The Carter family ran a finance company. Their business relied heavily on partnerships with major corporations, which brought in substantial revenues and kept the company afloat.

Recognizing Emily’s voice, Chloe relaxed. 

Emily wrapped her arms around the trembling woman. “You’re such a silly girl,” she whispered. 

Chloe sniffled. “I see Ryan working his butt off, not getting any sleep. I just wanted to do something for him.” 

Tears streamed down Emily’s face. Her voice thick with emotion, she said, “We’re so blessed to have you in the Carter family.” 

Chloe still looked downcast. “I couldn’t do a thing. I almost…” 

Emily gently stroked Chloe’s back. “As long as you’re safe, that’s all that matters. Whether we’re rich or poor, as long as we stick together, we’ll get through this.” 

Chloe was somewhat comforted, but thinking of Ryan, she grew worried again. “Promise me you won’t tell Ryan what happened. If he finds out, he’ll go ballistic.”

The evening of the next day found Emily and Ethan exiting the hospital after visiting Matthew. 

Stepping out onto the busy street, Emily finally worked up the nerve. “I gotta talk to you,” she said directly. 

“About what?” Ethan asked nonchalantly. 

Not one to mince words, Emily blurted, “Can your company run its money through Ryan’s financial platform?” 

Amid the stream of passersby and the symphony of city noises, the dim streetlights cast an orange veil over their faces.

Logically, Ethan should use the deal to please Hugh for Nancy’s sake. 

Ethan caught her drift and flashed a smile. “I get what you’re saying. I checked out Nancy’s brother’s firm. It’s brand new. I wouldn’t have gone with them even if you hadn’t asked. And Nancy, she trusts me. She knows what I’m about and always has my back. She won’t mind,” he said confidently. 

After a brief pause, he added, “Once his business gets more established, I’ll team up with him on other projects.” 

Hearing Ethan’s words, Emily fell silent. She didn’t know what to come back with. 

In the end, she just mumbled, “Okay.” 

Then she hopped into her car and drove off.
