Lydia reached out and smacked Tyrone on the arm. “She is Sophie’s mother, so show some respect. As for Nancy, she’s just Ethan’s girlfriend. Don’t say things like that again. If I hear it one more time, I won’t let you off.” 

Tyrone rolled his eyes at Lydia. “You defend her like this. Do you really think she’ll appreciate it?” 

Lydia let out a sigh. “But what Andrew did wasn’t right either. Aaron is upright and principled. How could he possibly have made such low–level mistakes?” 

“You’re not Aaron,” Tyrone shot back. “How do you know whether he did or didn’t?” 

Lydia was choked by his words and said nothing more. 

The next day, after getting off work at noon, Emily brought lunch with her and went to visit Aaron. 

As soon as she pushed open the hospital room door, she saw that Matthew was there as 

well. 

“Matthew?” 

She was surprised.

Although she understood why Matthew had come, Emily didn’t flare up or lose her temper. 

When Matthew heard Emily’s voice, he immediately stood up from the chair beside the bed. Leaning on his cane, he smiled warmly at her. “Emily, I wanted to talk to you. Could you come chat with me for a bit?” 

Emily’s expression was cool, but she still replied, “All right.” 

Matthew was an elder and also the person in the Wilson family 

who treated her best. 

Even knowing why he was here, she restrained her anger. 

Emily placed the food she had brought on the bedside table. She glanced at Aaron, whose color had already returned to normal, and said, “I brought some food. I don’t know if it suits your taste, but have a little for now. After I get off work, I’ll take you out to eat.” 

She didn’t hide her care for Aaron in front of Matthew. 

She was open and aboveboard, unwilling to let anyone speculate about her intentions. 

Aaron smiled at her. “There’s no need to go to all that trouble. I can go out to eat on my own.”

The remark clearly carried a double meaning. It was meant for Matthew to hear, but it was also a genuine concern for Aaron. 

After finishing her instructions, Emily left the hospital room with Matthew. 

At the end of the corridor, Matthew thought for a long time before finally speaking. “Emily, I know you’re upset, but Ruth is a good person. She’s had a hard life. Just consider it as doing a good deed. Help her.” 

Emily lowered her head. Her thoughts churned, emotions surging all at once. She felt inexplicably stifled and wronged as well. 

Her nose stung, and tears threatened to fall, but she forced them back. 

She bit down on her lip to keep herself from crying. 

Both she and Aaron were in medicine. They naturally understood that saving lives was their duty. 

She knew Aaron well. Even if none of these people had come to ask her, he’d still perform the surgery for Ruth.

Yet now that everyone had come to her, she wanted even less to comply with their requests. 

Why did they get to decide everything?

Even though Matthew, the kindest person in the Wilson family, stood in front of her, Emily didn’t yield in the slightest. “I understand what you mean, but Aaron was persecuted by them. Whether he forgives them, whether he does the surgery, that all depends on his own will. I won’t make decisions for him, and I won’t pressure him.” 

Hearing this, Matthew asked gently, “What if I act as a mediator and help both sides reach some kind of reconciliation?” 

Emily froze for a moment. She looked up at Matthew for a long time before saying, “I’m not the one whose life was ruined. I don’t have the right to say such things.”

Emily responded with a soft “Mm,” taking it as agreement. 

Matthew asked a few more questions about her life. He asked whether work was going smoothly, whether Sophie was well–behaved, and whether things between her and Ethan had improved. 

Emily answered all of them with simple affirmations. 

After some casual conversation, Matthew said he was heading 

back. 

Emily didn’t try to stop him. After seeing him to the hospital entrance and watching him get into the car, she returned inside. 

When she went back into the room, she found that Aaron hadn’t touched the food on the table. 

“What’s wrong? Doesn’t it suit your taste?” 

Aaron leaned against the bed rail and smiled at her. “I thought you probably hadn’t eaten yet, so I wanted to eat with you.”

After sitting down, Emily ate with Aaron.
