemed like a total badass, and that mutant cheetah of his was a real monster.Â
“Alright, let’s get down to business. Come see what I brought for you guys,” William said.Â
He ordered his men to yank the tarp off the main truck, revealing cannons and all sorts of heavy firepower inside.Â
Then he pointed at the truck in the center and started showing off the gear on it with obvious excitement.Â
“Do you know what this is?” he asked.Â
Chloe turned to look, and her heart skipped a beat.Â
“A laser cannon?” she blurted out.Â
She’d seen one of these before the apocalypse. It was Bluehaven Base’s most powerful invention back then. She remembered they were working on an air cannon, too, but that one probably wasn’t finished yet.Â
William was just about to make a big deal out of Bluehaven Base’s latest invention, but Chloe called it out before he could even show off. He instantly lost all his swagger.Â
His eyes went wide, and he grumbled, “This took dozens of our scientists busting their asses day and night! How the hell did you know?”Â
“Don’t tell me you guys have a laser cannon too?” he blurted, totally stunned.Â
Chloe chuckled. “Major York, you’re too kind. Our base is all about farming, no way we could ever compete with the military.”Â
William exaggeratedly patted his chest, letting out a sigh of relief. “Whew, you almost gave me a heart attack! Hold on, did you just say your specialty is farming?”Â
Looking out at the endless fields of super veggies, William couldn’t help but nod, his face full of awe.Â

‘Unbelievable, he thought, completely stunned inside.Â

Chloe carefully counted and inspected every cannon that had been delivered, her face beaming with satisfaction.Â
She ran her hands over each one, totally hooked. She just couldn’t get enough of them.Â
William kept marveling at everything.Â
“Seriously, this place is unreal,” he said, full of genuine admiration.Â
There was envy in his eyes, but not a hint of jealousy, just pure relief that he’d made the right choice. ‘Guess cozying up to Captain Yates was the smartest move I ever made,‘ he thought.Â
While everyone else was still struggling just to survive, Blaze Haven had already gotten their production back up and running. It was honestly jaw–dropping.Â
Chloe smiled politely, scratching her nose. “Oh, it’s really nothing. We just came up with some new seeds. Seriously, you guys are way more impressive, coming up with all these new weapons.”Â
Bluehaven Base and Blaze Haven had totally different priorities. One was all about developing weapons, while the other focused on creating crops that could survive the apocalypse.Â
William clapped his hands and burst out laughing.Â
That’s why we should work together more, make it a win–win for both our bases!” he said, grinning from ear to ear.Â
“Couldn’t agree more,” Chloe replied with a smile.Â
As they chatted, Frank, Clayton, and the rest were already busy hauling the new heavy weapons to a different spot. Guys just couldn’t resist this kind of stuff. They all swarmed over, grinning and poking around, totally unable to keep their hands off the gear.Â
They ended up in front of a restaurant.Â
Welcome Hotel,” William read the sign above the door, eyes practically popping out of his head. He turned to Chloe, sounding totally blown away.Â
You actually have a restaurant here?” he blurted out.Â
Emily puffed out her chest with pride. “You bet! Sure, there are only about eighty of us, but we’ve got it all, restaurant, supermarket, hospital, even a rec center, everything you could possibly need!”Â
As Emily rattled off the list, the soldiers just stared in disbelief, mouths hanging wide open.Â
And when everyone started talking about all the mutant plants surrounding the base, the soldiers were even more dumbfounded, not knowing what to say.Â
When they walked into the restaurant, they found Yvonne, the chef, already hard at work. In no time, she had a whole table- loaded with mouthwatering dishes.Â
Everything was made with fresh ingredients, and for soldiers who’d been living off canned food and ration bars for age was like they were seeing a miracle. Their eyes nearly popped out of their headsÂ
“Go ahead, everyone, dig in! Don’t be shy! Chlor said with a big smile.Â
She pointed at the rye in everyone’s bowls. “This is the rye I mentioned on the phone The taste isn’t exactly amazing, but it’ll keep you full for hours. Plus, it’s loaded with trace minerals”Â

William tried a spoonful. The grains were a little on the tough side, and the flavor was nothing to write home about, but honestly, it wasn’t bad.Â
Honestly, it was way better than the moldy bread or ration bars he’d been stuck with for ages.Â
Chloe added, “The reason it doesn’t taste great is that it’s just whole grain. We don’t have any machines to grind it into four yet.Â
“Bluehaven Base is a lot bigger, so maybe you guys could see if you can come up with a grain mill or something?”Â
William tamped down his excitement. “Yeah, I’ll ask around when I get back.”Â
The folks from Bluehaven Base spent the whole day resting at Blaze Haven, and when it was finally time to head back, they dragged their feet, clearly reluctant to leave,Â
