Chapter 124 Home?Â
Emily stopped in her tracks and refused without a second thought. “No. I have a home of my own.”Â
She didn’t know that Nancy would be away from Joy Gardens for the next few days, so when she said this, there was an extra layer of meaning woven into her words.Â
Ethan heard it clearly. He simply chose not to argue.Â
Looking at Emily’s back, he said, “Joy Gardens is your home too.”Â
Emily let out a soft, ironic laugh. “Is it?”Â
Was Joy Gardens really her home?Â
Maybe it had been once. But it certainly was not anymore.Â
Ever since Nancy moved in, Emily had ceased to be the lady of Joy Gardens.Â
Ethan didn’t answer her bitter question. He only said, “Sophie needs you to take care of her.”Â
Emily refused instinctively. “I have work. I can’t revolve around Sophia every moment of the day.”Â

Ethan looked at her back and said, “I have work too. If you don’t take care of Sophie, then who will?”Â
That irritated Emily. She turned around and glared at him. “Then let-”Â
She meant to say that Nancy could do it, but before the words could leave her mouth, Ethan cut her off. “Nancy went to visit her family. She won’t be back for a while.”Â
At that, Emily fell silent.Â
Why had Ethan called her this morning to take Sophia to school? Why had he asked her to iron his clothes? Why had he told her to stay at Joy Gardens?Â
At that moment, every unanswered question finally had itsÂ
answer.Â
Because Nancy was gone, they needed her. So she was expected to come back.Â
Emily found it ridiculous, and more than that, bleak. She didn’t want to argue with Ethan, nor did she want to say anything else. She simply turned and went downstairs on her own.Â
That afternoon, at five o’clock, Emily was distracted throughout her shift.Â

Ethan’s words from that morning kept looping in her mind.Â
“If you don’t take care of Sophie, then who will?”Â
School would be letting out soon. If no one came to pick Sophia up, she would surely be hurt.Â
Thinking this, Emily found she still couldn’t bring herself to ignore it. She asked her department head for permission to leave early and then drove to the kindergarten.Â
By the time she arrived, most of the children had already been picked up. Only a few remained, waiting for their parents. Sophia was one of them.Â
When she saw Emily, tears immediately spilled down her face.Â
“Mommy, I thought you’d forgotten me. I thought nobody was coming to get me.”Â
Sophia clung to Emily’s leg, sobbing.Â
Such a small child, carrying her little backpack, crying until her face was soaked.Â
Sophia was the child Emily had carried for ten months, the child she had almost lost her life bringing into the world after an amniotic fluid embolism. How could she not love her?Â

Emily’s heart clenched painfully.Â
She picked Sophia up, soothed her, and carried her to the car.Â
Back at Joy Gardens, Emily still prepared dinner for Sophia.Â
By the time everything was done, it was already past eight. They had just sat down at the dining table when there was movement outside. Ethan was back.Â
Rebecca looked up first, startled for a moment, and then smiled. “You’re back.” She turned to fetch more tableware from the kitchen and brought out the final dish, her voice carrying an unusual lightness.Â
It had been a long time since Ethan and Emily had sat at the same table like this.Â
Tonight felt like a good sign to Rebecca.Â
Sophia looked up and, upon seeing Ethan, called out obediently, “Daddy.”Â
Ethan responded softly. His gaze paused briefly on the table before settling on Emily.Â
Rebecca and Sophia both greeted him. Only Emily didn’t. From beginning to end, she sat quietly, eating her dinner with her head lowered, her expression distant, as though he wereÂ

merely someone who happened to be present in the sameÂ
space.Â
A scene suddenly flashed through Ethan’s mind. Two years ago, when he had returned to Joy Gardens without warning. That night, Emily had been having dinner with Sophia.Â
When she saw him, she immediately stood up, added dishes to the table, and smiled as she told him about Sophia’s day.Â
But now, she couldn’t even be bothered to look up at him.Â
She had changed.Â
Ethan took a seat at the table. Sophia tilted her head and asked in a soft voice, “Daddy, you don’t have to work late today?”Â
“Nope.”Â
As she ate, Sophia said cheerfully, “That’s great. It’s been so long since we’ve had dinner together, the three of us.”Â
Ethan pulled a napkin and gently wiped the corner of her mouth. His tone softened. “Easy.”Â
Sophia nodded and then stole a glance at Emily.Â
Emily remained quiet, her emotions unreadable, as though she were deliberately distancing herself from the meal.Â

But Sophia remembered clearly. In the past, whenever Emily saw Ethan, there had always been warmth and a smile in herÂ
eyes.Â
Now, she didn’t even offer the most basic courtesy.Â
There was a time when Emily would be waiting at the door. She would take Ethan’s coat and briefcase, set his slippers by the entrance, and remind him to wash his hands because dinner was almost ready.Â
Sophia sensed the difference, even if she couldn’t fully understand it.Â
After a moment, she stopped thinking about it and lowered her head to continue eating.Â
Rebecca came out of the kitchen and set the utensils in front of Ethan. She spoke softly, “Dinner tonight was prepared personally by Mrs. Wilson.”Â
Ethan glanced down at the food. Of course he recognized it.Â
Even though they rarely truly lived together, whenever he came back here, he always ate well and slept soundly.Â
Emily knew his tastes and remembered his dislikes.Â

That had never changed. And so he had always known that he was, in fact, very used to, and very reliant on, the meals she made.Â
