Derek had clearly raised his voice on purpose, making sure Vanessa could hear him, as a warning not to let things escalate too far. 

Emily was worried about Vanessa and instinctively tightened her grip on Vanessa’s hand. 

When Vanessa stopped, she looked at Emily and smiled, “I really am fine.” 

Emily relaxed a little and didn’t press further. 

But then Vanessa lifted her hand and pointed in a certain direction. “But Emily, look over there.” 

Emily followed the direction of her finger and saw Ethan, Sophia, Andrew, Nancy, and Shawn. 

The bar was noisy and chaotic, and Sophia was still so young. She really should not have been in a place like this. 

Emily glanced at the time again. It was already close to eleven. 

Thinking of how Sophia had complained of stomach pain just a couple of days earlier, Emily felt a surge of anger. She had clearly told Ethan that Sophia needed a regular, healthy youtine.

Angry and frustrated, Emily almost instinctively took several steps toward Ethan and the others.

Emily froze for a moment. “Vanessa, you…” 

Vanessa smiled calmly, “I went back to him and treated him well on purpose. I wanted to see how heartless he could be, and whether there was anything human left in him at all.” 

Emily didn’t know what to say. She hugged Vanessa and soothed her gently. “It’s all in the past now. It’s never too late to let go.” 

Some people let go in an instant. Others didn’t let go until they had been hurt enough. 

When they reached the apartment, Emily helped Vanessa pack. Things that needed to be thrown away were thrown away, and the things she wanted to keep were packed up.

Emily lowered her voice. “Okay.” 

As long as Nancy was there, what could possibly be wrong with Sophia? 

At that point, Emily was ready to hang up. 

But then Ethan’s voice came through the phone again. “By
