That afternoon, before Emily finished her shift, Aaron arrived. 

The moment he appeared, the nurses in the department practically fell over themselves. One by one, they rested their chins in their hands and stared at him with open 

infatuation. 

Aaron returned their looks with a polite smile and then went straight to find Emily. 

Emily had just finished up and stood when she saw him. “Hey.” 

Aaron naturally took the bag from her hand and said softly, “Want to grab dinner together?” 

Emily hesitated briefly and then nodded. “Sure. My 

treat.” 

Aaron didn’t say much. He only smiled quietly at her. 

Once they were seated at the restaurant, both of them lpwered their heads to look over the menus.

Emily was still scanning the page, undecided, when she heard footsteps approaching from behind. 

She instinctively looked up and saw Ethan and Nancy walking toward them. They were side by side, and Nancy was holding onto Ethan’s arm. 

This so–called coincidence tonight was no accident. Nancy knew full well that she herself had chosen this place on purpose. 

Her doctoral research topic still hadn’t been finalized. 

Even though Ethan had introduced her to several respected figures in the field, the directions they suggested were either too risky or basically unworkable. 

If the research direction itself was wrong, it meant starting over from scratch. 

The cost of that could very well be delayed graduation, or even never completing the degree at all. 

Compared to that, Aaron had become her last option.

So today, Nancy brought Ethan with her. 

As they approached the table, Nancy greeted Aaron with a bright smile. “Aaron.” 

Aaron glanced at her and replied coolly, “Yeah.” 

Seeing that he was looking at her, Nancy felt even more certain that her guess had been right. 

She lowered her posture obediently and said, “I have a few questions I’d like to ask you.” 

Ethan stood beside Nancy the entire time. He didn’t say a word, but his presence alone was enough to signal that he yas backing her.

Emily clenched the menu in her hand, her fingers tightening almost imperceptibly. 

Aaron had already refused this once before. She hadn’t expected Nancy to ask again. 

Aaron looked up at Nancy, his expression impassive. “If this is about your research topic, I can’t help you. Choosing one is basic. If you need someone else to do that for you, then medicine probably isn’t the right field for you. Honestly, you should consider walking away now.” 

What he said was true. That was exactly why it hurt. 

With Ethan standing right there, being spoken to like this made her feel utterly humiliated. Her face flushed red. 

Before Nancy could completely lose her composure, Ethan’s expression had already darkened. “Nancy is simply asking for some guidance. Whether you choose to answer is your right, but there’s no need to embarrass someone in public. Some things are worth thinking through before you say them, especially when there may be consequences.” 

Ethan’s words held a veiled threat.

Emily heard it clearly and knew he was protecting Nancy. 

Worried that Aaron might be affected, she stood up and said to him, “Let’s eat somewhere else.” 

Ethan watched her actions closely. His cold eyes narrowed as he assessed the two of them. 

At the same time, a new suspicion formed in his mind. 

Is Emily so eager to divorce not because of Alexander, but because of Aaron? 

Over the past few days, he had kept guessing at the reason for her divorce, yet he still couldn’t determine who it was truly about. 

As Aaron stood up, his cool gaze fell on Ethan. “If you’re here to lecture me on manners,” he said flatly, “then this conversation ends here.” 

With that, he grasped Emily’s arm and led her out of the 

restaurant. 

Nancy watched Aaron’s retreating figure, her eyes reddening.

Ethan turned to look at Nancy. He knew she must be feeling embarrassed. 

He reached out and gently touched her cheek, his tone soft and indulgent. “It’s all right. I’ll take care of the research topic for you.” 

Hearing that only made Nancy feel more aggrieved. “I’m sorry. I’m just too stupid.” 

Ethan pulled her into his arms and patted her back lightly. “How could that be? You’re very smart.” 

Nancy rested her face against his chest and slowly began 

to calm down.

After sitting down again, Emily and Aaron both picked up their menus.

After ordering something simple, Emily looked up at him, hesitation in her voice. “Nancy means a great deal to Ethan,” she said quietly. “He won’t take it lightly. You might want to-” 

Before she could finish, Aaron cut in. “I’m not interested in who they are,” he said calmly. “I only see two people with questionable character. And as for what I said, I stand by it. Medicine isn’t a field just anyone belongs in.” 

Emily knew his impatience with them had everything to do with her. And that was exactly why unease settled in 

her chest. 

Ethan wasn’t the type to lash out on the spot. The more controlled he appeared, the more certain it was that he had already taken note of it, and that nothing said tonight would be left unaddressed.
