Chapter 179 

Ash and Calvert entered the elevator.

Ash looked tired. She leaned back against the railing with her hands, her posture relaxed. Her eyes were slightly closed. 

She said, “It seems there is quite a story between Finn and Vanessa.” 

Finn’s interruption brought their childish bickering to an end. 

Calvert stood shoulder to shoulder with her, glancing sideways. “Why don’t you just ask them? Would you believe what I have to say?” 

“Yes, but you have to tell me in detail. Why is it that neither of them makes a move when they clearly have feelings for each other?” Ash opened her eyes and asked. 

As he was about to speak, the elevator doors opened. He stepped forward, “Like I said, what’s in it for me?” 

She hurried after him. “What’s in it for you? I just want the gossip. You really are a businessman at heart. Do you even want something in return for this?” 

“Well, consider this information sharing. I can’t very well not get anything in return.” Calvert’s expression remained unchanged as he spoke righteously. 

Ash pondered for a moment, her curiosity getting the better of her. “Fine, consider it a favor I owe you. But this favor has to be within my power and cannot violate my principles.” 

Calvert paused, glancing at her from the corner of his eye. “You’re really curious, aren’t you? But what does someone else’s life have to do with you? 

“Even if you knew, what difference would it make?” Calvert was genuinely curious about Ash’s true thoughts. 

He thought, Is it just for the sake of gossip?” 

She curled her lip. “Do I need to tell you that? Just tell me. We already made an equal exchange. If you’re asking me for a reason, shouldn’t I ask you to do something as well?” 

Calvert said. “They were high school classmates and neighbors. They met through a mutual friend, who is a girl, but that girl died accidentally in their second year of high school. 

“The girl liked Finn. At that time, the girl didn’t know Finn had just confessed his love to Vanessa. She was preparing for a confession by the lake. The two of them told the girl the news on the phone. The girl was lost in thought on her way home and fell into the river. She drowned and died by the time she was rescued.” 

Calvert summarized the matter in two sentences. “That’s about it. Understand?” 

Ash’s mouth opened slightly, her eyes flickering with pity. “So they think it was because they were together that the girl died? 

“Well, yes, because both confessions were chosen on the same day. Vanessa took a year off from school because of this and ended up going to the same university as Finn. 

The two of them have been in contact on and off over the years, but this has always been a problem to both of them” Calvert’s expression was indifferent, and his tone was calm as he explained 

It was like a storyteller, without a trace of personal emotion.

Ash lowered her eyes, unable to imagine how painful it was for Vanessa at that time since her happiness was built on the death of another. 

She felt a pang in her heart for a while, and sighed, “So Vanessa has been living in the shadow of that girl’s accidental death all these years?” 

“Probably.” Calvert didn’t have much contact with Vanessa. Everything he knew was through Finn. 

She said, “But it wasn’t their fault. A lot of times, we can’t predict when an accident will happen. It’s not fair to one to put the pain on themselves.” 

He didn’t say anything, his eyes looking out the window at the distance. 

Life was always hard to explain.
