Chapter 5

Failing to convince Dad, Debra turned to me with a look of desperation in her eyes.

“Debbie, we grew up together. Please, you have to help me! I was once… I was your…

I looked at the familiar face I once knew, but my eyes held no pity.

I responded indifferently, “Debra, whatever bond we shared was long gone the moment you betrayed it. You knew exactly what

you were doing and never once considered showing mercy.”

Her face fell, and the plea in her eyes instantly morphed into anger.

Hatred seeped into her voice as she spat out, “Why? Why do you get everything so effortlessly, while I don’t? It’s all the things

you didn’t want, so why can’t I have them? I’m just-”

“You’re just a thief and an imposter,” I cut her off. “You took what didn’t belong to you, and now you think you’re justified?”

Debra’s face twisted in fury, and her emotions spiraled out of control as her voice became shrill and desperate.

“You’ve been pampered your whole life! You never needed to care about anything! But what about me? Why can’t I have what you

have?”

Dad watched her outburst and said seriously, “You don’t have the right to make demands. None of the things you’ve taken belong

to you. You have no claim to forgiveness.”

He then turned to the police officers, signaling to proceed with the legal process.

Debra’s face grew even paler, and her eyes shifted to Isaiah as if grasping her last straw. The Jouberts were just as influential, and

she knew that there might still be hope if Isaiah helped her.

“Isaiah!” she cried as she staggered toward him and grabbed his sleeve. “Isaiah, we’ve been together so long. You can’t let this

happen to me. You promised you’d help me!”

Isaiah avoided her gaze and pulled his arm away. It was clear he didn’t want to get involved.

Debra stared at him in disbelief. “You won’t help me? But… didn’t you say you’d always be there for me? Didn’t you say you loved

me?”

Isaiah couldn’t meet her eyes.

The room buzzed with whispers as people began to understand.

At the same time, Dad sneered softly and said, “Do you really think pleading with him will change anything? He never had any genuine feelings for you in this game.”

I looked at Isaiah, trying to understand what Dad meant.

Isaiah’s anxiety was evident now, and his face was pale and tense as sweat beaded on his forehead.

Dad’s gaze locked on him. His voice slow and deliberate, he continued sarcastically, “Mr. Joubert, care to explain yourself? Or would you like me to do it for you?”

The mockery in the way he emphasized “Mr. Joubert” was impossible to miss.

Isaiah’s face drained of color, and his lips were pressed tight under the mounting pressure.

I turned to Dad, bewildered. “What do you mean?”

Dad shot me a glance before answering, “Did you not wonder why the heir of the Joubert family couldn’t tell the difference

between the real Deborah and an imposter?”

I shook my head in confusion. “But we’ve never met. How would he know?”

Dad sighed reproachfully. “That’s because you’re naive. Isaiah is the heir of the Joubert family. Do you really think the true heir

would make such a mistake in recognizing his fiancée?”

I froze as the realization dawned on me in a flash. “Wait… You mean he isn’t…”

Dad gave a slight nod, his lips curling into a smile. “Looks like you’re not as foolish as I thought.”

Then, he turned to Isaiah. “Well then, Mr. Joubert, care to explain?”

Isaiah tried to act calm and insisted stubbornly, “I’m not lying. My name is Isaiah!”

As he held up his ID as proof, he added, “But I never said I was the one betrothed to Deborah.”

Debra gaped at him and screamed, “What do you mean? You lied to me?”

Isaiah retorted with a scoff, “That’s rich coming from you. At least my name is real. But what about you? Everything about you is

fake!”

The two instantly got into a heated argument, and their facades and any semblance of trust shattered as they began exposing

each other’s secrets.

Dad stood off to the side and watched with disdain.

I, too, finally learned the truth.
