Samuel went quiet. 

He could tell Nina was mocking him, and he had every reason to believe it. 

Nina smirked. “Cat got your tongue, Grandpa? Not in the mood to talk?” 

Samuel forced down his anger. “I’ll give you three days. If I don’t see any sincerity from you by then, you’ll be the one picking up everyone’s bodies-” 

Before he could even finish his threat, Nina hung up on him. 

Samuel’s anger exploded, and he smashed his phone to pieces. 

Behind him, Sarah saw Samuel lose his temper and gave a mocking laugh. 

Sarah thought, ‘After thinking he was dead for over a decade, I thought he’d be different. 

“Turns out, he’s still the same useless, short–tempered fool. With that pathetic skill set, he really thinks he can control my

Meanwhile, Nina slipped her phone into her pocket and turned to Ryan. “Let’s go. We need to save Zachary and the others first.” 

Scarlet was still holding on with acupuncture, even though the antidote hadn’t been developed yet. 

Scarlet’s condition wasn’t critical yet, so saving the Foster family came first. 

Felix immediately turned and went to get the car. 

Ryan and Nina followed him downstairs. 

As soon as they got downstairs, a fleet of black SUVS rolled up in perfect formation and stopped right at the villa’s entrance 

The men who stepped out were all dressed in black jackets, standing ramrod straight with a no–nonsense vibe.

Nina narrowed her eyes, then whipped out her phone and called Russell. “The Foster family’s been poisoned. Head to the hospital and help them out. I’ll catch up later.” 

At that moment, she was probably stuck here. 

Russell just gave a quick “Got it” and hung up. 

The guy in front, sporting gold–rimmed glasses, walked up to Nina and Ryan. 

He came right up to Nina, stuck out his hand, and said, “Hey, I’m Vihaan, and I’m- 

“Not interested in your name,” Nina interrupted him. 

Vihaan paused for a moment, then said, “Ms. Swanson, we’re here to bring Ruby in for questioning. 

Nina lowered her gaze, her voice cool and flat. “She’s not going anywhere with you.” 

‘Funny how nobody was around when things went down, but now that she’s back, everyone crawls out of the woodwork. Nina thought. ‘Do they think I’m some pushover?‘ 

Vihaan had long heard of Nina’s reputation. 

“This girl is full of hostility and defiance. Right in front of everyone, she doesn’t even bother to show me a shred of respect. Vihaan thought. 

Vihaan’s expression soured. “This is an order from HQ. I’m taking Ms. Ruby James in for questioning. Ms. Swanson, I expect your cooperation.” 

Scarlet made her way downstairs, leaning on a staff member for support. She bit her lip and said, “I’ll go with you.” 

Nina’s brows knitted together. “Not happening.” 

Vihaan barked, “Nina, do you even realize what happens when you go against orders?” 

Nina scoffed, her laugh icy. “What happens? What, you planning to kill me now?” 

Vihaan’s face darkened. “Don’t twist my words. When did I ever say I’d kill you? I’m here to take Ruby back for questioning, that’s it. Nina, you’re with us, too. 

“You know how long Ruby’s been missing, and Iris pretended to be her, screwing things up for everyone. She needs to answer for it.” 

Just as Nina was about to speak, someone darted over like a flash. “Why are you taking her back to the bureau? She’s given everything to your organization her whole life. 

“Now that she’s finally been rescued, doesn’t she have the right to choose where she wants to be?” 

Scarlet looked up suddenly, staring in shock at the man not far away. 

It was David. 

‘How many years has it been since we last saw each other?‘ Scarlet wondered. 

She’d honestly thought they’d never cross paths again in this lifetime. 

But at that moment, he was here.

Just like he did all those years ago, he stepped right in front of her without a moment’s hesitation. Vihaan frowned. “Step aside. This is law enforcement business. If you’re not involved, clear out now.”

Nina lifted her gaze, speaking slowly and coldly, “Felix, if anyone dares touch Scarlet, cripple their hand. Whatever happens, I’ll take responsibility.” 

“Yes, Felix answered, then stood guard in front of Scarlet, unmoving as a statue. 

Vihaan’s expression soured. 

Just then, a deep voice came through the earpiece in his left ear. “Stand down.” 

Vihaan shot Nina a look, clearly unwilling to back down. “I’ll make sure HQ hears about everything you pulled today.” 

Nina stayed calm. “I’ll be waiting.” 

After Vihaan and his crew left, Nina was about to have Felix get some people to lock down the place when she saw Scarlet start making her way toward David. 

David’s eyes filled with tears. He said softly, “Stay right there. This time, it’s my turn to run to you.” 

David ran over to Scarlet and wrapped her up in a tight hug. “I’m so sorry I was late.” 

Scarlet hugged him back, and she couldn’t hold back her feelings anymore, finally letting it all out. 

David didn’t say a word, just gently patted her back. 

Nina watched from a distance, her eyes growing a little misty.
