Chloe nodded, and just then, the sound of heavy breathing echoed from the stairwell. A boy dashed in, swift as the wind. 

His cheeks were bright red, and he clutched his stomach, panting heavily. 

‘Ms. Yates, you have a call,” he said. 

That was Todd. He had always been fascinated by networks and electronics, and when his powers awakened, they turned out to be related to technology and circuits, too. 

The point system and all the advanced tech in Blaze Haven were inventions of this young genius. 

He was also Yvonne’s younger brother. 

Who’s calling?” Chloe asked. 

It’s Ebony Base,” Todd replied. 

Chloe’s expression changed when she heard it was Ebony Base, mixed feelings surging. 

Did they say anything?” she asked. 

The base chief from Ebony Base wants a word with you. He said there’s a locust swarm coming, and we should be prepared, Todd said. 

Alright. Just tell him I’m swamped right now,” Chloe replied. 

Todd lingered. “He also said he’s got several military helicopters ready for you… But if you don’t answer, it’s no big deal,” he added. 

Before Todd could finish, Chloe was gone in a gust of wind–she appeared in the comms room in a flash. 

She rushed into the comms room and saw the call from Ebony Base still connected on the desk. She grabbed the phone. 

‘Hello. This is Chloe,‘ she said. 

“Hello?” Chloe answered. 

There was a deep breath, then a long silence before the person on the other end of the line finally spoke, “Chloe, it’s nie 

That long–missed, magnetic voice brushed her ear, and her heart did a little somersault. 

“Okay,” she murmured. 

At Ebony Base, Noah kept a straight face as he held the phone, but the way his fingers gripped it tightly totally betrayed his 

nerves.

Noah had never chased after a girl before, so for a moment, he just blanked out, not knowing what to say.

Standing next to him were two men, an old man with a grizzled beard, and Hector, a tall guy who was about six feet tall. 

Alfred watched his grandson, Noah, fumbling like a fool. He was so anxious that he was practically scratching his head. He wished he could yank Noah by the ear and give him a good scolding. 

Alfred gritted his teeth, muttering under his breath, “Come on, you idiot. Just say you miss her.” 

But Noah just stood there like a statue, not saying a word. 

Alfred was about to blow a fuse. 

Hector piped up, “Mr. Fletcher, are you trying to kill Noah? If you make him say something that cringe, he’d rather drop dead right here.” 

Alfred shot him a death glare. “Then what do you want me to do? This brat’s gonna be the death of me.” 

As he spoke, Alfred gave Noah a hard pinch right in the waist. 

“Listen, kiddo. Chloe’s the only one I want as my granddaughter–in–law. If someone else wins her over, you can hit the road for good,” Alfred said. 

He gave his final ultimatum. 

Hector was laughing so hard he nearly fell over, then quietly leaned in and whispered under his breath to Noah. 

Tell her about the helicopters already,” Hector urged. 

Noah hesitated, stumbling over his words. “Uh, the military choppers you wanted. They’re ready now. Just let me know when you need them, and I’ll deliver them to you.” 

As Noah spoke, Alfred and Hector were all ears, practically glued to the phone, dying to hear Chloe’s reply. 

‘I see. You don’t need to come in person. Just send a few pilots and a space–powered human, and I’ll get some supplies ready for you in exchange for the helicopters,” Chloe said. 

“That’s not necessary. Ebony Base still has plenty of supplies,” Noah replied. 

Chloe paused, a little surprised. “That’s not how it works. I need to give you something for the helicopters, otherwise I can’t accept them.” 

“Alright then,” Noah replied. 

After exchanging a few stiff words, Chloe hung up, clutching her chest and exhaling hard, trying to calm herself down. 

Meanwhile, as soon as Noah hung up, Alfred was so mad that he gave Noah a smack upside the head. 

“You blockhead, why are you so awkward? Forget the girl. Even I can’t tell you’re trying to woo her, Alfred grumbled, 

Hector doubled over laughing, then slapped Noah on the shoulder. “Noah, if you really can’t do it, should I step in and win her for you?” 

Alfred was so mad his beard bristled, and he gave Hector a solid smack upside the head. 

“Bullshit! You want to chase after her? Then what’s my grandson supposed to do?” Alfred snapped.

Hector rubbed his sore head, looking totally wronged. “Hey, I was just trying to help.”

Alfred jabbed a finger at Noah, who was still standing there like a statue. “Hurry up and call my future granddaughter–in–law again!” 

Noah looked conflicted. “But… Won’t she get annoyed if I keep calling?” 

Alfred shoved Noah aside and snatched up the phone, calling Chloe right back. 

“If you don’t do it, I will,” he said. 

Chloe was about to head out, already halfway through the door, when the phone started ringing again. 

She leaned in to check, and it was another call from Ebony Base. 

She looked around for someone else to answer, but the place was empty. 

“Hello?” Chloe answered. 

When Alfred heard Chloe’s voice, he was so happy that he grinned from ear to ear. 

“Hello, my dear granddaughter–in–law…” Alfred blurted out. 

But as soon as Alfred realized what he’d said, he clapped a hand over his mouth, cutting himself off. 

‘Oh, no. Chloe, it’s been ages since I last saw you. I’ve missed you like crazy,” Alfred said. 

As Alfred spoke, Noah instinctively leaned in, hoping to hear Chloe’s voice, but Alfred shot him a fierce glare. 

When Chloe realized it was Emery, she breathed a quiet sigh of relief. 

‘Oh, it’s you, Mr. Fletcher. I’ve missed you, too. I’ll make sure to visit you when I have time,” Chloe said. 

‘Alright. Great. Listen. Noah also misses you a lot, too, but he’s too embarrassed to admit it…” Alfred continued. 

Chloe’s face turned bright red, and she was at a loss for words. Suddenly, she heard someone snatch the phone on the other end, followed by a loud beep as the call abruptly ended. 

She took a deep breath, finally feeling relieved. 

She made a quick escape, almost running out the door. 

On the other end, Alfred was fuming, his beard bristling. “What are you doing? I was still talking to my future granddaughter–in–law. Why’d you cut me off like that?” 

Noah’s face was grim. “With you acting like this… I just can’t…” 

For once, he was at a total loss for words. 

‘Can’t what? What? You don’t like her or something?” Emery shot back. 

“No, I… It’s not that…” Noah stammered. 

“If you like someone, you gotta make a move! Stop dragging your feet. If you keep acting like a wimp, when am I ever gonna get my granddaughter–in–law?” Alfred snapped.

Once he had left, Alfred started plotting again. “Noah, when the time comes, you should fly the helicopter over to Blaze Haven yourself. Chloe probably can’t fly a helicopter, right?” 

He rubbed his chin, looking sly as a fox, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. 

Good thing you know how to fly. Then you can teach her yourself,” Alfred added.
