Chloe had really nurtured that piece of mutant ivy. Inside her spiritual space, it had already taken root, grown strong by absorbing all the nutrients, and its power was pretty impressive. 

Once the ivy’s vines tripped the monster, Chloe pulled it back into her spiritual space. The team moved in and, just like before, finished the monster off without any fuss. 

It was a mutant beast that had just reached the sixth level. 

“Chloe, we could eat it, but it grew up on human flesh. Let’s just skip it,” one of the team members said. 

After all, eating this mutant beast’s meat was basically eating human flesh indirectly. Just thinking about it made everyone feel grossed out. 

“Alright, once we get to Lakeside, we’ll either sell it or feed it to Phantom Zombie,” Chloe replied. 

Zombies loved this kind of bloody, meaty stuff. It might not taste great, but it was super nutritious. 

Compared to all the processed junk from the old world, this mutant meat was loaded with minerals the body actually needed. 

After that, the Blaze Squad members killed a bunch more of those monsters, and the spiritual space was visibly filling up. 

Finally, night fell. 

During the apocalypse, nights were pitch black. Shrouded in heavy fog, the darkness felt even more unsettling. 

Chloe pulled the Base Truck out of her spiritual space. “Everyone, get inside and get some rest,” she said. 

The Base Truck had been reinforced, so most mutant beasts couldn’t breach it in an instant. At least tonight, everyone could finally sleep without worrying about monsters crashing in. 

Frank dropped the protective net with everyone watching. 

“Whoa, I feel even safer now! Frank, you’re such a pro,” Emily said, slinging her arm around his shoulders. 

Frank shot her a glare and brushed her off. “Hey, I’m a married man. Hands off.” 

Emily rolled her eyes. “Please, you are not my type. Only Joan would ever marry you.” 

At the mention of his wife, Frank’s face was full of happiness. He sprawled out on the couch, hands behind his head. 

“As long as Joan adores me. Single girl, you wouldn’t understand the joy of married life,” Frank said smugly 

All the single folks in the room rolled their eyes. 

Emily covered her cars and turned away in disgust. “Ugh, you are so pathetic.” 

She glanced at Chloe and suddenly said, “Chloe, next time we head out on a mission, let’s bring Joan along. Let her see what’s out there. There are tons of cool, reliable guys outside. She could really broaden her horizons.” 

Frank bounced up from the couch, then slowly sprawled back down. “Pin, Joan’s only got me on her mind.” 

Emily couldn’t help but snicker. “Really? Isn’t it you who’s always whining about too many guys out there, so you won’t let Joan out?” 

Time drifted by as Frank and Emily kept hantering back and forth.

Chapter 242 

Nothing happened; everything stayed peaceful, at least until the dead of night. 

Chloe jolted awake in the middle of the night and sprang out of bed in a flash.

Whenever they were out in the wild, everyone slept with their clothes on, ready to jump into action if anything happened. 

At almost the exact same moment, Frank and the rest snapped awake, too, shooting each other cautious looks. 

Frank muttered, “Feels like there’s an earthquake going on outside.” 

Emily piped up, “Do you think the quake from Lakeside is hitting us now?” 

Lakeside and Riverside were right next to each other, so it was not surprising if the tremors reached them. 

Emily’s face kept changing. “The fog’s messing with my spirit–powered senses, but my hearing’s still fine. I swear, I can hear some massive battle going on in the distance. It’s really intense.” 

She squinted. “Maybe it’s not an earthquake after all.” 

Chloe asked, “Can you pick up any of their conversation? Get a sense of how far away they are?” 

Emily shook her head. “It’s way too far. But honestly, that voice sounds a lot like William from Bluehaven Base.” 

“Can you pinpoint where the sound’s coming from?” Chloe pressed. 

Emily listened intently for a moment, then nodded. “Yeah, I can.” 

Frank scrambled into the driver’s seat, while Emily slid into the passenger side, ready to act as navigator and give directions. 

Chloe’s frown deepened. She’d thought the fog was just because mutant beasts had taken over this street, but now it looked like the whole city of Riverside was completely shrouded in fog. 

The weird thing was, with something this major happening, not a single powered human had noticed, and there wasn’t any mention of the fog on the radio either. 

Either no one had ever come in here, or every powered human who did ended up dead. 

The truck carefully inched forward through the darkness, the earthquake’s rumbling growing louder with every foot. Now, everyone could clearly hear the sounds of fighting echoing in the distance. 

Frank stopped the truck and looked at Chloe, clearly asking, “What should we do now?” 

Chloe glanced at Emily. “Can you listen again? Is that William’s voice?” 

Emily nodded, but her expression shifted. “I don’t hear Captain York, but there’s a guy crying loudly. It sounds a lot like James.” 

Without saying a word, Chloe hoisted her fire axe and strode out, Blaze Squad trailing right behind her. 

They took just a few steps out, and a thunderous blast echoed from afar. Chloe stopped in her tracks. It was the unmistakable sound of Bluehaven Base’s latest invention, the air cannon. 

Her pace quickened even more as she rushed forward. 

When they finally reached the source of the commotion, they saw tons of powered humans, maybe a hundred or more, surrounding a sixth–level mutant dinosaur. Everyone looked hattered and desperate. 

The ground was littered with bodies, some missing arms or legs, some nothing but half a torso, and some missing their heads entirely. Not a single corpse was left intact.

Right in the center, the mutant dinosaur was getting blasted by air cannons and laser cannons. Its armor–like skin was starting to split open, and blood was pouring from every wound. 

That only made it more ferocious. It swung its massive jaws toward the humans and swallowed a soldier whole in one terrifying bite. 

Each time the laser cannon fired, the whole area flashed bright, and Chloe could see the soldiers, wounded, faces pale, looking absolutely beaten down. 

Chloe looked closely and realized all the powerful powered humans who’d been fighting alongside William had already fallen. Now, only the soldiers with the laser cannons were barely hanging on. 

“Ah!” The mutant dinosaur kicked William hard, sending him flying. Blood gushed out, tracing a crimson arc through the air as he soared. 

At that speed, if he hit the ground, he’d be dead for sure. 

“William!” The soldiers‘ eyes went red with rage and grief as they watched helplessly. 

Just when everyone thought William was done for, someone swooped in and snatched him out of the air before he crashed. 

As soon as they landed, William coughed up more blood, his eyes rolled back, and he blacked out. 

As the mutant dinosaur went wild, tearing through nearly half the soldiers, Blaze Squad jumped into action. 

Filip struck with a bolt of lightning, making the monster freeze up for a moment, then the air was suddenly filled with the stench of charred meat. 

Right after, Mindy blanketed the area with fire, and a dragon of flames swallowed the beast whole. It threw its head back and howled in agony, and before long, it was roasted to death right then and there. 

The air was thick with the smell of roasted meat. 

Pretty soon, powered humans and mutant beasts would be rushing over, all scrambling to get a piece of the action. 

When the surviving soldiers saw Chloe, they finally felt like they could breathe again. 

“Thank you, Captain Yates, for saving us,” one of the soldiers said. With tears in his eyes, he bowed to her.
