Chapter 236Â
13.55 200Â
An old Base Truck slowly rolled along the highway in Grovenwich, with overgrown bushes lining both sides of the road.Â
As the truck passed by, the mutant insects hiding in the bushes seemed to catch a familiar scent.Â
In a flash, they vanished without a trace.Â
That was because lately, the powered humans from Blaze Haven had hunted the local mutant creatures so thoroughly that the mutant creatures didn’t even dare show their faces anymore.Â
Nowadays, there was hardly anything dangerous left out there. Even regular folks could go out and take down a few mutant creatures if they wanted.Â
Before long, the truck rolled out of Grovenwich. With no more mutant creatures blotting out the sun, the heat outside slammed into them like a wall. It was so intense that it made their skin crawl.Â
The people from Bluehaven Base had already arrived and were resting at a desolate village. When they spotted a beat–up, paint–chipped Base Truck rolling toward them in the distance, they were all a bit dazed.Â
James was the first to notice the vehicle. He hesitated for a moment, and then called William over, pointing at the slowly approaching Base Truck.Â
“William, is that Blaze Squad’s Base Truck?” James asked.Â
Out here, everyone went by their team name, and rightÂ
now, theyÂ
were known as Bluehaven Squad.Â
William was sitting atop a pile of rubble, idly waving his fan as he kept a sharp lookout. When he heard the question, he glanced to the right.Â
He chuckled softly and playfully tapped James on the head with his fan. “Come on, you know how tough Blaze Haven is. There’s no way they’d show up in a beat–up ride like that.”Â
James nodded. “Oh, then it must be powered humans from another base.”Â
He thought to himself, ‘Yeah, that makes sens fighters.Â
These days, every faction heading to Lakeside brings a whole army of strongÂ
‘Even if Blaze Haven doesn’t have a ton of people, there’s no way they’d only show up with just a handful.Â
He glanced up at the blazing sky, his mouth dry as dust. Carefully, he pulled a bottle of water from his pack and took a tiny sip.Â
But in the end, he couldn’t bring himself to drink more, so he tucked the bottle back into his pack.Â
He thought, ‘No telling how long the road ahead is. Better save it!Â
They did have a space–powered human on their team, but he’d only just unlocked his power, and his spiritual space was still pretty small.Â
Most of it was taken up by combat gear, so there wasn’t much room left for food and water.Â
They did have a few water–powered humans, but there weren’t enough of them. The water they could produce each day was barely enough for a hundred people to get a drink.Â
James kept fiddling with the water bottle in his pack, but in the end, he just couldn’t bring himself to drink it.Â
The beat–up Base Truck finally rolled into view.Â

Chapter 236Â
They expected it to just drive right past, but to their surprise, it actually came to a stop.Â
William and James exchanged a glance, and both readied their powers in their hands, just in case.Â
To their surprise, Chloe was the first one to hop out of the Base Truck.Â
The whole group was left speechless.Â
She was rocking some simple sportswear, grinning from ear to ear. “Sorry for keeping you guys waiting.”Â
William blinked, pointing at the Base Truck, totally dumbfounded.Â
“I remember your Base Truck used to be the fanciest luxury model. How’d it end up looking like this after just a few months?” he asked.Â
“Yeah, no kidding. After all those close calls and getting battered by hailstorms, it’s a miracle this thing still rims” Chloe teased.Â
James came over, wiping the sweat from his forehead.Â
“Captain Yates, what happened to you? You look like you’ve been through hell! Why not come back to us? Your deputy leader spot is still waiting for you,” he said.Â
Chloe just laughed and waved him off.Â
“If you ever want to join Blaze Haven, the deputy leader position will always be open for you,” she replied.Â
William burst out laughing. “You know, if I weren’t a soldier, I’d totally be tempted by that offer.”Â
But he just couldn’t bring himself to abandon the hundreds of thousands of refugees at Bluehaven Base. Otherwise, he might have seriously considered switching jobs.Â
Chloe was a true individualist. She’d never let hundreds of thousands of people mooch off Blaze Haven for nothing.Â
Suddenly, James stepped forward and said, “What about me?”Â
William was startled, grabbed James by the arm and pulled him back, glaring at him. “Are you seriously trying to switch teams right in front of me?”Â
James just grinned. “Who wouldn’t want to join? Blaze Haven’s just way too good.”Â
He’d been there once before when they delivered weapons, and it blew his mind. They’d actually brought farming back. Probably the only place on earth that’d managed that.Â
William waved his hand and said, “Alright, alright, let’s get moving.”Â
As they chatted, several groups had already passed by.Â
Usually, they wouldn’t spot a single person out here, but now, teams of hundreds were passing by one after another.Â
Guess a lot more people made it through the last disaster than anyone expected.Â
Humans were weird. They were probably the most fragile creatures in the world, but also the toughest.Â
Sometimes a single disaster could kill millions, but there were always people tough enough to survive against all odds.Â
Frank and the others got out of the Base Truck one after another, nodding at William as they greeted him.Â
The others just stared at the battered Base Truck, completely speechless.Â

Chapter 236Â
James finally blurted out, “Captain Yates, you guys only brought this many people?”Â
He thought, ‘Wait, are there actually two kids in there?Â
‘Seriously, with this group, are you sure you’re here to fight and not just on vacation?‘Â
Chloe caught the shock on William’s face, casually tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, but she didn’t bother explaining.Â
“That’s right, just eight of us,” she replied.Â
She trusted William, sure, but trust only went so far. They could be great allies, even good partners, but that didn’t mean she’d ever show her true hand.Â
That would be like laying all her weaknesses bare for everyone to see. No one knew what might happen down the line.Â
Even brothers could turn on each other when push came to shove.Â
James looked at Chloe, totally baffled. “Seriously, you brought these few people, and even kids? Are you sure you’re not just here to chill instead of fight?”Â
Chloe shrugged with a grin. “Yeah, you could say that.”Â
Emily’s eyes sparkled. “Blaze Haven isn’t like Bluehaven Base. You guys have way more people. We’re pretty small, and only a handful of powered humans can actually fight.Â
“The rest are too weak. If we brought them, they’d just be walking targets.”Â
Hearing that, William glanced over at Chiara and Filip, trying to figure them out.Â
Chiara, ever the charmer, grinned sweetly. “Hi, Mr. York! Chloe said she wanted to show me and my brother the world. We’ll be good, promise!”Â
William’s mouth twitched. Compared to his own squad of over a hundred, Chloe’s little group really did look like she wasn’t taking things seriously at all.Â
If he didn’t know she never went into a fight without a plan, he might’ve actually believed it.Â
If it had been anyone else, William would’ve totally called them out on the spot.Â
He shot the two kids a deep, thoughtful look, thinking, “These two must have some special powers. Otherwise, Chloe would never let her own family walk into danger like this.‘Â
William might have thought that, but the powered humans behind him definitely didn’t see it that way. They were all apocalypse veterans, and honestly, they never expected their captain to be waiting for a group like this.Â
It was only natural for them to feel a bit superior, and maybe even a little dismissive.Â
Still, nobody said anything out loud, not wanting to embarrass William. They just figured they’d picked up a few extra teammates. As long as these newcomers didn’t mess things up when the fighting started, it’d be fine.Â
Once another massive group had passed by on the highway ahead, William clapped his hands and called out, “Alright, everyone, get ready. We’re heading out in five minutes.”Â
