Chapter 114 She Wanted Mommy 

After thinking it over, Emily reminded herself that Sophia was, after all, her daughter. There was no reason to be upset with a child. 

When she answered the call, she didn’t speak. She waited quietly for Sophia to say something first. 

Sophia, too, waited for Emily to speak. Silence stretched on at both ends of the line. 

In the end, it was Sophia who gave in. “Mommy.” 

She lowered her voice and called out softly, with a faint trace of coaxing in her tone. 

Emily responded coolly, “Mm.” 

Sophia asked carefully, “Mommy, can you come back and spend some time with me? Daddy and Nancy haven’t come home to be with me these past few days.” 

Hearing this, Emily guessed that Ethan and the others were probably tied up with Andrew’s mother’s situation, and that was why they had not returned home. Even so, she didn’t want to agree to Sophia’s request. 

“Isn’t Rebecca at Joy Gardens?” Emily asked.

Sophia sounded a little unhappy, her voice dull. “But Rebecca is just a maid. I have a daddy and I have a mommy. I just want my daddy, and mommy to be with me.”

Emily understood Sophia’s real thoughts perfectly well. Nancy couldn’t spare the time to come home and keep her company, so Sophia had settled for Emily instead. 

“I have to work late. I won’t be back tonight…” 

Before Emily could finish refusing, Sophia began to cry on the other end of the line. “Mommy,” she said, her voice thick with tears, “I barely ate anything today. I don’t like the dinner Rebecca made. I want to eat what you make. Just what you 

make.” 

In that instant, Emily’s heart tightened despite herself. She closed her eyes briefly, her tone softening without her noticing. “Be good. Don’t cry yet. Let Mommy finish what she’s doing, and I’ll come back, all right?” 

The line went quiet for a few seconds. Sophia’s emotions slowly settled, and her voice turned bright again. “Thank you, Mommy. You’re the best.”

After the call ended, Emily sat where she was for a long time without moving. 

She couldn’t quite tell whether what she felt was helplessness or a kind of almost ironic sense of loss.

But Emily remembered it clearly. That night, Sophia had asked her to apologize to Andrew. 

After work, Emily stopped by the supermarket, bought some

When she returned to Joy Gardens, Sophia was sitting cross–legged on the living room carpet playing with her toys, with Rebecca beside her. 

Hearing the sound at the door, Sophia immediately looked up and spotted Emily walking in with shopping bags. 

She jumped to her feet, trotted over, and hugged Emily’s legs. “Mommy, you’re back.” 

Emily looked down at her daughter, something stirring lightly in her chest. With her hands full, she could only respond softly, “Mm. Mommy’s going to make you something to eat.” 

Even though Sophia had disappointed her more than once, the bond between mother and daughter was never something that reason alone could sever. 

Sophia quickly straightened up and reached for the bags in Emily’s hands. “Mommy, I’ll help you.” 

The bags were heavy. Emily instinctively refused. “No need. Go 4/6

Sophia didn’t let go. Instead, she said earnestly, “The teacher said we should help out at home. I want to do chores too. I don’t want you doing everything by yourself.” 

Those words made Emily frown slightly. 

There was a time when hearing something like that would have warmed her heart. She would have smiled, brushed Sophia’s hair behind her ear, and told her she was growing up. 

But now, she only felt dazed, as if she were watching something unreal. 

A few seconds later, Sophia still took one of the bags, while Rebecca casually took the rest. 

When Emily went into the kitchen to prepare dinner, Sophia didn’t leave. 

As Emily worked at the counter, washing ingredients and heating the soup pot, Sophia stood beside her, placing the washed vegetables into bowls or handing over whatever was needed. 

Emily thought that perhaps the school had recently been teaching children to be considerate toward their parents, and Sophia had taken those words to heart.

“Mommy,” she hesitated and then spoke, “I want to ask you for something.”
