Sophia pressed her lips together and didn’t answer. 

Molly kept talking when she saw Sophia staying quiet. “My mommy was the one who told me about it. She had to go to work, so she asked Aunt Emily to come help me finish the assignment.” 

Emily sat there listening to the two girls talk and her heart felt heavy. She knew exactly why Sophia didn’t know about the homework. Nancy and Ethan had dropped the ball. 

She looked at Sophia and felt sorry for her, but she had no idea what she was supposed to say. 

Molly pulled a few sheets of paper off her easel and held them out to Sophia. “Here, I’ll give you some paper so we can draw together. Aunt Emily can help both of us.” 

Sophia looked down at the paper in front of her, but she wouldn’t reach out to take it. 

A few seconds passed and then she pushed the papers back. “I don’t need them. Nancy is going to help me draw,” she said. 

As soon as Sophia finished speaking, she turned around and walked away.

Rebecca had just sat down, but now she had to get up and chase after Sophia again. 

She took a few steps and then turned back to look at Emily. “Ma’am, maybe you should go comfort her. You’re Sophie’s 

mother after all.” 

Emily didn’t look at Rebecca. She took the paper Molly had just pulled out and put it back on the easel properly. 

But at the same time, she answered Rebecca, “Rebecca, you go comfort her. I need to stay here and help Molly paint. I can’t leave right now.” 

Rebecca let out a helpless sigh and shook her head. “Alright then.” 

When she caught up to Sophia, Rebecca took her hand and tried to comfort her. “Ms. Sophia Wilson, your mother does care about you. You’re her child after all.”

Sophia cried even harder, “What about Nancy? Why didn’t she tell me?” 

Ethan explained again, “Nancy’s been doing her research. She probably forgot to check the messages too.” 

Sophia’s face was covered in tears and she said miserably, “But it’s due tomorrow.”

Back at the park, after Sophia left, Emily started teaching Molly how to paint maple leaves and grass. 

But while they were painting, someone called out from behind her. “Ms. Carter?” 

Emily turned around and saw Tommy. 

Kyrian was standing next to him. Today, he wasn’t wearing his suit. He had changed into casual clothes and sneakers instead. 

He was over 30 but he didn’t look his age at all. In fact, the more one looked at him, the better looking he seemed. 

It was cloudy that day and the light kept shifting from dark to bright. 

Kyrian stood on the lawn in his light–colored outfit. Big white clouds floated above his head. 

He stood there under those clouds looking impossibly handsome. 

Emily looked away and smiled when she turned to Tommy. “Hello, Tommy!”

Emily had been feeling pretty down, but when she heard Tommy compliment her, her smile grew wider. “Thank you, Tommy.” 

Molly heard Tommy’s voice too. She turned around and asked, “Are you here to paint too?” 

Tommy let go of Emily and nodded. “Yeah.” 

Molly looked up at Kyrian and greeted him politely. “Hello, Mr. Walls.” 

Kyrian had a serious expression and rarely smiled. He nodded. “Hello.” 

Emily nodded at Kyrian too as a greeting. 5/7

Tommy hesitated a little, but not because he was afraid of Molly. He just wanted to pass along a message to Alexander.

Kyrian only got through those really hard years because Alexander was there for him. 

Molly pulled on Tommy’s arm. “Sit down already. Why are you being so stiff? I’m not going to bite.” 

Tommy glanced back at Kyrian, then said to Molly, “Okay, okay, I’m sitting. Stop pulling on me. You’re going to break my arm off.” 

Molly rolled her eyes at him. “You’re such a baby.” 

Emily noticed Kyrian was still standing and smiled at him. “Mr. Walls, you can sit on the grass too if you don’t mind.” 

Kyrian nodded but declined. “No thanks. I need to make a phone call.” 

He understood what Tommy’s look had meant. Even if 

Tommy hadn’t given him that signal, he would have messaged Alexander anyway.

Emily stopped paying attention to Kyrian and went back to watching Molly paint. 

Kyrian pulled out his phone and snapped a picture for

He had barely sent the message when Alexander called him. 

Kyrian walked a bit farther away before picking up. “What’s up?” 

Alexander got straight to the point. “You’re with her?”
