‘Wasn’t Shepard supposed to be heading to the Carter Group?‘ Briana wondered. ‘That’s a different road. He should be heading in another direction! What’s going on?‘Â
Briana’s mind went blank, leaving her standing there in a daze, completely at a loss.Â
In moments, she was trembling violently, shivering so hard she could barely stand, dizziness washing over her as her vision blurred.Â
She bit down hard on the tip of her tongue, using the sharp pain to force herself to stay conscious.Â
“Shepard!” Briana yelled. Her cry was gut–wrenching, echoing through the city like a siren. The sound seemed to slice through the city skyline.Â
Without a second thought, she sprinted toward the Maybach, her legs moving before her mind could catch up. She threw caution to the wind, not caring about anything else.Â
At that moment, her only goal was to reach Shepard. nothing else mattered.Â
Briana dashed forward recklessly, not caring about her own safety.Â
But before Briana could get close, a few bystanders rushed over and grabbed her, pulling her back.Â
“Don’t go over there. It’s too dangerous!” one of them shouted.Â
“The cops are already on their way. Just hang on,” another urged.Â
“An ambulance is coming, too,” someone else chimed in.Â
“It could blow up or catch fire any second,” another warned anxiously.Â
“Man, with things looking like this, there’s not much hope for anyone inside,” someone let out a heavy sigh.Â
Despair crashed over Briana, leaving her numb.Â
‘No, that’s not true. He’s still alive!” Briana insisted, her voice shaking with desperation. “He’ll be okay. He promised me! He said we’d be together for life!”Â
Briana screamed, forcefully pushing through the crowd, determined to reach Shepard.Â
‘Please, I’m begging you. Let me through! I need to get to him,” Briana pleaded, her voice cracking.Â
Briana sobbed, crying out, “My husband is in that car! He’s inside. If I don’t help him now, he’ll die! I won’t let him die! I want him to live, to keep living always! II–He saved me.”Â
‘Oh my god, I get it now, Briana thought, stunned.Â
When the truck was barreling toward her, Shepard hit the gas and crashed his Maybach into her car, pushing it out of harm’s way and onto the roadside. Then, he went head–on into the truck himself.Â
Briana had escaped unharmed. Her car’s front end was smashed against the curb, pieces scattered everywhere, but she was out of danger. The truck never touched her.Â
Shepard took the entire hit, bearing it all to protect her.Â

When she stared blankly at the overturned truck and the Maybach, crushed almost flat, Briana’s tears slipped from her eyes before she even realized it.Â
“Shepard,” Briana choked out.Â
‘He can’t die. He has to be okay, Briana thought. A tidal wave of grief hit Briana, leaving her completely numb.Â
‘Why did he have to do something so crazy,’ Briana thought. At such a critical moment, he didn’t have to get involved at all. He could’ve stayed far away, safe and sound, just watching from the sidelines!Â
But instead, he slammed on the gas, threw caution to the wind, and risked everything to save her right when it matteredÂ
most.Â
She survived. But as for Shepard, no one knew if he was even still alive. Briana was crying so hard that she could barely breathe.Â
Last time, she lost Henry.Â
‘It’s barely been any time at all,‘ Briana thought, her heart aching. ‘Am I going to lose Shepard, too? Is everyone who loves me going to be taken from me, one after another?‘Â
Police cars came roaring in, sirens wailing, arriving first on the scene.Â
The accident site was quickly sealed off, with police tape going up to keep everyone back.Â
Briana moved forward with legs as heavy as lead, every step a struggle.Â
A police officer blocked her path. “You can’t go in. Step back!”Â
“My husband is in that car,” Briana said, her gaze empty, her eyes red from crying. “I need to see him.”Â
Alive or dead, she had to see him. at least once.Â
The officer was momentarily stunned.Â
Briana had already slipped through the police line and was at the Maybach’s side.Â
With the help of the rescue team, the truck was hoisted up, and its tires finally touched the ground again.Â
The driver’s door of the Maybach was wrenched open.Â
Shepard’s head lolled to the side, eyes shut, still strapped in by his seatbelt. But his head was covered in blood.Â
Blood continued to trickle down his forehead, dripping onto his clothes. It was a vivid, blood–red.Â
Briana’s vision suddenly went black. When she came to, she was already collapsing to the ground. Her body didn’t feel like hers anymore.Â
Thankfully, a nearby cop grabbed her before she hit the floor.Â
“Where’s the ambulance?” Briana pleaded, her voice shaking with panic. “Why isn’t it here yet? Every second matters. He’s bleeding out! He can’t die. His life is just starting. I haven’t even told him yet, I forgive him.”Â
Her vision blurred again as fresh tears welled up. Biting her lip, she suddenly rushed forward, collapsed onto Shepard, clutching him tightly.Â

“Wake up, Shepard. It’s me, Briana! Can you hear me? Please, open your eyes and look at me, okay?” Briana pleaded.Â
“Weren’t you supposed to be heading to the Carter Group? Why did you end up behind my car?” Briana sobbed.Â
“You lied to me again. you know I hate lies the most,” Briana choked out.Â
“You’re such an idiot! You’re the smartest person in the world, but when it comes to me, you always turn into a total idiot!” Briana cried.Â
“Why did you have to throw yourself in harm’s way? I didn’t want you to save me. Do you hear me? You’re not allowed to do this!” Briana sobbed.Â
“Shepard, Shepard!” Briana called out.Â
Every word she cried out was choked with sobs, each one full of heartbreak and pleading.Â
The people around just stood there in silence. Nobody had the heart to step in or disturb her.Â
“We’ve got so many years left together! Our baby isn’t even here yet! Don’t you dare die on me. Do you hear me?” Briana cried. “Please, Shepard, I need you. I can’t do this without you.Â
“If you die, what will I do? How will I go on?”Â
She really felt like she was about to lose everything she had.Â
‘How many more people does the universe want to take from me?‘ Briana thought. ‘Is it because I never really treasured anything? Or am I really just cursed?‘Â
Briana’s tears fell onto Shepard’s shirt.Â
One by one, they bloomed into soft, blurry stains, slowly spreading across the fabric.Â
‘B–Briana.” Suddenly, a faint, fragile voice broke the silence.Â
At first, Briana thought she’d misheard, doubting her own ears. But then she realized it was real.Â
She jerked her head up, staring at Shepard in disbelief.Â
His eyes fluttered open, his lashes quivering.Â
‘Shepard!” she yelled. Briana was ecstatic, barely able to contain her excitement.Â
He’s alive! He’s still alive!‘ Briana thought.Â
‘Hang in there, Shepard! The ambulance is almost here!” Briana pleaded, her voice shaking with urgency, “You have to makeÂ
- it. Don’t you dare give up! Keep your eyes on me. Shepard, just look at me, and stay with me.”Â
She took his hand and pressed it gently against her cheek, holding it there as if trying to anchor him to life.Â
‘It’s me, Briana. I’m right here, I’m safe, and the baby is safe, too! So you have to be okay, too! We’ll be together, just the three of us. our family!” Briana whispered.Â
Briana kept encouraging Shepard, refusing to let him give up, pouring all her hope into him.Â
“I know it hurts, but just hold on. I’m right here with you. No matter what, I’m not leaving you, ever!” Briana promised.Â

Shepard opened his mouth, trying to speak, but instead, blood poured out, spilling from his lips in great, choking mouthfuls. He even tried to push her away, not wanting to get her stained.Â
But Briana moved closer, cupping her hands beneath his mouth to catch the blood he spat out.Â
“It’s okay. It’s really okay,” she kept reassuring him. “It’s just a little, just some old blood. Spitting it out is good for you!”Â
Shepard wanted to answer her, but he just didn’t have the strength. He sensed it. He might not make it out of this alive. He could feel his life slipping away.Â
So Shepard’s eyes were full of longing, desperate not to say goodbye. His gaze was tender, overflowing with love and yearning.Â
He wanted to look at her just a few more times, to etch her face into his memory forever. ‘Maybe this way, I won’t forget her, Shepard thought.Â
Even though he didn’t say a word, Briana understood every emotion in his gaze.Â
