Chapter 23 LateÂ
Lucky DrawÂ
Sophia slumped her shoulders in defeat and muttered, “Fine, then.”Â
Ethan reassured her, “I’ll ring your mom. I’ll tell her to come back and take you to kindergarten right away. If you don’t feel like chatting with her, that’s cool. But she’s your mom, after all. It’s her job to look out for you, and taking you to school is part of that deal.”Â
“Okay, Daddy,” Sophia just mumbled.Â
Once Ethan hung up, he wasted no time dialing Emily’sÂ
number.Â
But the line just rang and rang with no answer.Â
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Emily was swamped with patients. Her phone was on silent, and she was up to her neck in work.Â
Since Emily didn’t pick up, Ethan figured she might’ve left her phone at home when she went out with Matthew. So, he decided not to keep calling.Â

Still, he shot her a text: [Take Sophie to school. I’m at the office now.]Â
The maid dressed Sophia up, tied her hair into two cute pigtails, and fixed her breakfast.Â
As the minutes ticked by from 8:00 to 8:20, and there was still no sign of Emily, the maid started to panic.Â
She rushed outside to look for Emily.Â
Just then, Matthew hobbled into the hall on his cane. Seeing the maid in such a frenzy, he frowned and demanded, “What’s the big rush?”Â
The maid scanned behind Matthew, but Emily was nowhere in sight. She looked confused and blurted out, “Sir Wilson, where’s Mrs. Wilson? Ms. Sophia Wilson is waiting for her. We’re gonna be late, and she’s always soÂ
careless about time!”Â
Matthew didn’t have time to scold the maid for her rudeness. He furrowed his brow and said, “Emily left ages ago. Isn’t Ethan here? Why isn’t he taking Sophie to school?”Â

“Emily’s been gone for an hour! What’s Ethan thinking, leaving his daughter’s school run to someone else?”Â
As Sophia heard their conversation, her lower lip started to quiver.Â
Then, she let out a wail, “Bad Mommy! Bad Mommy!”Â
As Matthew heard Sophia’s cries, his heart tightened into a knot. He didn’t have a moment to spare to set right Sophia’s accusations against Emily.Â
Rushing into the hall, he scooped Sophia up in his arms. Patting her back soothingly, he cooed, “There, there, Sophie. Great–grandpa’ll take you to school. Quit crying, sweetie. Everything’s gonna be okay.”Â
Sophia just wouldn’t stop bawling. It took Matthew a good few minutes of gentle words and pats before her sobs finally quieted down, though she still hiccupped with leftover cries.Â
Eventually, Matthew got the driver to take Sophia to kindergarten.Â

the school gate. Her usual teacher, who’d always greet her with a cheery “Good morning,” was nowhere to be seen.Â
The security guard got up, opened the gate, and asked with a kind smile, “Hey, little Sophie. How come you’re late today?”Â
That question was like a trigger. Tears welled up in Sophia’s eyes again, and she started wailing even louder.Â
Normally, Nancy took her to school on the dot. The teacher would always shower her with praise and stick a shiny gold star on her forehead.Â
But today, no star for her.Â
Sophia thought the teacher had been giving her cold looks all day because she was late. Even when she practically waved her arm off trying to get the teacher’s attention to answer a question, the teacher just passed her by.Â
So, Sophia was in a rotten mood the whole day.Â
She mumbled curses about Emily nonstop, and her diske for Emily turned into complete hatred.Â

The outpatient hours ended right on schedule. Before six, Emily was out of the hospital.Â
It was in the car that she finally checked her phone. There was a message from Ethan asking her to take the kid to school in the morning and one from Henry, too.Â
[Emily, your mom and I have gone all out and prepared tons of stuff. Bring the little one home today. We just want to see our granddaughter.]Â
With her dad insisting so much, Emily caved in.Â
She gritted her teeth, made a U–turn, and drove straightÂ
to Ethan’s company.Â
She knew that getting Sophia to go home to see herÂ
parents would be a piece of cake if Ethan had a word with Sophia.Â
It was just this once.Â
