Dawn cast a pale, silvery glow over the world as Ethan finally dragged himself back home. 

Nancy had spent the entire night awaiting his return. The moment she heard his footsteps, she sprang up from the sofa. 

Ethan stepped through the door, and there was Nancy, hurrying straight over. “Ethan, I’m so glad you’re back!” 

He took in her haggard face and furrowed his brows. “Why didn’t you get some sleep?” 

Shaking her head, Nancy said, “I couldn’t rest until you were safe and sound.” 

Ethan reached out and gently tweaked her cheek. His voice was rough, sore from exhaustion. “You’re such a silly thing, you know that?” 

Nancy’s eyes were shiny with unshed tears; she just shook her head mutely. 

Ethan cracked a weary smile. “Go hit the hay now. No point standing here looking all lost.” 

But concern still clung to Nancy. She summoned up the qourage to ask, “How’s Matthew doing?”

Ethan’s eyes were bloodshot; it was clear he’d been through a long and difficult night. With a heavy sigh, he said, “Not great. I’ll likely be staying at the Wilson Manor for a spell.” 

Nancy’s shoulders slumped, and she stared at the floor. “All right, then.” 

Noticing her disappointment, Ethan quickly added, “Once he starts getting better, I won’t forget my promise to you.” 

Tears welled up and spilled down Nancy’s cheeks. “It’s okay for me. I’m just worried Mom might get the wrong idea.” 

Ethan glanced at the clock; it was nearly seven. Gloria would be stirring soon. 

After a brief pause for thought, he declared, “Don’t you fret. I’ll have a word with her.” 

And with that, he made his way towards Gloria’s room. Nancy tried to stop him, but he was already rapping on the door. 

“Come in.” Gloria’s voice rang out from within. 

Ethan pushed the door open and flashed a smile. “Good morning, Gloria.” 

Nancy was left in the dark about what was said inside. All she 

could do was listen to Gloria’s hearty laughter that drifted out 2/6 every now and then.

Emily grasped his meaning. If she didn’t meet him willingly, he’d track her down at the hospital department. And that would change the whole dynamic.

with the divorce at the courthouse.” 

Emily retorted, “I’ll play along for Matthew, and I can act lovey–dovey. But we should start the divorce process right away. By the time it’s over, Matthew should be back on his feet.” 

Ethan fell silent, his eyes fixed on Emily with a complex look. 

After a few seconds, Emily added, “Even after the divorce, I’ll still take good care of him.” 

Ethan then brought up another topic. “What about having a second child?” 

“There’s no way I’m having another kid.” Emily was adamant. 

Ethan frowned. “Faking a pregnancy won’t hold up in the long 

run.”

It seemed perfectly feasible for Ethan to have another child with her.

In the past, she’d always deferred to him. 

Tired of the argument, Ethan said, “This arguing is getting us nowhere. Let’s not discuss the divorce while Grandpa’s in the hospital. We’ll talk about it after he’s home.” 

Emily had heard enough. Standing up, she declared, “I’ll hold off on the divorce talk, but we need to start the next step of the 

process.” 

What was more, that month–long cooling–off period was yet another hurdle she was eager to get past.
