Chapter 19 Visit MatthewÂ
Lucky DrawÂ
The next morning, Ethan woke up to find Sophia already downstairs, picking at her breakfast in the dining room.Â
He sat down across from her, not sparing her a glance.Â
Sophia kept her head bowed, well aware that Ethan was mad.Â
She’d deliberately ignored Emily’s call last night. Even though he hadn’t yelled or scolded her, his cold silence said everything–he was furious.Â
After hanging up, he hadn’t even wished her goodnight.Â
She knew he was really, truly angry.Â
“Daddy…” Sophia turned her head cautiously, her voice soft and tentative.Â
Ethan’s phone rang. He ignored her, answering the call without hesitation.Â
It was Matthew.Â

“Do I have to beg just to see my great–granddaughter and daughter–in–law? Are you trying to pretend I don’t exist?”Â
Matthew had a fiery temper, but his place in the family was unshakable. He’d built Wilson Group from the ground up. Without his hard work, the Wilsons would never have become one of LA’s most powerful families.Â
Ethan had grown up by Matthew’s side. Their bond ran deep.Â

If it weren’t for Matthew, even if Emily held a knife to his throat, he never would’ve agreed to marry her.Â
Only Matthew’s intervention left him with no choice butÂ
to say yes.Â
Hearing Matthew’s complaints, Ethan’s lips barely twitched. “I’ll come when I have time.”Â
Matthew scoffed. “Time? When do you ever make time? Don’t give me that runaround, Ethan. I want a specific date.Â
“If you don’t bring Sophie and Emily to see me, you can forget about seeing me ever again.”Â

Matthew ignored him completely. “Tonight.”Â
Ethan hesitated. “Tonight might be a bit…”Â

“Then let me rot alone in this manor,” Matthew snapped, cutting him off.Â
The line went dead.Â
Ethan stared at the dial tone, silent.Â
As he set down his phone, Sophia scooted her chair closer. “Daddy, was that Great–grandpa?”Â
Despite everything, they were still father and daughter. There was no point holding grudges overnight.Â
Ethan finally acknowledged her. “Yeah. He wants to see you.”Â
Sophia’s legs swung excitedly under the table. “Yay! I haven’t seen Great–grandpa in forever. I miss him so much!”Â
Matthew spoiled Sophia rotten. Whatever she wanted—Â
andy, toys, anything–he’d get it for her.Â

Seeing her excitement, Ethan decided to be upfront. “Your mom’s coming too.”Â
Sophia’s face fell into a pout. “Then I don’t want to go.”Â
Ethan didn’t want to force her, so he played his trump card. “If you don’t go, Great–grandpa will be heartbroken.”Â
That softened her. “Fine. I’ll go.”Â
Ethan smiled faintly and let it drop.Â
Halfway through breakfast, he called Emily.Â
He rarely contacted her directly. Her number wasn’t even saved under a name, just the last few digits.Â
She picked up on the first ring.Â
“What?” Her tone held a hint of impatience.Â
Ethan paused. “Grandpa wants us at Wilson Manor tonight. He says he misses you and Sophie.”Â
Emily was driving to work when she heard this.he froze3Â

When she spoke again, her voice was hoarse. “I’ll be there.”Â
If nothing else, she owed Matthew this. He was the only one in the Wilson family who’d ever been kind to her, and she’d never forget that.Â
Her quick agreement didn’t surprise Ethan. “I’ll pick you up this afternoon.”Â
Emily rejected him immediately. “No need. I’ll drive myself.”Â
Her response caught him off guard.Â
Once, she would have cried with joy if he’d offered to pick her up. Now, she was just… calm.Â
Ethan didn’t push. “Then can you pick up Sophie on your way?”Â
“It’s not really on my way. You should get her,” Emily said flatly.Â
She knew Ethan probably had no idea where she worked. 5/9Â

But the inconvenience was just an excuse. Emily didn’t want to get too involved with Sophia anymore.Â
The daughter she’d nearly died for now only had eyes for Nancy.Â
If Sophia didn’t care about her, why should she keep trying? Besides, Sophia probably didn’t want her picking her up anyway.Â
Ethan fell silent. But Emily had already hung up.Â
The driver was waiting outside, but Sophia hadn’t left yet. She was waiting for Ethan to finish the call.Â
Even though she was still mad at Emily, Sophia couldn’t help feeling hurt that Emily hadn’t tried to make up with her. And now she’d refused to pick her up.Â
It made her angrier than ever.Â
Whether she’d agreed or not was one thing, but Emily had said no without even hesitating.Â
Ethan put away his phone.Â

Sophia pouted. “Daddy, you spoiled Mommy too much.”Â
Spoiled?Â
He’d never spoiled Emily. But he didn’t bother explaining that to a kid.Â
“Go to school. I’ll pick you up this afternoon,” Ethan said, standing up to head upstairs.Â
Sophia sat at the table a little longer.Â
Finally, she jumped down from her chair and muttered under her breath, “Hmph. I don’t want a mean mommy like her anyway.”Â

At six that evening, just as Emily was about to leave work, the ER rushed in a child with a severely broken leg.Â
Seeing how bad the injury was, she stayed to help with the emergency treatment.Â
By the time she finished, it was past seven.Â

Even with her foot on the gas, she didn’t arrive until after eight.Â
The servants greeted her as she pulled up.Â
As she approached the main hall, Emily heard Matthew’s angry voice before she even stepped inside.Â
“Emily’s not here yet, and you don’t even think to call and check on her! What woman wants a man who doesn’t care? You’re as cold as a wooden post. Who would ever love someone like you?”Â
Ethan sat on the sofa, staring at his phone where business news played.Â
It was anyone’s guess if he was listening to Matthew’s scolding. He showed no reaction at all.Â
Sophia was playing cards at a small table. Hearing Matthew, she turned around, serious as could be. “Great–grandpa, Mommy’s late because she’s not punctual, not because Daddy doesn’t care about her!”Â
Standing in the doorway, Emily heard every word. She Barely reacted.Â
