Chapter 248Â
Hendrix rubbed his nose and shot Chloe a flirty wink. “Hey, gorgeous, if you ever need a man, I’m always here for you.”Â
Suddenly, a thick vine of mutant ivy appeared out of nowhere in mid–air, whipping down with a sharp whistling sound, aiming straight for Hendrix’s head.Â
He quickly dodged to the side, and the vine slammed into the ground, cracking the concrete and leaving a long, deep trench.Â
“Oh my god!” Hendrix exclaimed, startled. He clutched his chest, still shaken.Â
“Chloe, you really weren’t kidding! Damn, you nearly scared me to death!” Hendrix blurted out.Â
Chloe’s voice was cold as ice. “That was your warning. Next time, don’t expect me to go easy on you.”Â
Emily chimed in, dead serious, “Yeah, and if you pull that stunt again, watch out. I’ll make you wish you were never born.”Â
That whip was a warning not just for Hendrix, but for everyone else around, too.Â
“Alright, everyone’s got what they need. Let’s wrap it up and head out,” Chloe said.Â
The powered humans glanced at each other, seeing their own fear mirrored in each other’s eyes.Â
“This place gives me the creeps. Maybe we should stick together. There’s strength in numbers,” someone suggested.Â
Ishaan’s group was the smallest. Even though they were all fifth–levels, if they ran into a swarm of mutant insects, they’d be in real trouble.Â
Everyone was on the same page, except for Blaze Squad, who kept their mouths shut, and Bluehaven Squad, who just waitedÂ
for Chloe to call the shots.Â
They followed Chloe’s lead without question; whatever she said, they did.Â
Time dragged on. It was already noon, but the fog hadn’t cleared. If anything, it was getting thicker. Everyone was wandering around like headless chickens, totally lost and unable to find a way out.Â
The mood was getting tense. Everyone’s nerves were fraying, and tempers were starting to flare.Â
Once most of the crowd had cleared out, Chloe shot Mindy a look.Â
Mindy nodded, let a flame spark in her palm, and hurled it right into the crack where the mutant beetles had crawled inÂ
Renee started scooping up the mutant beetles the powered humans had taken down carlier. Each one was about the size of a fist.Â
William walked over, looking puzzled. “Captain Yates, what are you collecting those for?‘ he askedÂ
“Making poison. Want some? Chloe suddenly paused, bent down, and looked up at him.Â
William seemed to realize something and shook his head vigorously “Yeah, no thanks”Â
Chloe chuckled, picked up a mutant beetle about the size of her palm ‘Captain York, take a look at this beetle,” she saidÂ
William leaned in for a closer look. “The front half has horns, just like a beetle, but the back half kind of looks like a cicada, especially the tail”Â

William was a country boy. He’d seen cicadas before. His eyes suddenly went wide.Â
He pointed at the mutant beetle, sounding stunned. “Wait, you’re telling me we can actually eat this thing?”Â

Chloe just shrugged and squeezed the beetle’s tail. “Everything here is loaded with protein. It’ll help keep you strong.”Â
Before Chloe could finish, William spun around and hurriedly dragged the space–powered human over.Â
“How much room do you have left in your space? Collect as many as you can. Just keep it quiet so nobody else catches on,” William urged.Â
Finding something edible in this hellhole was like striking gold.Â
“Captain Yates, you’ve saved Bluehaven Base yet again,” William said, grateful.Â
He looked embarrassed as he continued, “Honestly, there’s nothing left around Bluehaven Base. That hailstorm killed off most people, and now everyone’s starving.”Â
Chloe was surprised. “Didn’t you guys get some food from us a while back? Wasn’t that enough?” she asked. She paused for a second, and then it clicked.Â
After all, Bluehaven Base was under military control now. Those hard–headed soldiers would never just sit back and let their people starve. They probably handed out more bread again.Â
But hey, whatever happens at their base was their business, and Chloe wasn’t about to butt in.Â
“How many people are left at your base?” Chloe asked.Â
William stiffened at the question, his expression turning grim.Â
“Less than 30 thousand,” he replied quietly.Â
She exclaimed, “What?”Â
Even Frank’s eyes went wide in disbelief, and everyone in Blaze Squad froze and stared at William.Â
Just a few months ago, when they left, Bluehaven Base had nearly a million people.Â
Emily covered her mouth in shock. “Oh my god, what on earth did you guys go through?” she blurted out.Â
This really hit home how much that hailstorm changed everything for humanity.Â
But all those disasters, zombies, mutant beasts, and plants were just the start of the apocalypse. As time went on, the weather just got nastier, and disasters kept piling up.Â
Lucky for them, Chloe was an ice–powered human Without her, they’d all be dead by now.Â
William took a deep breath and said, “Alright, let’s not talk about the depressing stufl. Let’s hurry up and pack our things.”Â
Just then, thanks to Mindy’s fire attack, the mutant beetles hiding under the crack started pouring our from another opening.Â
They swarmed out in a thick, writhing mass, enough to give anyone with trypophobia the creeps.Â
The air was suddenly filled with a mouthwatering, meaty aromaÂ

The scent drifted far and wide, and even the groups that had just left together stopped in their tracks.Â
Jaliyah licked her lips. “Ishaan, do you smell that? It smells just like chicken.”Â
Ishaan stopped in his tracks, sniffing the air eagerly, his face lighting up. “Yeah, I smell it too!”Â

The powered humans nearby all stopped as well, sniffing around, trying to figure out where the scent was coming from.Â
“Wow, that smells just like roast chicken legs. Who’s barbecuing out here?” someone asked.Â
“The smell’s coming from behind us, and it’s getting stronger by the second,” another person said.Â
“Seriously, who’s grilling chicken legs in this thick fog?” someone else chimed in.Â
Everyone was curious and wanted to head back for a look, but Jaliyah smacked her forehead.Â
“Ishaan, looks like only Chloe and those two squads in military gear stayed behind,” she said. She sniffed the air, trying not to drool.Â
Her group had a space–powered human, too, but their spiritual space was stuffed with bottled water, rations bars, and pasta. She was so tired of that stuff that she felt like throwing up.Â
Her eyes flashed with calculation. Clearly, she was already plotting something.Â
“With that smell drifting around, it’s definitely going to attract a ton of mutant creatures. What if something bad happens?” she said.Â
A middle–aged woman licked her parched lips and nodded hard. “That’s right. We’re all survivors here. We should stick together and help each other out. We can’t just leave any team behind.”Â
Everyone quickly caught on and agreed.Â
‘Yeah, that smell is incredible. They must have plenty of food, maybe even chicken legs. We should just trade some cores for a bit,” someone suggested.Â
The speaker got bumped by a burly guy, who said in a deep voice, “Trade? Why bother? We’re all survivors here.Â
If we help them drive off the mutant creatures attracted by the smell, they ought to share some food with us. That’s just how it should be,”Â
Everyone started chiming in, and soon enough, they were treating Chloe’s food as if it were theirs
