Nancy lowered her head shyly and said, “Ethan and I… It’s not settled yet.”
Ruth patted the back of her hand. “Ethan is steady. Just follow him with peace of mind. He will definitely give you a proper wedding.”
Nancy’s face flushed, and she lowered her head even further.
Ethan was standing off to the side, looking down as he replied to messages on his phone. He was not paying attention to what Nancy and Ruth were saying.
When he looked up again, however, he saw Emily, slightly flushed and damp with sweat, placing the gifts she had brought down one by one.
Only after setting everything down did she straighten up and look over.
Ethan cast her a questioning glance. Emily ignored it entirely. She looked instead at Ruth and greeted her calmly, “Mrs. Ruth Robinson.”
Emily was already exercising restraint. She didn’t lose her temper, nor did she cause a scene in front of a patient.

Ruth heard Emily’s voice but didn’t acknowledge her at all. Instead, she continued holding Nancy’s hand as she spoke. “Andrew says you play the piano beautifully. Why don’t you come by often and play for me?”
Nancy glanced at Emily and then at Ethan before replying to Ruth, “As long as you enjoy it, I’ll come whenever you call.”
Ruth’s smile widened. “You’re such a sweet girl. Unlike some people who study medicine and start thinking they’re untouchable. They forget how easily someone like that can be ruined, just because they annoyed the wrong people.”
Emily stood quietly in the middle of the living room. She knew Ruth’s words were deliberately aimed at her. She also knew that Ruth dared to speak to her this way entirely because of Ethan’s attitude.
If Ethan didn’t take her seriously, why would his relatives or friends?
That was why, even with Ethan present, Ruth still felt free to humiliate Emily without restraint.
Ethan didn’t speak up for her, which was exactly what Emily had expected. She gave a faint smile and then said to Ruth, “Mrs. Ruth Robinson, Matthew has mobility issues, so he asked me to come by on his behalf to check on you. With that, Emily turned around.
Still, she didn’t feel fully satisfied. She turned back again, smiling sweetly at Ruth. “Mrs. Ruth Robinson, you are no longer young. You should take good care of yourself. It would be best to stay healthy for the rest of your life and never have to go to the hospital again.”
Her words carried layers of subtle mockery.
They were also a veiled reminder to Ruth that she was alive only because Aaron had saved her.
After saying this, Emily turned decisively and walked out.
Ruth was furious. Her face went pale in an instant.
Seeing this, Ethan hurriedly poured her a glass of water and gently rubbed her back.
Nancy also supported Ruth and said, “There’s no need to be upset with someone like that. Your health is what matters
most.”
Outside, Andrew had just returned and ran straight into Emily as she was leaving.

“What are you doing here?” Andrew asked, his tone full of wariness.
Emily didn’t even look at him. She walked past him and headed straight outside.

No wonder Ethan didn’t like her. With a personality like hers, how could she compare to Nancy in any way?

Ethan looked at Ruth and smiled faintly, but he didn’t respond.
