Chapter 212 Matthew’s Wish

Despite Emily’s hopes, Ethan wasn’t on board. I’ve got a meeting lined up. And I’ve already laid out my wishes plain and clear,he insisted.

Emily’s heart sank as she knew exactly what he was hinting at —the idea of one last intimate encounter before the divorce.

But a wave of indignation washed over her.

In the past, she’d been indifferent and even compliant.

Now, though, just the thought of him made her skin crawl.

If Ethan was that set on it, well, Emily wasn’t one to back down.

If you’re so desperate to prove something, it doesn’t matter who you do it with, she retorted before slamming down the phone.

Fine. If he was too swamped to get the marriage certificate sorted, she’d head to the Wilson Manor and have an honest

chat with Matthew.

Emily went about her workday like any other. Once the afternoon hustle and bustle died down, she dialed Matthew’s number.

The phone barely rang twice before Matthew’s jovial voice boomed through the receiver, Hey there, Emily!”

Matthew, are you gonna be home tonight?Emily asked, her voice soft and hesitant.

Sure thing,Matthew replied.

After a moment’s pause, Emily gathered her courage. Matthew, I think I need to come by the Wilson Manor. There are some things I’ve gotta tell you facetoface.”

Matthew felt a knot form in his stomach, but he forced a calm tone. Alright, then. I’ll be waiting for you at home.”

As soon as work ended, Emily hopped in her car and made a

beeline for the Wilson Manor.

The moment she stepped through the gates, chaos greeted her. Servants were scurrying around, their voices filled with panic. Sir Wilson’s fallen! Quick, call everyone!”

The oncepeaceful manor was now in disarray.

Filled with worry, Emily sprinted towards the commotion.

There, on the cobblestone path, lay Matthew. His head was bleeding from the back, and he was unconscious.

At the hospital, the emergency room team sprang into action to save Matthew.

Meanwhile, Emily phoned Ethan to break the news.

Ethan didn’t waste a second. He raced to the hospital as fast as his car could go.

Just as he skidded to a stop, the emergency room door swung open. A doctor wearing glasses stepped out and approached Emily and Ethan. Sir Wilson’s awake and wants to talk to you two,the doctor informed them.

A sense of dread washed over Emily. She had a pretty good idea what Matthew was going to say, but there was no avoiding it.

Saving a life came first.

Inside the room, Matthew was surrounded by a maze of medical equipment.

The air was thick with the smell of antiseptic and sickness, and the constant beeping of machines filled the silence.

As a doctor herself, Emily understood the gravity of the situation all too well.

She and Ethan walked over to the bedside. Matthew’s face was as pale as a ghost, his eyes halflidded, and he looked like he was hanging on by a thread.

Matthew’s voice was weak, but he managed to call out, Emily”

Emily reached out and took his hand. Tears welled up in her eyes as she said, I’m here.”

It was Matthew who had brought her and Ethan together.

She owed him a debt of gratitude. Thanks to his efforts, she’d married the man of her dreams, even if things hadn’t worked

out.

And throughout their fiveyear marriage, Matthew had treated her like family.

His kindness was something she’d always cherish.

Matthew’s fingers, bony and gnarled with age, gently grazed Emily’s hand. With a weak but insistent voice, he called out, Ethan.”

Hearing his name, Ethan stepped closer. He reached out and placed his large hand over Matthew’s.

Matthew gently placed his wrinkled hands on top of Emily and 417 Ethan’s clasped ones. His voice, thick with age and frailty,

broke the silence. I’m an old man. My days are numbered. I won’t ask for much. Just want you two to be happy and give me a greatgrandkid. Then I can go in peace.”

Emily had long expected him to say this. She kept her eyes down, trying to hide the complex emotions swirling inside.

But Ethan wasn’t quick to give in. With a nonchalant expression, he retorted, Grandpa, Tyrone and Lydia are at that age now. If you’re longing for a greatgrandbaby, live long enough to see theirs.”

Matthew’s body jolted. A series of forceful coughs shook his frail frame, and the heart monitor beside the bed started blaring its alarm.

Quick as a flash, Emily scooted closer to the bedside and began rubbing Matthew’s chest in slow, soothing motions. Matthew, take it easy. Just breathe deep, she murmured, her voice soft and reassuring.

Gradually, Matthew’s breathing settled down, and the strident alarm of the monitor quieted.

Ethan, realizing his words had gone too far, clamped his mouth shut. Concern etched all over his face, he stared intently at Matthew.

Matthew, still gasping for air, fixed his tired but stern eyes on Ethan. I only want one from you and Emily. Those two are

still young. I doubt I’ll last that long,he rasped.

Ethan fell silent. For what seemed like an eternity, he stared at the floor, lost in thought. Finally, he nodded slightly. Alright, I’ll do my best.”

At his words, Emily’s eyes widened in disbelief. She shot Ethan a daggerlike look, but in the face of Matthew’s critical state, she managed to keep her temper in check.

Not long after, a doctor stepped in and waved them out. You two need to wait outside,he said firmly.

Outside the emergency room, Ethan reached out and gently took Emily’s arm. Come over here with me for a sec,he said.

Even though she was completely in the dark about what he wanted, Emily followed him obediently.

They found themselves outside the bustling emergency department. Ethan came to a stop by the wroughtiron railing. Reaching into his coat pocket, he pulled out a pack of cigarettes, tapped one out, and lit it.

The cherryred tip of the cigarette glowed brightly in the pitchblack night.

Emily stood there wordlessly, her eyes fixed on him. The smoke played tricks, obscuring his face, leaving her struggling to make out his expression.
