Chapter 237 

Ash still didn’t believe what Dorothy had said. 

But Dorothy insisted, practically shoving the bracelet into Ash’s hand and urging her to leave quickly.

Once in the car, Ash still held the bracelet Dorothy had given her, her mind wandering. She wasn’t sure what she was thinking, lost in her thoughts. 

Calvert drove with one hand on the wheel, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye. “What did she say to you?” 

“Nothing. By the way, has something been going on with Dorothy? Do you know anything about it?” Ash asked, her gaze shifting lazily to him, her fingers idly running over the bracelet. 

His expression remained neutral, and his voice was calm. “No, I don’t know anything.” 

“I just came back with you, and I’ve been away the past few days, Calvert said, keeping his speed slow, responding casually. 

Ash pondered momentarily, her gaze lingering on him before slowly saying. “Why were you angry today?” 

Calvert fell silent. After a long pause, his cold voice broke the silence. “I wasn’t.” 

“You’re lying.” Ash didn’t hesitate to call him out. It was obvious he was upset. She wasn’t stupid–she could tell. 

The atmosphere in the car grew tense and still. 

Neither of them spoke for a long time. 

“You’re being so contradictory–it’s so hypocritical, so insincere,” Ash commented, throwing out three biting criticisms. 

Calvert pulled the car over to the side of the road and turned his head to look at her. “Well? What else? What’s your next opinion?” 

“Alright, if you want to hear more, you must pay for it. You think I’m just handing out free reviews? Send me 15 dollars first, then let’s see if you’re worthy,” Ash said, always ready with a sharp tongue. 

Without hesitation, he grabbed his phone and transferred three thousand dollars. His narrow eyes narrowed as he looked at Ash. “Can you talk now?” 

Ash glanced at the recent transfer and tapped to accept the payment without a second thought, flashing a charming, almost ingratiating smile. “Got it? Thank you, Calvert!” 

“So, would you prefer to hear something pleasant? Or something flattering?” Ash’s attitude instantly shifted at the sight of the money, her tone sweet and calculated. 

She paused, her piercing gaze sweeping around. “Or, would you prefer I improvise? Either way, I’ll follow your lead, Calvert.” 

Seeing her shift in attitude, the air around Calvert lightened just a little. “Ash, is all it takes to get this attitude from you just three thousand dollars?” 

Ash’s eyes gleamed. ‘Oh, yes. Look at me, I’m a great deal, aren’t I? Just three thousand dollars, and you get this kind of 

service. 

She couldn’t help but add, “It’s a solid investment.” 

He turned his head, staring out the window as he muttered, ‘Greedy‘

“So, are you feeling better now?” Ash tilted her body toward him, leaning in with a teasing grin. “Or are you still angry?” 

She cocked her head, waiting for his response. “Mr. Snider, surely the great CEO of the Snider Group doesn’t have such a short temper, does he? What are you angry about?” 

Calvert frowned slightly, his gaze hardening. “I’m not angry.” 

“Ah.” Ash felt a wave of exhaustion. This man was impossible to calm. She had tried everything, but he was still holding onto his anger. 

The tables turned instantly–now, Ash was the one fuming. 

“Take me home.” 

Calvert’s lips twitched, but the tension in the car was palpable. He could feel the shift in her mood, but in the end, he said nothing. 

When they reached the Turner family, Calvert stepped out of the car and followed Ash. “Why do you always want me to be alone with Jade?” 

“Hmm?” Ash stopped a few feet away, the dimming light making it hard to see his expression. 

She was caught off guard by his sudden question. “What do you mean? I don’t quite understand. When did I ever ask you to be alone with Jade?” 

Calvert’s expression darkened instantly, his voice calm and detached. “Nothing. Just go inside.” 

“Fine, I’ll go inside,” Ash said reluctantly. She couldn’t understand Calvert’s constantly shifting moods. 

But Ash was past the point of caring now. She had already been patient, doing her best to soothe him, but Calvert still refused to give an inch. His moods remained as unpredictable as ever, shifting from cold to distant without explanation. 

Calvert watched Ash walk away, standing still for an eternity before finally getting back in the car and driving off. 

“Ash, you’re back!” Brooke’s face lit up when she spotted Ash step through the door. “You look thinner–did you lose weight?” 

Ash, not in the best mood, forced a smile. “No, not at all. I’ve probably gained a few pounds.” 

“You’ve lost weight, haven’t you? Though you look a little pale. How’s Sofia? Is she still doing well?” Brooke asked, still planning to visit Sofia, but she knew it might not be the best time to show up unannounced.” 

Ash didn’t know how to explain. Her thoughts were still tangled with images of Calvert and their strange tension. 

“What’s wrong? You seem upset.” Brooke seemed to notice Ash’s shift in mood immediately. “Did Calvert drop you off? Why didn’t he come in? Did you two fight?” 

Ash thought, ‘Even Brooke can tell something’s wrong, yet that damn Calvert doesn’t notice a thing! 

The thought made Ash feel even more frustrated. She wished she’d stood her ground with him earlier instead of walking 

away. 

She shook her head, not eager to talk about it. Bringing it up wouldn’t solve anything and would only worry Brooke, 

Ash smiled and linked arms with Brooke. “No, it’s just traveling back and forth these past few days. I’m a little tired. I was thinking about that apple pie you make.”

“I had once while I was away, but it doesn’t compare to yours. Brooke, can you make some today?” Ash pouted playfully, giving Brooke’s arm a gentle tug. 

Brooke’s heart softened as she looked at Ash. “Of course, I’ll make it for you. If you love it that much, I’ll make it for you 

forever.” 

That’s easier than picking stars from the sky,” Ash joked, the request so simple that Brooke had no trouble agreeing. 

By the way, since you’ve been away, you probably haven’t heard this,” Brooke said, suddenly recalling something as she walked toward the kitchen. 

Ash, following Brooke, paused in her steps, a puzzled look crossing her face. “What’s going on?” 

Brooke hesitated, clearly reluctant to bring it up. After a long silence, she finally spoke. “It’s about the Moreno family. Lorelei had an accident. A car crash, just a couple of days ago. She’s still in the hospital.” 

A car accident?” Ash was taken aback. “I had no idea.” 

I just wanted to let you know, Dexter sent money to help. Things haven’t been easy between you and them, but they’ve given you a place to stay all these years. Please don’t be upset with us for stepping in.”
