Chapter 131 You Had a Fever Last Night

Taking a moment to collect herself in the car, Emily finally stepped out and made her way to the hospital.

By the time she reached the ward, Sophia had polished off her bowl of soup.

As Emily entered, Sophia gave her a cursory glance but remained silent.

Despite feeling better, Sophia was still peeved about earlier events and wasn’t in the mood to talk to her mom.

Emily knew her daughter well enough to sense the lingering

anger.

Oh well, there were more pressing matters at hand.

After an hour of monitoring in the ward with no new symptoms, Emily took Sophia back to Joy Gardens.

Once home, it was a flurry of activity. Emily helped Sophia get cleaned up and into fresh pajamas.

After tucking her in and waiting for her to drift off, Emily finally got a chance to take care of herself, showering and doing hé nightly skincare.

Maybe it was the rain earlier that got to her, because she started having a bunch of vivid dreams. Dreams of all the sacrifices she’d made for Ethan, the big fight with her family, and of Sophia calling her a bad mom.

In that half–asleep, half–awake state, it seemed like Ethan materialized beside her. He was bending over, his lips moving, but she couldn’t make out what he was saying.

Then, he slipped one hand under her back and the other under her legs, and lifted her up.

Emily had no clue where he took her; it was like a dream that was also kind of real.

That night, Emily slept like a log. When she woke up the next morning, her whole body ached, and she felt weaker than a

kitten.

As she came to her senses, she realized she wasn’t on the sofa in Sophia’s room anymore, but in the bedroom she used to

share with Ethan.

The real shocker? Ethan was lying right next to her, and she was wrapped around him like a koala.

Emily was totally stunned. As she remembered last night’s dream, she wondered if Ethan actually carried her.

So, Emily tried to gently untangle herself. She thought she was being as quiet as a mouse, but Ethan’s eyes popped open.

The second Emily saw his eyes open, she froze like a statue.

Turning his head, Ethan fixed his gaze on her for a moment and then asked, “Getting up?”

In a flash, Emily drew her arms and legs back and shuffled to the far side of the bed. “Yeah,” she murmured.

Noting her attempt to keep her distance, Ethan simply mentioned, “You had a fever last night.”

The memory of the rain came back to Emily, and she just uttered, “Oh.” She felt so feeble that getting up was the last thing on her mind; all she wanted was to stay as far away from Ethan as she could.

Seeing how poorly she was doing, Ethan instinctively reached out. But it was as if Emily had been electrocuted, and she

flinched.

Seeing her reaction, Ethan felt a sharp twinge in his chest.

Back in the day, Emily would have been all over him if he were this close.

She was too weak to resist and ended up in his arms. He then leaned in and pressed his forehead against hers.

A few seconds later, he pulled back and said, “You’re still a bit feverish. Skip work at the hospital today.”

Emily shuffled away again. She couldn’t stand the smell on Ethan, the smoky smell of cigarettes mixed with some strange perfume.

“I can take care of myself. Besides, I’m going to the hospital. If anything happens, there’ll be people to look after me.” Emily wasn’t keen on Ethan’s arrangement and shot down his suggestion.
