Hearing Sophia describe her that way did sting Emily, but not enough to make her angry. 

Vanessa, however, couldn’t hold back. She called out directly, “Sophia.” 

Sophia froze for a brief moment when she heard her name. She turned her head and glanced at Emily and Vanessa, her gaze lingering on them for a few seconds before she quickly looked away, pretending nothing had happened. She didn’t respond, nor did she move closer. 

From the moment Sophia was born, Emily had taken it upon herself to make Vanessa her godmother. 

Vanessa could be hopelessly soft–hearted when it came to love, but she had never been careless when it came to Sophia. 

Back then, Sophia had been close to Emily and especially fond of Vanessa. 

Now, she would not even look at them directly.

Emily let out a soft sigh, exhaustion lacing her tone. “Do you think she’d even let me?” 

Vanessa thought of how Sophia hadn’t even wanted to look at them just moments ago and finally fell silent. After a while, she murmured, “That’s true.” 

Emily said she would not interfere, but her heart was far

She then turned to Emily and said, “Emily, I have a meeting upstairs to discuss a collaboration. I’ll be back shortly. You sit in the hall for a bit and have something to eat.” 

Emily nodded with a smile. “Go ahead.”

He looked up at Emily, blinked, and said softly, “You’re really pretty. Prettier than the woman in the red dress from earlier.” 

Emily paused and then felt her heart soften.

She reached out and ruffled his hair, saying quietly, “Thank you.” 

The boy, eyes still red, hesitated for a moment before opening his arms. “Can I get a hug?”

Emily hadn’t yet had time to answer when a noticeable commotion suddenly rose near the entrance. 

She looked up and saw Alexander being escorted in by a small crowd, a woman on his arm. 

She was the same woman who had been sitting in the passenger seat of his car the night before.

She held onto Alexander’s arm naturally as they entered the hall together.

Alexander noticed Emily the moment he walked in. When he saw a young boy sitting in her arms, his brow creased almost imperceptibly. 

The pause lasted only a fraction of a second before he concealed it. He looked away and turned to address the greetings around him, his responses polite and perfunctory. 

Someone holding a glass of wine glanced at the woman beside him, half curious and half teasing. “And this is?”
