Calling them powerless would be wrong. They were powered humans, way stronger and tougher than regular folks.Â
But when it came to mutant creatures, they didn’t stand a chance. If danger showed up, all they could do was run for their lives.Â
Chloe and the others exchanged glances. “So, your bodies are basically being used like machines?”Â
Bell looked up with obvious fear, then quickly lowered his head. “Yes.”Â
Orion added, “The dude with the wild hair who bolted earlier is one of our teammates.Â
“He’s got earth and metal powers. Used to be a mechanic, and now he can whip up all kinds of machines. Smart guy, just a bit of a scaredy–cat.”Â
Chloe glanced at Emily, who spread her hands and shrugged. “Oh, that guy? Yeah, he’s super jumpy. He thought our base was some kind of ghost town.”Â
Emily gave a wry smile. “Honestly, the way we disguised the walls was way too good; it totally freaked him out.”Â
Everyone couldn’t help but laugh.Â
But there was no way they’d let a talent like that slip away. Chloe gave a quick snap of her fingers, and out of thin air, a sixteen–year–old girl appeared.Â
The girl had a delicate little face, but she looked completely lifeless. Her skin was pale, and her eyes were cold and empty.Â
Bell and his two buddies felt a chill sweep over them, and suddenly the girl was just standing right there beside them, not moving a muscle.Â
They all jumped in shock.Â
“Damn, that girl just popped up suddenly like a ghost, scared the hell out of me,” Orion blurted out.Â
As soon as he finished talking, the girl turned her face toward him. Her delicate, pale face was topped off with eyes that looked totally hollow and dead.Â
She just stared at Orion, not blinking, and it sent a chill straight down his spine.Â
Orion realized he’d put his foot in his mouth, and his jowls started trembling. He quickly flashed the girl a fawning smile. “Miss, I didn’t mean it, I’m sorry, really sorry.”Â
He clasped his hands together in front of his chest and bowed deeply to the lifeless girl.Â
It cracked a stiff, emotionless smile. “My name is Phantom Zombie.”Â
Her words came out one at a time, stiff and robotic, almost like she was a machine.Â
Orion froze mid–bow, his face turning awkward. ‘Seriously? I’m actually apologizing to a robot?‘ he thought.Â
At the same time, he was shocked. ‘No way, this base actually has a robot this insane?‘ he thought.Â
Chloe didn’t bother explaining anything. She just told Phantom Zombie what to do.Â
“Phantom Zombie, go find someone for me. He’s got a wild, spiky haircut,” As she said this, she glanced at the three standingÂ

nearby.Â
Bell quickly chimed in, “He’s wearing a blue top and black shorts.”Â
Phantom Zombie nodded, and with a whoosh, she blinked out of sight.Â
Orion’s eyes bulged. “Damn, robots are this crazy now?”Â
Emily coughed lightly. “Come on, they’re not robots. They’re zombies.”Â
The three of them were totally stunned.Â
Orion’s knees nearly gave out, and he almost toppled over. “Bell, give me a hand here.”Â

The tall and skinny guy named Atlas wasn’t doing any better. He’d been silent since they entered the base, and now he looked like he might pass out.Â
All these shocks were just too much for him; his legs were trembling uncontrollably.Â
The quiet living room echoed with the sound of three people swallowing hard.Â
Emily suddenly leaned in close, and the three scaredy–cats instantly shrieked in terror. “Oh my god!”Â
They staggered back several steps, landed hard on the floor, and kept trying to get up, but just couldn’t manage it.Â
“That zombie’s already at the sixth level,” Emily announced.Â
At that, all three of them gasped at once.Â
Orion couldn’t help blurting out, “No way! You gotta be messing with us, right? The highest level powered human in the world is only fourth level, how could there even be a sixth level?”Â
They just couldn’t wrap their heads around it.Â
Even at the biggest base they’d ever been to, the leader of the toughest merc squad was only fourth level, the best they had.Â
Chloe didn’t even bother with their shock. She just reached into her spiritual space and whipped out some rye.Â
She gave a handful to each of Bell and his buddies.Â
They looked totally lost at first, but then something clicked. Eyes shut, powers on, smoke started curling from their hands. The rye was getting shelled and coming together right in front of everyone, turning into flatbread in seconds.Â
Everyone just stared, jaws dropped, unable to hold back their amazement.Â
‘Man, the world’s got all kinds of crazy stuff. Never thought I’d see a power like that,” one of the guys blurted out.Â
After the apocalypse, tons of people started awakening powers, with all kinds of abilities popping up left and right.Â
The strongest ones were the classic elements, including metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. The rare powers were stuff like lightning, spiritual space, or healing abilities.Â
But most folks just got pretty basic powers. If you were always working with your hands, maybe your fingers would get powered up. If one ran a lot, one might end up with speed powerÂ
It was just random stuff like that.Â

Everyone was eyeing the three of them as they’d just stumbled across some hidden gems.Â

Bell and his crew felt super awkward under all those stares. No one would’ve thought that the throwaway powers nobody cared about outside would actually be such a big deal here in the base.Â
Their powers were pretty lame, practically useless in a fight, couldn’t throw a punch or take one either.Â
Even as the third–level powered humans, they were just a notch above normal people. If they were any stronger, they wouldn’t be struggling so hard right now.Â
Outside the base, Caspian was lying on the ground, battered and bleeding, completely surrounded by mutant plants.Â
Blood kept streaming from his wounds, driving the mutant plants into an even crazier frenzy.Â
ivies and claws were flailing everywhere, all scrambling to get a taste of him.Â
Caspian finally broke down, sobbing, “Please, don’t eat me! I taste awful, I swear!”Â
His hands, feet, and head were all viciously ensnared by five different mutant plants, each one fighting to rip him apart for themselves.Â
‘Shit, this is just like being drawn and quartered, except it’s five freaking mutant plants doing it,‘ he thought, despair washing over him.Â
‘Man, if I’d known it’d end up like this, I should’ve just gone into that creepy base with my teammates,’ he thought, sobbing uncontrollably.Â
Caspian could feel five mutant plants yanking him from all directions, the one around his neck squeezing so tight he was about to pass out.Â
Right when he thought he was about to be ripped apart by the mutant plants, he could breathe again, the force holding him disappeared, and he dropped to the ground.Â
He kept his eyes squeezed shut, bracing for pain, but nothing happened.Â
“Huh? It doesn’t hurt?” he murmured, confused.Â
He cracked his eyes open just a sliver and found himself staring straight into a pale, doll–like face. Its gray, lifeless eyes left no doubt that it was a zombie.Â
Caspian’s heart nearly leapt out of his throat, and all the color drained from his face.Â
“Z–Zombie?” he squeaked out, barely able to get the word out.Â
I’m so dead. First mutant plants, now zombies too? With barely any meat on me, there’s not even enough for them to fight over, he thought, panic flooding his mind.Â
But before he could even process what was happening, a rush of wind whooshed past his ears, and the next thing he knew, he was already 300 feet away.Â
“Hey, if you’re gonna kill me, just finish me off already! Stop playing with me like this!” he was practically in tears.Â
‘Is this zombie gonna mess me up like those two freaks before? Are they gonna torture me half to death and then eat me?‘ he was freaking out inside. ‘Please, no!‘Â
