- Chapter 22 Looks FamiliarÂ
“That’s us!” Helena jumped to her feet.Â
Wesley helped her stand as the couple waited anxiously.Â
The doctor approached them, pulled down his mask, and smiled. “Good news. The surgery was successful!”Â
Helena let out a deep breath as tears spilled down her cheeks. She was so overwhelmed she nearly dropped to her knees. “Thank you, doctor! Thank you for saving my son!”Â
The doctor quickly steadied her. “Please, there’s no need for that. We’re just doing our job.” He added with a more serious tone, “The patient is very fragile right now, both physically and emotionally. He needs proper rest and can’t handle any additionalÂ
stress.”Â
“We understand completely. Thank you so much.” Helena and Wesley nodded repeatedly, their hearts still bursting with relief.Â
Shortly after, the medical staff wheeled Kenneth out of the operating room to a private VIP suite.Â
Back in the hospital room, Helena stared at Kenneth’s pale, gauntÂ
face and felt her heart twist with pain. She leaned against herÂ
husband’s shoulder, sobbing quietly.Â

“It’s all my fault! I didn’t give Kenneth a healthy body. I didn’t take good enough care of him. Everything is my fault!”Â
“Don’t say that. How could this possibly be your fault?” WesleyÂ
gently patted her shoulder. “We should focus on finding a caregiver to stay with Kenneth and look after him now.”Â
They couldn’t just abandon their work responsibilities at theÂ
company.Â
Helena nodded and immediately called her assistant over. “Find me a professional caregiver. I don’t care about the salary. Just make sure they can take good care of Kenneth.”Â
“Yes, ma’am,” the assistant replied, getting right to work.Â
As soon as the job opening was posted, people rushed to apply,Â
attracted by the generous compensation package.Â
But Helena was particularly concerned about Kenneth’s conditionÂ
and couldn’t find the right fit despite interviewing candidate afterÂ
candidate.Â
Then one day, Kenneth finally regained consciousness. Wesley gripped his son’s wrist tightly, his voice trembling with excitement. “Kenneth, you’re awake?”Â

Kenneth opened his eyes groggily, his mind foggy and his throatÂ
painfully dry. The sharp smell of disinfectant in the hospital roomÂ
made him wince. “Dad,” he said, his voice hoarse.Â
“Here, drink some water.” Wesley quickly offered him a glass ofÂ
warm water before explaining, “The doctors operated on you, Kenneth. You’re going to be fine now!”Â
Kenneth nodded weakly.Â
So I’m still alive…Â
When the attack happened, he truly thought he was dying.Â
“Where’s Mom?” he asked, his voice barely audible.Â
“She’s interviewing caregivers for you,” Wesley replied withÂ
a small smile. “You’re still weak after the surgery. You needÂ
someone to look after you properly.”Â
Kenneth frowned slightly. After what happened with Victoria andÂ
Eleanor, he wasn’t keen on having strangers get close to himÂ
again.Â
Just as Kenneth was lost in thought, Helena walked into theÂ
hospital room with excitement on her face. “Kenneth, you’reÂ
awake!”Â

A young woman followed behind her, bringing a familiar fruityÂ
scent that helped mask the sharp smell of disinfectant that filledÂ
the room.Â
Kenneth called out “Mom” first, then glanced at the young woman. His eyes widened in disbelief.Â
It’s her?Â
His stare must have been too obvious because Helena quicklyÂ
jumped in with introductions. “Kenneth, this is the caregiver I hiredÂ
for you. Her name is Marianne Howard, and she’ll be looking afterÂ
your daily needs from now on.”Â
Kenneth froze, never expecting to meet her again like this.Â
Marianne seemed surprised too, but quickly offered a warm smile.Â
“Please, just call me Marianne. If you need anything at all, don’tÂ
hesitate to ask.”Â
“Sure,” Kenneth replied, completely forgetting his initial plan toÂ
refuse a caregiver.Â
Faced with Marianne’s bright smile, he felt his cheeks grow warmÂ
and awkwardly looked away.Â
Wesley and Helena noticed Kenneth’s reaction and became even more welcoming, gesturing to Marianne. “Well, Marianne, today isÂ

officially your first day. We’re trusting you with our son.”Â

“Okay.” Marianne nodded gently, not wanting to disappoint them. She immediately went to the bathroom and returned with a basinÂ
of warm water.Â
After soaking a towel and wringing it out, she moved closer toÂ
Kenneth.Â
Kenneth froze as she approached with the damp cloth, his eyes fixed on the young woman before him, his Adam’s apple bobbing involuntarily.Â
Is this really happening? Or am I hallucinating from theÂ
medication?Â
Marianne wasn’t overthinking things. She simply focused onÂ
gently wiping Kenneth’s face, with the warm towel.Â
Noticing how tense he felt, she asked with concern, “Are youÂ
uncomfortable somewhere?”Â
“N–no.” Kenneth blinked rapidly, avoiding her gaze.Â
His hands, tightly clenched beneath the blanket, betrayed hisÂ
nervousness. For the first time, he felt like his heart was a littleÂ
rabbit, jumping all over the place!Â

Suddenly, a phone vibrated. Kenneth glanced over at Wesley andÂ
Helena standing nearby.Â
Wesley checked his phone and calmly declined the call, whileÂ
Helena took out her own phone and switched it to silent.Â
Seeing this, Kenneth knew they were busy people who had madeÂ
time to be with him. “Mom, Dad,” he said gently, “if you have workÂ
to do, don’t let me keep you.”Â
The whole situation had caught Wesley and Helena off guard.Â
They truly hadn’t planned their work schedule well, but leavingÂ
Kenneth alone in his hospital bed just wasn’t an option.Â
They exchanged a glance before both shook their heads.Â
“Kenneth, we’re staying right here with you. We’re not goingÂ
anywhere.”Â
“Really, there’s no need,” Kenneth said with a resigned smile.Â
“Didn’t you already hire a caretaker for me?”Â
Catching his subtle hint, Marianne stepped forward and promised,Â
“Don’t worry, Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell. I’ll take excellent care of yourÂ
son.”Â
Wesley and Helena exchanged another look but still showed noÂ
signs of leaving.Â

Seeing their stubbornness, Kenneth sighed and decided to play the gullt card. “I guess I really am a burden to you both. Because of my illness, you can’t even do your jobs properly…”Â
“Kenneth, don’t say that!” Helena couldn’t bear to hear this and quickly stood up. “How could you ever be a burden to us?”Â
Wesley’s face showed clear disapproval. “Son, our work isn’t nearly as important as you are!”Â
Kenneth nodded gently. “I know that. But I don’t want to interfereÂ
with your work, and isn’t that why you hired a caretaker in the firstÂ
place? So someone could look after me when you’re not here?”Â
He sighed, “So what are you worried about?”Â
With that question hanging in the air, Wesley and Helena had no counter–argument. Finally, they reluctantly agreed to leave.Â
“Are you thirsty?” Marianne asked after showing Wesley and Helena out, returning with a glass of water for Kenneth.Â
“A little,” Kenneth replied, trying to reach for it, but she gently pressed his hand down.Â
Marianne thoughtfully inserted a straw into the glass and held it to his lips. “You just had surgery. Don’t move around too much. JustÂ
drink like this.”Â

Kenneth felt a wave of surprise. Even Eleanor and Victoria hadÂ
never been this attentive with him.Â
He took the straw between his lips, and the cool water soothed his parched throat immediately.Â
But with Marianne standing so close, he couldn’t focus on simply drinking. Each swallow felt awkward and self–conscious.Â
“What’s wrong? Are you embarrassed?” Marianne noticed his discomfort and smirked faintly.Â
Kenneth froze, feeling as if she’d uncovered some secretÂ
vulnerability. His face flushed with embarrassment.Â
Before he could dwell on it, Marianne reassured him kindly.Â
“You don’t need to feel shy. Getting sick is perfectly normal, andÂ
patients deserve to be taken care of.Â
“Besides, I’m a professional caregiver. You don’t have to feelÂ
uncomfortable around me.”Â
Kenneth felt both relief and a strange heaviness in his chest at herÂ
words.Â
Am I just another patient to her, nothing more?Â
