Chapter 255Â
It was Hector’s infuriating face.Â
“Hey, gorgeous, good morning,” Hector greeted with a grin.Â
Chloe was startled and glanced at the ground nearby. All the animal traps were gone.Â
Her voice was icy. “You weren’t following me?”Â

Hector quickly waved his hands. “See? We’re just fated to run into each other. I was just looking for a place to crash last night, and boom, there you are again.”Â
Chloe couldn’t help but glance at Noah. He still looked as aloof and unreadable as ever, not a hint of emotion on his face.Â
“Whatever, suit yourselves,” Chloe said coolly.Â
With a flick of her wrist, all the tents vanished into her spiritual space, and she turned to go.Â
Noah finally spoke up. “Hey, hold on a second.”Â
“I really need that level–six mutagenic herb. Any chance you’d sell it to me? Just tell me what you want in exchange,” he said.Â
Chloe said, “Sorry, I need it just as much.”Â
She turned and walked off, not looking back for a second.Â
‘Running into him twice in one day? What rotten luck,‘ Chloe thought.Â
“Hey, can’t we just talk it out? Why so frosty? Seriously, you two are made for each other with those icy attitudes,” Hector said.Â
Watching Chloe walk off, Hector pulled a long face.Â
“No level–six mutagenic herb, and you think you can ditch that engagement?” he asked.Â
Noah just shrugged. “Let’s go.”Â

Hector kept yapping behind him. “Why don’t we just snatch her?”Â
Blitz, the mutant cheetah trailing behind, perked up and nodded eagerly.Â
‘Now that’s a good idea, Blitz thought.Â
But his master wasn’t having it.Â
“Hey, Blitz seems pretty chummy with her. They look like old friends. Don’t tell me you’ve got some old romantic entanglement with her?” Hector teased.Â
“Oh, and didn’t you lose half a year of your memory? Maybe Blitz met her during that missing time,” Hector added.Â
Noah’s eyes clouded over, his gaze shifting to Blitz.Â
Blitz’s big head bobbed up and down like crazy.Â
‘Yeah, finally that idiot said something useful,‘ Blitz thought.Â

Noah didn’t say a word, but his aura kept fluctuating, as if he was struggling with something deep inside.Â

Hector slapped a hand over his mouth, his face full of shock and disbelief. He couldn’t believe he’d actually guessed right.Â
He threw an arm around Blitz, with all the nosiness of a gossip columnist. “Come on, spill! What’s really going on between those two?Â
“Okay, if I guess right, you nod. If I’m wrong, you shake your head.”Â
The mutant cheetah nodded.Â
“So, was that pretty girl ever crushing on your master?” Hector asked.Â
Blitz shook his head.Â
“Wait, so she wasn’t? Don’t tell me your master was the one chasing after her?” Hector pressed, incredulous.Â
Noah was known for his icy demeanor and never let women get close to him. No way he’d ever go after someone first.Â
But just as Hector was about to ask something else, Blitz actually nodded.Â
‘It actually nodded?‘ Hector thought, stunned.Â
He exaggeratedly slapped a hand over his mouth, like he’d just dug up a massive piece of gossip. His face twisted with excitement.Â
“So they used to be a couple?” Hector asked, barely able to contain himself.Â
Blitz shook his head.Â
Hector rubbed his chin with his thumb and forefinger. “Not a couple?”Â
“Wait, don’t tell me Noah tried to win her over and totally failed?” Hector blurted out.Â
The mutant cheetah nodded.Â
The silence hung for a few seconds before Hector exploded with laughter.Â
“Noah, so even you get shot down! No wonder that pretty girl acts so cold toward you. She just wasn’t interested,” HectorÂ
cackled.Â
“Maybe she’s got a thing for me instead?” Hector teased, wiggling his eyebrows.Â
Blitz slapped him away with a look of disgust, knocking Hector flat on the ground.Â
“Hey, just talk, why you gotta hit me?” Hector complained, picking himself up.Â
“Let’s go,” Noah said.Â
Noah walked ahead, his mind spinning from all the gossip he’d just overheard. He couldn’t shake the memory of Chloe’s icy stare the moment she first saw him.Â
‘Did something really go down between us?Â
‘Or maybe she just never liked me at all?‘ he thought.Â
Whenever he pictured that heartbreakingly beautiful face in the darkness, his heart couldn’t help but race.Â
‘Maybe she truly doesn’t care about me, Noah thought, feeling emptiness settle deep inside.Â
“Let’s go see a doctor,” Noah said out of nowhere.Â

“Huh? What for?” Hector asked, totally confused.Â
Noah’s sudden comment left Hector baffled.Â
“Don’t you remember? I used to be a surgeon,” Hector reminded him.Â
He immediately started checking Noah over, nervous that he might be hurt.Â
“Oh, right,” Noah said.Â
“Where are you hurt?” Hector asked, still worried.Â
Noah checked his pulse, his expression icy. “My heartbeat feels weird.”Â
Hector blinked, then asked hesitantly, “Did it start after you saw that pretty girl?”Â
“Yeah,” Noah replied.Â

Hector suddenly jumped up, eyes wide. “Damn, you’re actually catching feelings! Even the ancient iron tree finally blooms. Hell must’ve frozen over!Â
“No way, I gotta mark this down. I’m witnessing a miracle! When we get back to Ebony Base, this’ll be my brag for a wholeÂ
year.Â
“And Alfred? If he finds out you actually like a girl, he’ll probably live another twenty years.Â
“Especially since she’s totally not into you. Man, this is next–level drama—”Â
“Are you coming or not?” Noah’s voice was icy, the chill practically pouring off him.Â
Hector shivered. “Yeah, let’s get moving. We need to track down that mutagenic herb, settle things with the Linville family, and finally get you out of that engagement.”Â
Noah’s family controlled a huge business empire. When he was a kid, his stepmother sent people to kidnap him. He nearly died. But the Linville family just happened to be passing by and ended up saving his life.Â
They didn’t ask for any reward, just wanted their girl to marry him and tie the families together. That was enough for AlfredÂ
to agree.Â
Alfred was the kind of guy who always kept his word.Â
Now, with a top military commander popping up in the Linville family, they swapped the engagement to his daughter.Â
Rumor had it she was a spoiled, headstrong heiress.Â
The Linville family knew Noah wanted out of the engagement, so they made outrageous demands–either hand over half of Ebony Base’s supplies, or cough up a level–six mutagenic herb.Â
Chloe kept running, her powers mostly restored after a night of rest and soaking up those cores.Â
Looking at the ruins stretching out before her, she couldn’t help but sigh.Â
‘Man, this really is the apocalypse, Chloe thought, her heart sinking.Â
She grabbed a mask and a baseball cap from her spiritual space and put them on, just to keep a low profile.Â
Just as she finished, a group of about twenty people rode past on large horses, making their way down the rough road.Â
Everyone was dressed in retro outfits, like ancient men.Â

“Hey, you! Stop right there!” a gentle, feminine voice called out. Chloe turned around, her eyes narrowing.Â
Up front, two people were riding together on one horse–a man and a woman.Â

The man was tall and built like a tank, his face fierce and intimidating, while the woman nestled up against him, looking soft and almost boneless as she leaned in.Â
She looked pale and frail, licking her lips desperately like she was dying of thirst.Â
When she glanced at Chloe, her eyes were dripping with disdain.Â
“It’s blazing hot out here, like a hundred degrees, and this person is wrapped up head to toe? That’s gotta be suspicious,” she commented.Â
As she spoke, her dainty hand reached out to stroke the man’s chest. “Honey, I’m starving,” she whined.Â
The man smacked the woman’s ass hard and burst out laughing.Â
“Alright, I’ll have someone take care of her and feed her to you, my little darling,” he said with a wicked grin.Â
The woman squirmed her hips, her voice syrupy and flirtatious. “Oh, you’re so bad.”Â
Watching this nauseating display, Chloe felt like she might throw up last night’s dinner.Â
