The next morning, Emily woke up with tears streaming down her cheeks. 

She sat propped against the pillows, staring blankly at the soft morning light filtering through the curtains, her eyes hollow and distant. 

After a long while, a gentle knock broke the silence. Molly’s bright voice rang out from the hallway. “Aunt Emily! Are you awake? Can I come in?” 

The sound brought Emily back to the moment. She cleared her throat. “I’m awake, sweetie. Come on in.” 

The door creaked open, and Molly bounced in, wearing pink pajamas, clutching a small stuffed doll tightly to her chest.

She picked it up gently, turning it over. No brand name, nothing extravagant–just an ordinary doll with a bright, frozen grin. 

A quiet suspicion crept into her mind. This had to be 

from Alexander.
