Alexander regarded her with a calm expression and remarked, “You said you didn’t want it.” 

Emily glared at him. “Even if I said that, it was bought with money. How could you just toss it away like it’s nothing?” 

Seeing her getting worked up, Alexander broke into a smile and inquired, “So, do you want it or not?” 

Emily was on the verge of saying no automatically. But then, Alexander lifted his hand, and as he unfurled his palm, the necklace dangled from it. 

“One more chance. Do you want it?” Alexander fixed 

his intense gaze on Emily, his question brimming with 

seriousness. 

It was clear that if she refused this time, he’d make good on his threat to discard it. 

Alexander had an uncanny ability to read Emily’s mind. 

Helpless against his tactics, she relented. “Fine, give it to me. I’ll hold onto it for you.” 

Once she’d safely stowed the necklace away, they continued their leisurely stroll.

The crowds had started to thin out by this time. 

As they meandered along the street, an elderly man seated at a small table hailed Emily, “Miss, could you spare a moment?” 

Emily turned to look. The old man was clad in a long robe and sported a grizzled beard. There was an air of mystery about him, as if he were a sage from a bygone era. 

Emily pointed at herself, a look of confusion on her face. “You’re talking to me?” 

The old man stroked his beard and invited, “Take a seat. Let me do a little fortune–telling for you.”

Just as Emily was about to refuse again, Alexander nudged her gently. “Sit down. Let’s see what this old guy has to say.” 

The old man chimed in, “Yeah, just listen. It’s like having a chat with an old friend.” 

Their combined persuasion wore Emily down, and she took a seat across from the old man.

The old fortune-teller shuffled the Tarot cards anew. Once he’d finished his divination, he rubbed his bearded chin and

Alexander, who had been keeping an eye on her, whipped around when he saw her leaving and jogged up to her. 

“What’s got you all glum?” he asked, noting the frown on Emily’s face. 

Emily halted, pivoted, and fixed her eyes on Alexander for what felt like an eternity. As she studied his features, it was like trying to recall a half–forgotten dream; she couldn’t unearth any evidence of a strong bond or a promise.
