Ethan lifted his hand and gently rubbed the top of her head, coaxing her softly. “You’re already amazing. Don’t blame yourself like this. If Andrew knew how hard you were being on yourself, he wouldn’t be able to bear it either.” 

Nancy’s eyes reddened as she lowered her gaze. “Mm.” 

Ethan supported Nancy as they started toward the hall. Emily stood to the side. She didn’t leave, nor did she say a word. She simply watched the two of them. 

Before they walked inside, Ethan still turned back and looked at Emily. There was a heavy, unmistakable anger in his eyes. 

He was angry. 

Emily didn’t avoid his gaze. She met it openly. 

They looked at each other without speaking, but in that silent exchange, Emily clearly understood what he was telling her. 

He was telling her that she had gone too far. 

Had she really gone too far? 

It was Nancy who had blocked her way and refused to let her leave. She had only pushed through. Why was Nancy not at 2/6 fault, yet she was?

Emily let out a bitter smile and looked away from Ethan. 

Just as she was about to leave, Ethan suddenly asked Nancy, “Can you still walk?” 

Nancy was still distracted and had not yet answered when Ethan bent down and scooped her up into his arms. 

Ethan’s hand pressed against Nancy’s injured hand. Curled against his chest, Nancy murmured softly, “Ethan, you’re hurting me.” 

“Then I’ll be gentler.” 

As Ethan spoke, he lowered his head. From where Emily stood, it looked as though he kissed Nancy on the forehead. 

“Heh.” 

Emily couldn’t help letting out a cold, humorless laugh. She turned around and walked away. 

As Ethan carried Nancy inside, Sophia hurried over. “Daddy, what happened to Nancy?” 

What Ethan replied, Emily didn’t hear. She was already too far 

away.

Emily looked up and realized it was Lydia. 

Tyrone was still sitting in the passenger seat, though after a few seconds, he got out as well, clearly reluctant. 

Since Emily and Ethan had married, Lydia and Tyrone had rarely come to Joy Gardens. Even when they did, it was almost always for Sophia. 

Over the course of a year, at most, they came two or three times. 

In the past, whenever they came, Emily would prepare in advance. She would clean the house meticulously, arrange dinner, cook personally, and spend hours making dishes they liked. 

No matter how troublesome it was, she never complained. Instead, she seemed to enjoy it, as though using this effort to maintain a fragile yet important connection. 

But tonight was different. When Lydia and Tyrone appeared at the door, there was not the slightest hint of a smile on Emily’s face. She merely nodded politely. She didn’t exchange pleasantries, nor did she busy herself as she once had.

them and prepared to leave. But Lydia suddenly grabbed her arm. “Emily, I have something I want to talk to you about.” 

Emily froze. Her eyes were red as she looked at Lydia. “So you’re here to ask me for help too?” 

The Wilson family was not entirely made up of bad people. At the very least, Matthew and Lydia were not. 

Matthew had always treated Emily well. Lydia was not close to her, but she had never deliberately targeted her either. 

Meeting Emily’s wounded gaze, Lydia felt her heart tighten. After hesitating for a few seconds, she said helplessly, “Andrew’s mother is still very young. I went to see Aaron as well, but he said that only if you agree will he perform the surgery, so…” 

Emily didn’t want to hear any more. She shook Lydia’s hand off. “There’s no point telling me this. Go talk to Andrew.” 

With that, she turned to leave without hesitation. Tyrone didn’t block her. Instead, he said angrily to Lydia, “I told you. Even if you came to her, she wouldn’t help. She’s just a parasite. Why lower yourself to beg her?” 

Emily heard Tyrone’s resentment and contempt clearly, but she didn’t care. She got into her car and drove away.
