Aria pov 

“Yes. I, left Ravenwood, and built a new life. A safe life for 

my son.” 

“And during this time, did your parents attempt to contact you?” 

“No.” I met the judge’s eyes. “Not once in those years. No calls, no emails, no attempts to find me or see if I was okay. Complete silence until” I paused. “Until they saw the news of my return to Ravenwood with Noah.” 

“And then?” 

“Then suddenly they wanted a relationship.” I couldn’t keep the bitterness from my voice. “Not because they cared about Noah. But because they saw an opportunity. Access to Damien through their grandson. A way to profit from my life again.” 

“Thank you, Ms. Monroe.” Jessica returned to her seat. “Your witness, Mr. Sterling” 

Sterling approached, all false sympathy. “Ms. Monroe, isn’t it true that you harbored resentment toward your parents for arranging your first marriage?” 

“Yes.” I wouldn’t lie. “I resented being treated like property.” 

“And isn’t it possible that this resentment is coloring your judgment? That you’re denying them access to Noah as revenge?” 

“No.” I looked directly at my father. “I’m protecting my son from the same toxic environment I grew up in. From people who see children as investments rather than individuals. From a family that values money and reputation over love.” 

“That’s quite an accusation.” Sterling’s voice sharpened. 

“It’s the truth.” I didn’t flinch. “My parents have never asked about Noah’s interests, his personality, what makes him happy. They don’t know his favorite color or food or that he’s obsessed with dinosaurs. They don’t know him because they’ve never cared to know him. And I won’t expose my son to that kind of conditional love.” 

“Your Honor, Ms. Monroe is clearly biased” Sterling started. 

“As is her right.” Judge Morrison cut him off. “She’s the child’s mother. Her testimony regarding her parents‘ behavior is relevant. Do you have actual evidence to contradict her claims, Mr. Sterling? Phone records showing attempted contact? Gifts sent?

Sterling’s silence was damning. “I thought not. The judge made a note. “Ms. Jessica, do you have additional witnesses?” 

“Yes, Your Honor: Jessica stood. “We’d like to call Dr. Sarah Peterson, Noah’s pediatrician and child psychologist.” 

Dr. Peterson was sworn in, professional and calm. 

“Dr. Peterson, how long have you known Noah Blackwood?” 

“Since he was one year old. I’ve been his pediatrician for his entire life, and I’ve also worked with him and Ms. Monroe on developmental concerns.” 

“And in your professional opinion, what kind of mother is Ms. Monroe?” 

“Exceptional.” Dr. Peterson’s voice was warm. “She’s attentive, involved, prioritizes Noah’s emotional and physical wellbeing above everything else. She’s created a stable, loving environment for him.” 

“Have you ever met Noah’s maternal grandparents?” 

“No. In the years of treating Noah, they’ve never attended an appointment, never called to check on him, never been mentioned by Noah himself.” She paused. “Which is unusual. Most children talk about their extended family. Noah has never mentioned having grandparents.” 

“And if the court were to grant visitation rights, what would be your professional opinion on the impact?” 

Dr. Peterson’s expression turned serious. “Introducing strangers into a child’s life- especially strangers claiming familial rights without having built a relationship–can be deeply confusing and distressing. Noah is a sensitive, intelligent child who’s recently undergone significant changes with his father entering his life. Adding more unknowns could be detrimental to his emotional stability.” 

“Thank you, Doctor.” Jessica returned to her seat. 

Sterling’s cross–examination was brief and ineffective. He couldn’t shake Dr. 

Peterson’s testimony or her professional opinion. 

Next came Noah’s preschool teacher, then Olivia, then–surprisingly–Lucas, who testified about what he’d witnessed of my parenting and my parents‘ complete absence from Noah’s life.

Finally, Damien took the stand. “Mr. Blackwood,” Jessica began. “You’re Noah’s father, 

correct?” 

“Yes.” His voice was firm. “Biologically and in every way that matters.” 

“And you’re engaged to Ms. Monroe?” 

“Yes. We’re getting married next month.” 

“Can you describe the Monroe family’s involvement with Noah since you entered his 

life?” 

“There hasn’t been any.” Damien’s jaw tightened. “They’ve never asked to meet him. Never sent gifts. Never called. The only contact was one hostile meeting where they insulted Aria and made it clear they saw Noah as a tool to access my money.” 

“And 

your opinion on their petition for visitation?” 

“It’s disgusting” The word came out harsh. “They’re not grandparents seeking a relationship. They’re opportunists seeking a payout. And I’ll do whatever it takes to protect my son from that.” 

Sterling tried to paint Damien as controlling, as turning me against my parents. But Damien’s calm, factual responses destroyed every implication. 

When all testimony was complete, the judge took a long moment reviewing her notes. “I’ve heard enough.” She looked at my parents directly. “Mr. and Mrs. Monroe, I find your petition to be entirely without merit. You’ve demonstrated no previous relationship with your grandson, no attempts to establish one, and frankly, no genuine interest in his wellbeing. This appears to be a transparent attempt to gain financial access to the Blackwood family fortune.” 

My father opened his mouth, but the judge held up a hand. “I’m not finished. The testimony provided by Ms. Monroe’s witnesses paints a clear picture of a loving, stable home environment that you’ve had no part in creating. More concerning is the testimony regarding your treatment of Ms. Monroe herself–the controlling behavior, the conditional love, the complete abandonment when she didn’t meet your expectations.” 

The judge’s voice turned hard. “I’m denying this petition in its entirety. Furthermore, I’m granting Ms. Monroe’s counter–petition for a restraining order. You are to have no contact with Noah Blackwood, Ms. Monroe, or Mr. Blackwood. No phone calls, no emails, no attempts to approach them in public. If you violate this order, you will face

criminal charges.” 

“This is ridiculous!” My father stood, face red. “That child is 

my 

blood” 

“That child,” the judge cut him off icily, “has a loving mother and father who have provided everything he needs. What he doesn’t need is a relationship with people who view him as a commodity. My ruling stands. This court is adjourned.” 

The gavel fell with finality. I sat frozen, not quite believing it was over. Damien’s hand found mine under the table, squeezing tight. 

“It’s done,” he murmured. “They can’t hurt you anymore.” 

Across the aisle, my parents were arguing with their lawyer in furious whispers. My father looked up, meeting my eyes, and the hatred there was palpable. “You’ll regret this,” he mouthed. 

I stood, squaring my shoulders, and walked over to them. Jessica tried to stop me, shook my head.

“Aria” my mother started, her voice breaking. 

“Don’t.” I cut her off. “Don’t pretend you care now. Don’t act like you wanted a relationship with Noah. We both know what this was really about.” 

“You’re ungrateful” my father started. 

“I’m ungrateful?” I laughed, the sound bitter. “For what? For being sold off in a business deal? For being abandoned when I didn’t live up to your standards? For being told I was worthless my entire childhood?” I leaned closer, voice dropping. “I regret exactly one thing about you. And that’s being born to people so incapable of love that they’d use their own grandchild as a pawn.” 

“We gave you everything” my mother tried. 

“You gave me nothing that mattered.” I straightened. “No love. No support. No acceptance. Just demands and criticisms and conditions. And I refuse to let you do the same thing to Noah.” I paused. “Goodbye, Charles. Goodbye, Eleanor. This is the last time we’ll speak.” 

I turned and walked away, Damien’s arm coming around me immediately. “You okay?” he asked quietly as we left the courtroom. 

“I am.” And surprisingly, I meant it. “I’m free of them. Finally, completely free.”

Outside the courthouse, we found Lucas and Olivia waiting. Olivia pulled me into a fierce hug. “You were amazing there,” she said. “So strong.” 

“We all were.” I looked at Lucas. “Thank you for testifying. You didn’t have to do that.” 

“Of course I did.” He squeezed my shoulder. “You’re family, Aria. And nobody messes with family.” 

Damien’s phone buzzed. He checked it, and his expression darkened. 

“What?” I asked. 

He showed me the screen. A text from an unknown number: “This isn’t over. You’ll pay for humiliating us. Both of you.” 

“My father?” I guessed. 

“Probably.” Damien forwarded it to Jessica. “But it doesn’t matter. The restraining order is in place. If he contacts us again, he goes to jail.” 

“He won’t risk it.” I took Damien’s hand. “He’s all bluster. He’s lost, and he knows it.” 

We walked to the car, and as we drove away from the courthouse, I felt something lift 

from 

my chest. A weight I’d been carrying my entire life. 

My parents were gone. Out of my life. Unable to hurt me or Noah ever again. 

“Aria?” Damien glanced over. “What are you thinking?” 

“That I’m happy.” I smiled, meaning it completely. “Genuinely, truly happy. My parents are out of my life. Vivian’s gone. Marcus is getting help. We have our wedding next month. And Damien” I reached over to take his hand. “We’re finally free. Free to just be happy without all the toxic people trying to tear us down.” 

“We are.” He brought my hand to his lips. “And Aria, I promise you–I’m going to make sure you stay this happy. Every single day for the rest of our lives.”
