Right when Sophia finished her tantrum in the living room, Ethan emerged from Matthew’s bedroom.

Scanning the cards scattered on the floor, he frowned in confusion–Emily was nowhere to be found.

Turning to Sophia, he asked, “Where’s your mom?”

Sophia shot an angry glare towards upstairs. “She’s up

there.”

Upon hearing this, Ethan fell into a brief reverie.

The woman who once cherished her daughter deeply now seemed to have turned a cold shoulder to her.

After a brief spell of silence, Ethan gently clasped Sophia’s hand. “Come along. I’ll go upstairs with you to wash up.”

Sophia planted her feet firmly on the ground, refusing to budge. “Daddy, I don’t want to sleep with Mommy.”

However, since Ethan wasn’t siding with her, throwing a tantrum would be in vain. Reluctantly, she gave in.

Upon reaching the bedroom. Ethan noticed that Emily had neither laid out pajamas nor toiletries for them.

The bathroom light was illuminated, and Emily was inside, freshening up.

Ethan was utterly bewildered as to what had come over Emily. He removed his watch and suit jacket, then settled himself on the sofa.

Sophia was equally irked that Emily wasn’t doting on her as usual.

But she managed to hold back her anger.

Before long. Emily stepped out of the bathroom, wrapped in a bathrobe.

Without uttering a single word or even sparing them a glance, she made her way to dry her hair.

Once done, she headed towards the sofa.

Ethan was holding his phone, clearly engaged in a video call. And Sophia was nestled snugly against him, beaming at the phone screen.

“Nancy, are you heading to bed?” Sophia asked.

Nancy’s voice drifted from the phone. “Yeah, I was about to hit the hay, but I’d be happy to stay up a little longer if it means chatting with you.”

Though she caught a glimpse of Emily approaching from the corner of her eye, Sophia remained still, huddled in Ethan’s embrace.

In days gone by, Emily would have felt a twinge of pain and asked if they were ready to retire for the night.

But at present, she couldn’t care less about their video

call. “I’ll make do with the sofa. You two can take the bed and carry on with your conversation.”

Emily repeated with resolve. “I’ll sleep on the sofa. You two take the bed.”

Sophia was boiling with rage. Just as she was about to lose her temper, Ethan asked, “Aren’t you going to help Sophie take a bath?”

Emily casually ran her fingers through her dry, smooth hair and replied, “Let the maid do it.”

Before, she’d always gone out of her way to take care of Sophia, but never got so much as a “thank you“.

Now, she simply had no desire to keep serving them.

This answer made Ethan’s temper flare up. He retorted, “You always took care of it before.”

Emily firmly held her ground. “When I was away from Joy Gardens, Rebecca was the one giving her baths—and she was fine, right?”

Although she knew very well that it was probably Nancy who’d been taking care of Sophia’s baths, she decided not to expose that fact.

to her feet, she forcefully pushed Emily and shouted, “I don’t need you to bathe me. I can do it myself. You’ll never get the chance to bathe me again for the rest of your life!”

After Sophia’s outburst, she made a beeline for the bathroom.

Meanwhile, on the phone, Nancy caught wind of Sophia’s words and quickly spoke up to soothe her, “Sophie, don’t take a bath tonight. I’ll do it for you when you’re back home tomorrow.”

Sophia just grunted in response, “Okay.”

Nancy was great, but Emily used to be more thorough when giving her a bath.

Yet it felt like Emily didn’t love her anymore these days.

Since Ethan, being a guy, wasn’t in a position to bathe Sophia, and Sophia didn’t bother calling a maid, she climbed right into bed. Pulling the covers over herself, she shut her eyes.
